과학자가 되려면 다른 학문에 비해 어렵고 특히 기초과학연구를 하는 과학자의 경우는 더욱 어려운 공부를 계속하여야 한다. 그러나 이것은 과학자 스스로 택한 고난의 길이기에 이들은 한결같이 과학자가 된 것을 만족하게 생각하고 있다. 과학자가 되기위해 험난한 인생의 가시밭길을 무수히 헤치고 살아온 박동길박사. 박동길박사는 약관 20세에 도일, 과학자가 되기 위해 살을 여의는 듯한 고생을 무릅쓰고 오직 학업에만 열중했다. 박동길박사가 과학기술에 관심을 갖고 지금까지 걸어온 배경과 지질학을 연구하게 된 동기를 알아보는데는 까마득한 박박사의 어린시절로 돌아가야 할 것 같다. 이래서 본지는 이번호부터 박동길박사를 모셨다. <편집자주>
황금 에탄올 추출물에 의한 인간 신장암 세포주 Caki-1의 G2/M arrest 유발

Objectives : In the present study, we investigated the effects of ethanol extract of Scutellaria baicalensis (EESB) on the progression of cell cycle in human renal cell carcinoma Caki-1 cells. Methods : The effects of EESB on cell growth and apoptosis induction were evaluated by trypan blue dye exclusion assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The mRNA and protein levels were determined by Western blot analysis and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results : It was found that EESB treatment on Caki-1 cells resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth and induced apoptotic cell death as detected by Annexin V-FITC staining. The flow cytometric analysis indicated that EESB resulted in G2/M arrest in cell cycle progression which was associated with the down-regulation of cyclin A expression. Our results also revealed that treatment with EESB increased the mRNA and proteins expression of tumor suppressor p53 and cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) inhibitor p21(WAF1/CIP1), without any noticeable changes in cyclin B1, Cdk2 and Cdc2. In addition, the incubation of cells with EESB resulted in a significant increase in the binding of p21 and Cdk2 and Cdc2. These findings suggest that EESB-induced G2/M arrest and apoptosis in Caki-1 cells is mediated through the p53-mediated upregulation of Cdk inhibitor p21. Conclusions : Taken together, these findings suggest that EESB may be a potential chemotherapeutic agent and further studies will be needed to identify the biological active compounds that confer the anti-cancer activity of S. baicalensis.
과학기술 보도의 대중화와 활성화를 위한 탐색적 연구 : 과학 전문가 심층 인터뷰를 중심으로

This study is an exploratory paper aimed at seeking ways to popularize and revitalize science and technology reporting. The development of science and technology is advancing exponentially and becoming increasingly sophisticated, but media coverage of science and technology, which needs to resonate with the public, is failing to keep pace with these changes. Until now, science and technology reporting has faced issues such as overuse of technical terms, content too difficult for the general public to understand, and performance-oriented reporting, resulting in low public comprehension. This study aims to identify these current situations and problems and explore ways to increase public interest and participation in science and technology reporting. To this end, this study conducted in-depth interviews with 15 experts, including scientists, public relations officers, and science journalists, to examine the current state and problems of science and technology reporting, changes in media environment and audience, and ways to revitalize science and technology reporting. The analysis results are as follows: First, problems in science and technology reporting were identified as ‘innovation-centered reporting’, ‘difficulty in understanding for the general public’, ‘performance-oriented reporting’, and ‘lack of qualitative reporting’. Second, changes and demands of the audience suggested improving public understanding and participation in science and technology through interesting storytelling, forming emotional connections, and utilizing visual elements. Third, specific utilization methods such as ‘visualization of science news’, ‘creation of immersive content’, and ‘use of social media’ were proposed. This study is significant in that it provides a research foundation and basic data that can enhance the effectiveness of science and technology reporting and revitalize science communication.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has rapidly become th procedure of choice for most patients with symptomatic gallbladder disease. Many physicians, however, believe that the laparoscopic surgery may be contraindicated in patients presenting with acute cholecystitis. Its use in acute cholecystitis may be associated with highier costs and complication rates. It is not known which patients with acute cholecystitis are likely to require conversion to open cholecystectomy based on preoperative data or if a cooling-off period with medical therapy can diminish inflammation and increase the chance of successful laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Recently, a number of small clinical series have been published that suggest that laparoscopic surgery may in fact be performed safely in the setting of acute inflammation. Twenty two cases of laparoscopic cholecystectomy done by the authors, including 8 cases on acute cholecystitis, between 7/92 and 6/93 were reviewed. Data on cases of acute cholecystitis were prospectively collected on standardized data forms. The mean operation time for acute cholecystitis was 109 minutes(range 80∼140 minutes), and 63 minutes for chronic cholecystitis(range 30∼90 minutes). There was no conversion to open laparotomy on acute cholecystitis. Postoperative complication was one case of referred pain on right shoulder in acute cholecystitis. Postoperative mean hospital stay was 4 days in acute cholecystitis. We made following conclusion from our exeperience ad review of published reports ; 1. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in acute cholecystitis is no more absolute contraindication for well trained and experienced surgeon. 2. The most important parameter in determining the feasibility of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the setting of acute inflammation appears to be experience of the surgeon. Anatomical identification of ductal and vascular system is second most important parameter, and difficulty of grasping follows. 3. Although laparoscopic intervention in such patient is associated with a greater likelihood of conversion to open laparotomy, the incidence of major biliary and nonbiliary complications appears to be low. 4. These patients enjoy the same benefits(short hospital stay and early return to normal activities) of laparoscopic surgery as those undergoing elective surgery.
