Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

중풍(中風) 환자(患者) 중(中) 언어장애(言語障碍)에 대한 임상적(臨床的) 고찰(考察)

This clinical study on 93 cases of Dyslogia after stroke confirmed through brain CT, MRI scan and clinical observation. They were hospitalized in the oriental medical hospital of Dong-Eui University from january to September 2003. The following results were found: I. The ratio between males and females was 1.6:1. Of Dyslogia p who had suffered stroke, most were in their sixties. 2. Categorized by attack site, right hemiplegia patients comprised 15 cases(l6.1%), and left hemiplegia patients, 71 cases(54.8%), so the ratio between Rt. and Lt. was 1:4.7. 3. Categorized by preceeding disease, hypertension was seen 51 cases(54.8%), and diabetes mellitus was seen 21 cases(22.6%). 4. Categorized by repeat attack, it was the first attack for 71 cases(76.3%), and the second attack for 13 cases(l4.0%), and for 9 cases(9.7%) it was the third or nth attack. 5. According to the classification of Zhang Zhongjing, apoplexy involving Bu-organs comprised 42 cases(45.2%), apoplexy involving meridians 39 cases(41.9%), apoplexy involving Jang-organs 11 cases(11.8%), and for apoplexy involving collaaterals there was one case(1.1%). 6. According to the classification of Cheng Zhongling, 43 cases(46.7%) were classed heart meridian, 25 cases(27.2%) were classed Spleen meridian, and 24 cases(26. 1%) were classed Kidney meridian. 7. According to the classification of Sun Simiao, 49 cases(52.7%) were classed Pyungo, two cases(2.2%) were classed Pungeui, ,seven cases(7.5%) were classed Pungbi( I ), and two cases(2.2%) were classed Pungbi( II ).

Background : Actin disassembly is one of the main pathogenic phenomena in diabetic nephropathy. Small GTPases, related with actin cytoskeleton, may have a pathogenic role in high glucose (HG) induced renal injury. Methods : HG-stimulated gene profiling in cultured human glomerular endothelial cells (GEC) was examined by using oligonucleotide microarray technique. Human GEC were isolated from normal part of nephrectomy specimen and cultured under normal glucose (5.6 mM) or HG (30 mM) for 24 h, 48 h and 72 h. Total RNA was purified from the cell and then applied on 10 K-DNA chip (Macrogen) after amplified with T7 RNA polymerase. Results : About 2,400 genes showed 2-fold difference by HG. Approximately, 300 out of 2,400 genes were down-regulated and about 460 genes were up-regulated continuously by HG. Rho GTPase-related molecules and actin cytoskeleton regulatory gene expressions were highly regulated. Rho7, Rho guanine nucleotide exchange factor 1 and 3, and Rho GDP dissociation inhibitor were significantly up-regulated by HG without alteration of Rho GTPase activation protein 5, suggesting increased activity of Rho GTPase. In addition, myosin light chain 2 and 3, and p21-activated kinase, possibly related with actin-myosin interaction, were also significantly up-regulated by HG. Western blot revealed HG induced increase of CDC42 protein expression, not RhoA and Rac1 in total cell lysates of GEC. Conclusion : Enhanced gene profile encoding Rho GTPase and actin cytoskeleton is one of prominent components of the GEC transcriptomic response under HG.

Fingerprint patterns of 333 schizophreniacs who met with the diagnostic criterias of International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia except items associated with chronicity in exclusion criteria were studied, and the following results were obtained. 1. The frequency distribution of the fingerprint patterns in the 333 schizophreniacs was ulnar loop, whorl, twinned loop, arch, radial loop in order in both control and schizophrenia groups. 2. Finger ridge counts of both sexes were decreased significantly in schizophrenia group. 3. Dissociation of fingerprint pattern in the schizophrenia group was 51.1%, which was far greater than 6.25% of control group. Number of dissociation was greatest in the thumb, followed by index, middle, ring, and little finger in order. According to the above results, it is considered that both the number of finger ridges and degree of dissociation of fingerprint patterns were closely related with schizophrenia. Analysis of fingerprints and palmprints with the aid of chromosomal analysis would contribute the early diagnosis and prevention of schizophrenia.
관해된 정신분열병과 양극성장애 환자의 언어성 기억 및 학습 기능 비교

연구목적 : 본 연구는 관해 상태에 있는 정신분열병과 양극성장애 환자의 언어성 기억 및 학습 기능을 평가하고 이를 정상대조군과 비교하여 기억 요소의 질환별 특성을 분석하고자 실시하였다. 방 법 : 관해상태의 정신분열병 환자 30명과 양극성장애 환자 28명 및 정상대조군 72명을 대상으로 성, 연령, 교육연한, 발병연령, 잔여증상, 추체외로증상, 단순주의력 수준을 통제한 후 한글언어청각학습검사를 실시하여, 초과용량 즉각기억, 기억의 등록, 유지, 인출, 재인, 학습전략, 간섭효과를 분석하였다. 결 과 : 한글언어청각학습검사 결과를 세 집단간 비교한 결과, 정신분열병은 전행성 간섭효과를 제외한 모든 항목에서 대조군보다 유의하게 저하된 기억 수행을 보였으며, 양극성장애에 비해서도 대부분의 회상 시도에서 유의한 저하를 보였다. 특징적으로 학습 전략 활용 능력이 저조하였다. 양극성장애는 대조군에비해 즉각기억, 재인,학습전략에서 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았으나, 반복에 따른 회상과 학습은 대조군에 비해 유의하게 저하되었다. 정신분열병에 비해서는 전반적으로 비슷하거나 우월했지만, 간접자극 제시에 의한 회상 저하는 세 집단 중 가장 크게 나타났다. 환자군에서 검사성적에 대한 임상적 특성의 설명력을 분석한 결과, 정신분열병에서는 BPRS의 무력증 소척도, 유병기간, 입원횟수 등이 유의한 설명력을 갖는 것으로 나타났고, 양극성장애에서는 우울삽화 횟수가 유의한 설명력을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 결 론 : 관해상태의 양극성장애와 정신분열병 모두에서 대조군과 구별되는 언어성 기억 및 학습 기능 저하가 관찰되었다. 이러한 기억 및 학습 기능의 결함은 이들 두 장애의 고유한 질병 특성 표지자일 가능성이 높으며, 향후 이들 질환의 병태생리를 이해하고 치료적 접근 방법을 모색하는 데에 단초가 될 수 있을 것이다. Objectives : This study was to investigate the verbal memory and learning ability in remitted schizophrenic patients and euthymic bipolar patients in order to explore trait-dependent cognitive deficits of each disorder. Methods : Verbal memory was assessed with KAVLT(the Korean version of Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test) in outpatients with remitted schizophrenia(N=30), euthmic bipolar disorder(N=28), and normal control(N=72), KAVLT is made for assessment of immediate supraspan memory, registration, retention, retrieval, recognition, learning strategy, and interference effect. Several confounding factors including age, sex, educational level, attention span, residual psychopathology, and extrapyramidal symptoms were controlled among 3 groups. Patient groups were matched according to the age of onset, duration of illness, and frequency of hospitalization. Results : 1) The performance of bipolar group generally fall between the performance of schizophrenia and normal controls, while being most impaired in retroactive interference. Schizophrenic group showed significant impairment on most variables of KAVLT in comparison with the groups of bipolar disorder and normal control. 2) Within group analysis revealed that residual negative symptoms, duration of illness, and number of admission were highly correlated with the impairment of verbal memory and learning in schizophrenics. Number of depressive episodes and age were negatively correlated with verbal memory and learning among bipolar disorder patients. Conclusions : Both remitted schizophrenia and euthymic bipolar patients showed distinctive impairment in verbal memory and learning compared with controls. These results suggest that apecific impairment of verbal memory and learning in remitted state can be trait-dependent marker in both diseases. These deficits can give clues to the understanding of the pathophysiology and searching for more appropriate therapeutic interventions of mental disorders to improve cognitive deficits in remitted patients.
Shrinkage Estimation of Parameters in a Linear Model

As an initial step for future genetic manipulations to improve forage characteristics of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), an efficient tissue culture system was established and the factors affecting plant regeneration were evaluated. MS medium containing 5 ㎎/L 2,4-D was optimal for embryogenic callus induction from mature seed and had a strong effect on successive plant regeneration. The plant regeneration frequency was observed at above 70% when embryogenic calli induced were transferred to N6 medium supplemented with 1 ㎎/L 2,4-D and 5 ㎎/L BA. Among several basic media tested, MS and M6 medium were optimal for callus induction and plant regeneration, respectively. Genotype was an important factor in plant regenerability. 'Jeanne' showed the highest regeneration frequency of 73%. A short tissue culture period and high-frequency regeneration system established in this study will be useful for molecular breeding of Italian ryegrass through genetic transformation.
