        BEAT: IN SEARCH OF THE ORIGINAL FORM OF KOREAN CULTURE

        This essay was originally presented as the keynote speech at the Keimyung International Conference on Korean Studies in Celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Keimyung University entitled, “The Korean Beat: In Search of the Origins of Korean Culture.” In his speech Professor Hwang Byung-ki [Hwang Pyŏnggi] provided a rapt audience with a magisterial overview of the role of percussion and percussion instruments in traditional Korean music and daily life. In this essay he introduces the major instruments from the various musical traditions of Korea, including Shamanism, Buddhism, the Confucian court, the yangban literati, and the farming community. Both the defining characteristics of instruments such as the hourglass drum (changgu), clapper (pak), barrel drum (puk), and also the major Korean rhythmic forms are explained with admirable clarity, making this complex subject easily accessible to the non-specialist. The essay concludes with a brief examination of the ways in which rhythm has permeated the daily life of Koreans in such simple acts as the woodcutter beating out a rhythm on his A-frame carrier with a stick or a woman enlivening her chores in the kitchen by beating on an upturned water scoop made from a gourd. By cherishing and cultivating these rhythms, the author argues, Koreans will open up “a new era in musical creation.”

      • 현대무용 Back-Hop 동작의 운동 역학적 특성 분석

        The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematic and reaction force variables of Back-Hop motion using four professional dancer in Modern Dance. The movement of Back-Hop were filmed on video camera (Panasonic, WV-CP, 30frame/sec), were analysis of reaction force on reaction board(AMTI, MCA6) by each subject. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Jump For the high jump and increased staying time in the air When the subjects performed Back-Hop motion, the grow larger distance and velocity of COG in vertical direction and angle and angular velocity of each joint on lower limb. When the reaction force presented double times of each subject's body weight, it showed high jump of Back-Hop motion 2. In the air When the subject performed Back-Hop motion, subjects extended to hip, knee, ankle angle of staying in the air. because of this reason, joint extension were relatively the beauty of factor 3. Touchdown When the subject performed Back-Hop motion, subjects presented to decrease horizontal, frontal, vertical velocity of the COG at touchdown and extend to hip angle, flex to knee, ankle angle for the stable touchdown.

      • 포괄수가지불제도 적용에 따른 산부인과 진료수입의 변화

        Objectives: Under the fee-for-service system, Korean hospitals have been suffering from the worsening profitability caused by law medical care fees. To overcome the difficulties, they have maximized the quantity of medical services and made relatively large investment in developing new medical services using high-priced medical equipment, medicines and medical supplies which were not covered by medical insurance system rather than reduced running costs. Materials and Methods: This study was made to analyze and forecast the revenue change of the department of Obstetrics and gynecology of an university hospital in Seoul, expecting the implementation of DRG system in 2000. Results: The results were as follows : 1.During the first two days of hospitalization. 41% of total medical service fee was occurred, which was thought that most of the check-ups and operations were made during this period. After two days of hospitalization, the new occurrence of medical service fee tended to reduce. 2.Out of total medical service fee, 67% of admission fee was occurred after 5 days of hospitalization. This was because medical service fees in obstetrics and gynecology department occurred during the first 5 days of hospitalization. 3.Out of fees for operation, treatment, medical supplies and blood transfusion. 71% was occurred during the first two days. 4. In case of fees for examination, 50% was occurred during the first two days. 5.A total of 53% of fees for medication and injection was occurred during the first 5 days. Conclusions: By the implementation of the DRG system, the income is forecast to increase by 800 won to 310,000 won by the disease group of obstetrics and gynecology department. To increase hospital income with the implementation of DRG system, the results of this study suggest that examinations should be done at out-patient departments before the hospitalization of patient, the discharge of patient should be noticed in advance to reduce the period of hospitalization, and admission appointment system should be implemented for the immediate operation and delivery.

        Atactic Polypropylene, a byproduct obtained in the manufacture of isotatic polypropylene, has been synthesed under various reaction conditions. In this study, suspension graft polymerizations of Vinylchloride onto Atatic polypropylene were carried out in aqueous with benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The effect on the grafting efficiency and reaction rate was observed by varing APP concentration Also, reactivity onto each hydrogen is the most good tertiary hydrogen among primary, secondary and tertiary. If the vinyl chloride concentration contains small in the polymerization, graftmer have carbonyl group, abnomal structure.

      • 西洋音樂 創作에 미친 東洋音樂의 影響

        Western music began with the medieval chants which originated in the Orient; but its characteristics, distinct from those of Asian music, were formed from the 11th century, with the independence of the Western European culture, to Baroque Age of the 17th century, during which European music had developed autonomously, exclusive of the Orient. Yearning for the Orient in the Enlightenment Age of the 18th century, opera-composers began to use Oriental libretti and consequently tried to depict an Oriental atmosphere in their musical compositions. In the meantime, such composers as Mozart and Beethoven composed instrumental music with 'alla turka' influenced by the music of Turkish military bands. In the 19th century, many Romantic composers had great admiration for the Orient, and especially after Felicien David toured oriental countries and introduced Oriental melodies into his compositions, many exotic masterpieces, including Verdi's Aida and Saint-Saene's instrumental pieces, were produced. On the other hand, nationalistic composers of peripheral European countries, including Russia, tried to assimilate their Oriental folk musical resources into European Romantic music. However, the influence of Asian music on Western composition up to the 19th century Romanticism, had gone no further than adding an exotic flavor to European music. With Debussy's Impressionism in the early 20th century, the influence of Asian music came to have a new significance, in that Asian music inspired and helped western composers to explore new tonal systems which were needed to replace the traditional functional harmony. Bartok, a 20th century Hungarian Nationalist, who aimed at finding a universal language from Oriental folk music rather than composing nationalistic pieces like those of the Russian Nationalists, was seriously concerned not only with Hungarian folk music but also with other foreign folk music. On the other hand, American composers, who wanted to deviate from their position of subordination to European music, introduced non-European elements into their compositions. In this situation which prevailed in the early 20th century, Messiaen tried to establish his own musical language, absorbing various musical culture of the East and West, tending towards 'world music'. While this tendency to 'world music' was taken over by the post-war generation composers such as Boulez and Stockhausen, John Cage, influenced by Asian aesthetics and philosophy of music, revolutionized the concepts of musical composition, performance, and even of music itself. Thus, the influence of Asian music on Western composition has been gradually moving from the exotic or extrinsic to the constituent or intrinsic. During the 20th century, Western music has spread throughout the world and commingled with non-European music in multifarious ways. Perhaps the relationship between Asian music and western music will be no longer that of 'influence' but of 'confluence' resulting in the creation of 'global music' in our time.

        한국인 성인 남성 폐쇄성수면무호흡 환자의 측모 두부 방사선계측학적 비교

        본 연구는 비만도에 따른 한국인 남성 폐쇄성수면무호흡 환자의 측모 두부 방사선계측학적 특성을 파악하기 위하여 시행되었다. 이를 위하여 계명대학교 의과대학 동산의료원 수면클리닉에 수면장애를 주소로 내원하여 수면다원검사 후 치과에서 측모 두부방사선계측사진 촬영을 한 87명의 성인 환자들을 체질량지수(BMI)와 수면무호흡지수(AHI)에 따라 비비만 단순코골이군(Non-obese, simple snorers), 비만 단순코골이군(Obese, simple snorers), 비비만 수면 무호흡군(Non-obese, OSA patients), 비만 수면무호흡군(Obese, OSA patients)의 4군으로 나누어 비교하였다. 그결과, 4군 중 비만 수면무호흡군의 수면무호흡지수가 가장 컸으며, 비만 수면무호흡군보다 비비만 수면무호흡군의 하악각이 더 크고 혀 길이는 더 작았다. 또한, 비비만 수면무호흡군보다 비만수면무호흡군의 설골이 더 전하방에 위치하였고, 수면무호흡지수에 영향을 미치는 기여 인자는 비만 수면무호흡군에서는 혀 길이, 비비만 수면무호흡군에서는 설골의 후방위치였다. 이처럼 비만 수면무호흡 환자와 비비만 수면무호흡 환자의 측모 두부방사선계측학적 특성과 기여 인자가 다르게 나타나므로, 치료방법도 따라서 다르게 선택해야 할 것이다. 비만 수면무호흡 환자들에게는 먼저 체중감량이 권고되어야 할 것이고, 비비만 수면무호흡 환자들은 폐쇄부위에 따라 구강 내 장치나 Nasal CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), UPPP (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) 등이 추천될 수 있을 것이다. Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the cephalometric measurements of obese and non-obese Korean male patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). Methods: Eighty-seven adults who had visited the Sleep Disorder Clinic Center in Keimyung University, Daegu, Korea were examined and evaluated with polysomnography (PSG) and lateral cephalogram. They were divided into 4 groups (non-obese simple snorers, obese simple snorers, non-obese OSA patients, obese OSA patients) according to AHI (Apnea-Hypopnea Index) and BMI (Body Mass Index). Results: The obese OSA group had the highest AHI among the 4 groups. The non-obese OSA group had a significantly steeper mandibular angle and shorter tongue length than the obese OSA group. The hyoid bone of the obese OSA group was positioned anterior and inferior as compared with the non-obese OSA group. Multiple regression analysis showed that tongue length in the obese OSA group and retroposition of hyoid bone in the non-obese OSA group were significant determinants for the severity of AHI. Conclusions: From a cephalometric point of view, the obese and non-obese pateints with OSA may be characterized by different pathogeneses. Therefore, they have to be managed by individualized treatment. For the obese OSA patients, weight control must be advised as a first choice and for the non-obese OSA patients, oral appliance, nasal CPAP, UPPP and others could be chosen according to the obstructive sites.

      • 대두박에 대한 extrusion처리 및 formaldehyde처리가 젖소의 반추위내 in situ분해율에 미치는 영향

        This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of temperature of extrusion processing on ruminal degradation characteristics of soybean meal. Four ruminally cannulated Holstein cows were employed to in situ trial and treatments were composed of soybean meals untreated(Control), extruded at 115, 130 and 155℃, and treated with 0.3% formaldehyde(HCHO). The nylon bags were suspended for 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 hours in the rumen, respectively. Animals fed the diet of 50 : 50 in concentrate and orchard grass hay at 110% of NRC(1988) requirements, and were freely access to water and mineral block. The regression equations for degradation characteristics and effective degradability(ED) of crude protein of soybean meals in the rumen were obtained as follows. Control P = 26.41 + 69.86(1-e^-0.041t) ; ED(k=0.05) = 57.89% 115℃ extrusion P = 3.39 + 44.76(1-e^-0.013t) ; ED(k=0.05) = 12.63% 130℃ extrusion P = 2.79 + 56.60(1-e^-0.015t) ; ED(k=0.05) = 15.85% 155℃ extrusion P = 1.71 + 31.48(1-e^-0.018t) ; ED(k=0.05) = 0.04% 0.3% HCHO P = 7.23 + 35.14(1-e^-0.015t) ; ED(k=0.05) = 15.34% where, P = Degradability during the time(t) suspended in the rumen, k = Passage rate at the rumen(%/hr/100). Ruminal degradabilities of dry matter, crude protein, organic matter and energy significantly (P<.01) decreased by extrusion or HCHO treatments, but did not affected by the temperature of extrusion processing. The ruminal degradation of soybean meals treated extrusion and formaldehyde, paticularly crude protein, was low beyond expectation.

      • 도장작업시 유해인자들의 노출수준과 작업환경관리실태

        Objectives: For the purpose of preparing the fundamental data and assessing the status of exposure level of chemical substances in painting process. Methods and Materials: The author determined the concentration of organic solvents, lead(Pb), Chromium(Cr), and Toluene-2, 4-diisocyanate(TDI) in air of painting process to 90 industries classified by 15 types of manufacturing industry during a period from Jan. 1st 2001 to Dec. 31st 2001. Results: The results were as follows: 1. The geometric mean level of each chemical substance was 0.1706 ppm for exposure index in organic solvents, 0.0019㎎/㎥ for Pb, 0.0024 ㎎/㎥ for Cr, and 0.0004ppm for TDI, respectively. 2. The exposure level of each chemical substances by type of painting was the highest in dipping and brush painting for organic solvent, in spray-painting for TDI, and in spray gun-painting for Pb and Cr, respectively. 3. The exposure level of each chemical substances by type of local ventilation equipment was higher in enclosed and booth type for organic solvents. Cr, and TDI, and in exterior type for Pb, respectively than those of other types. 4. The exposure level of each chemical substances by type of hazardous material arresting media was higher in using water for organic substances, in using bag filter for Pb, TDI, respectively than those of other types. Conclusion: According to above results, this study suggests that the exposure level by type of industry exceeded the exposure level in wooden furniture and metal furniture manufacturing industry for organic solvents and Pb, respectively.
