Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

Protective effects of human cerebrospinal fluid antioxidants against enzyme inactivation caused by metal-catalyzed oxidation systems were investigated. When purified glutamine synthetase(GS) was incubated with human cerebrospinal fluid(CSF), the enzyme was progressively inactivated. Catalase and EDTA could inhibit the enzyme inactivation by 50-80%. Small-molecular(Mr< -10,000) fraction of CSF inactivated the exogenous GS, but large-molecular(Mr> -10,000) fraction did not. The GS inactivation by the small-molecular fraction was also markedly inhibited by catalase and EDTA. These results suggested that metal-catalyzed oxidation is involved in the GS inactivation by the small-molecular fraction of CSF. Dithiothreitol(DTT) was shown to inhibit almost completely the oxidative inactivation of GS by CSF. However, DTT inhibited only partially the oxidative inactivation of GS caused by small-molecular fraction of CSF. When large-molecular fraction of CSF was separated by anion-exchange HPLC chromatogrpahy, there was a peak of antioxidant activity inhibiting the small-molecular fraction-induced GS inactivation in the presence of DTT. The antioxidant activity was neutralized by monoclonal antibodies to transthyretin. Purified transthyretin was found to efficiently inhibit ascorbate/Cu^(2+)-induced GS inactivation in the presence of DTT. Uric acid and glucose did not show any protective effect on the GS inactivation in the same condition. The above results suggest that metal-catalyzed oxidation occurs normally in human CSF, and that transthyretin may play an important role as a CSF antioxidant in protecting proteins from metal-catalyzed oxidation.

1986~2000년까지 대전광역시 동구 일대에서 나비류를 조사한 결과, 총 5科 70屬 103種이 확인되었다. 種 數가 가장 풍부한 科는 네발나비科로 54種이 조사되었다. 우점종은 흰나비 科의 배추흰나비로 16.1%의 우점도를 기록하였다. 각 월별 우점종을 분석한 결과 4·5·6월에는 배추흰나비, 7·9·10월에는 네발나비, 8월에는 호랑나비가 우점종으로 나타났다. 생물지리학적 위치의 분포 분석 결과, 조사된 나비류 103種 중 72種이 구북구계의 種으로 나타났다. 환경부에서 지정 고시한 멸종 위기 및 보호종으로 지정된 6종의 나비류 중 쌍꼬리부선나비, 왕은점표범나비 등 2종류가 조사되었다. 또한 국내에서는 발생하고 있지 않은 미접(迷?)으로 먹나비가 채집되었다. Butterfly fauna from Daejeon Metropolitan City was investigated from 1986 to 2000. As the result, a total of 103 species of 70 genera under 5 families were identified. The number of species was the most abundantly revealed in the family Nymphalidae(54 species). The most dominant species in the present investigation was Pieris rupae (Linnaeus) (16.1%, Piendae). As the rusults of biogeographical distribution, 72 species of 103 species were Palaerctic region. Among 6 species listed in the Red Book by Ministry of Environment(l997), 2 species are found in this collection. Melanitis leda (Linnaeus) as accidental butterfly was collected.
RAPD와 핵 리보솜 DNA ITS2 염기서열에 의한 한국산 전나무속 식물의 유전적 변이 및 계통유전학적 분석

We analyzed the genetic variation and phylogenetic relationship among fourteen taxa of GenusAbies distributed in Korea using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 2 sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (rDNA). RAPDs were used for identification of selected taxa by amplification using single 10-mer primers of arbitrary sequence. Fourteen taxa were clearly classified with 10 arbitrary primers, which generated 102 useful polymorphic bands that were evaluated according to the presence or absence of the fragments of equal size. The genetic distance between A. koreana for. chlorocarpa and A. koreana for. rubrocarpa was 0.127, showing the closest among any other pairs. By comparing the base sequences in the ITS2 region of the nuclear rDNA, genetic relationship was assesed among selected taxa. It showed twenty six sites of point mutation (base substitution) in 243 base pairs (bp) of ITS2 region. The G+C contents of ITS2 region were ranged from 58.3% to 61.7%. The value of nucleotide divergence among selected taxa was ranged from 0.4% to 9.8%. These results showed that RAPD and ITS2 sequence analysis was a useful tool for elucidating phylogenetic relationship and selection of specific marker in Abies species.
치료 불응성 Still's병에서 자가 조혈모세포 채집시 사용된 G-CSF에 의한 급성 악화 1예

치료 불응성 자가면역질환에서 고용량 항암화학요법 및 자가 조혈모세포이식술이 시행되고 있으나 조혈모세포 가동화 및 이식술 시 사용되는 G-CSF에 의해 오히려 기존의 자가면역질환의 증세가 악화되었다는 보고가 있다. 저자들은 만성적으로 재발되는 Still's병 환자에서 조혈모세포 가동화를 위해 사용한 G-CSF에 의해 자가면역질환이 급성 악화된 1예를 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다. High-dose immunosuppressive therapy with autologous stem cell transplantation is an increasingly used treatment for severe refractory autoimmune disorder including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile chronic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus. Although the optimal method of collecting stem cell is not determined, G-CSF-based mobilization is generally considered safe. However, worsening of disease status was reported in autoimmune disease undergoing mobilization with G-CSF. We report a 24-year-old male with refractory Still's disease who developed acute disease flare after administration of G-CSF for stem cell mobilization.

Primary aldosteronism is a syndrome characterized by hypertension, hypokalemia, suppressed plasma renin activity, and elevated serum aldosterone levels. Conn first described it 1955 in association with adrenal cortical adenoma(Conn's syndrome). Today, it can be divided into at least six distinctive sub-groups. The diagnosis of primary aldosteronism is usually suspected when the patient presents with poorly controlled hypertension with hypokalemia. The main issues in the evaluation of primary aldosteronism are to differentiate an adenoma from hyperplasia and to localize the adenoma. Basic hormonal studies and computed tomographic(CT) scanning can be used effectively for that differentiation. An adenoma is one of a few potentially curable forms of hypertension, and it is best treated by removing the adrenal tumor. We experienced a case of a typical adrenal adenoma. The patient was a 37-year-old male who had experienced in both his legs over a period of several days a weakness due to hypokalemia. He was diagnosed using basic hormonal studies and adrenal CT scanning. After, he received laparoscopic adrenalectomy and was discharged with improved condition.
