        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods : For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results : In 1997. 99 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 45(45.5%) were PPNG. Conclusion : The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 45.5% in 1997.

        최인호 소설에 나타난 종교적 세계관과 성찰의 서사

        본고에서는 최인호의 작가 의식을 지배하고 있는 종교적 세계관을 통해 1970~80년대의 시대에 대한 성찰을 시도하고자 했다. 먼저 ‘실존 탐구와 기독교적 사유’에서는 기독교의 윤리의식과 사상이 어떻게 작품의 주제와 연결되고 있으며, 주인물의 내적 변화에 관여하는지를 알 수 있다. 다음으로 ‘구도적 열망과 실천 자세의 모색’에서는 『길 없는 길』의 ‘경허’를 통한 참된 ‘나’와 중생을 위한 구체적인 ‘실천’에 관한 물음을 던진다. 이를 통해 현실을 직시하고 비판적으로 대처하는 실천적인 지식인의 모습을 강조한다. 이러한 고찰은 당대 사회의 부조리를 비판하고 종교적 정신으로 대안을 찾으려는 공통점이 있다. 여기에는 현실적 삶의 제한성을 극복한 본질적 삶에 대한 내적인 욕구가 반영되어 있다. 또한 개인의 구제와 사회의 구제는 불가분의 관계에 놓여 있다는 것을 다시 한 번 확인하게 한다. 이와 같이 최인호의 소설에 나타난 종교적 세계관을 통해 당대의 시대를 성찰해 보는 것은, 자본주의 근대화의 극복과 당대 시대에 대한 최인호의 문학적 고민을 알 수 있게 한다. 더 나아가 최인호의 문학세계를 폭넓게 논의해 보는 계기를 준다. This is an article about the religious outlook and mind of an author, Choi, In-ho who is one of famous writers in the 70-80's in Korea. Some of his books, The Urban Hunter and A windmill in my heart are stories that are based on an Christian recognition and ontological looking. One of his book, The Pathless Way, is a story that is based on a Buddhist idea and view. These books are reflected different religious agenda, especially Catholic or Buddhism but a similar theme what is a way of researching oneself of leading characters desperately. Among of these are stories about serious social problems. These are caused a serious capitalism and an brutal industrialism in Korea at that time. The observation of Choi, In-ho through his books proposes to solve problems of social absurdities with religious spirits. As a result, books of Choi In-ho reflect on the contemporary era through the religious world view. And then he tries to see the essence and the worth of the human-life in the modernization of capitalism society in his books. His own literary thinking is about the need of religious pure mind. He focuses Catholic ideology as well as Buddhist idea. These kind of literary thinking make his literary world view put on his books. His novels are the so-called process of finding a way. These novels are processes of the realization of himself as well as readers in social absurdities. This article will be an opportunity to discuss about novels of Choi In-ho actively.

      • Natural products used as a chemical library for protein–protein interaction targeted drug discovery

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Protein–protein interactions (PPIs), which are essential for cellular processes, have been recognized as attractive therapeutic targets. Therefore, the construction of a PPI-focused chemical library is an inevitable necessity for future drug discovery. Natural products have been used as traditional medicines to treat human diseases for millennia; in addition, their molecular scaffolds have been used in diverse approved drugs and drug candidates. The recent discovery of the ability of natural products to inhibit PPIs led us to use natural products as a chemical library for PPI-targeted drug discovery. In this study, we collected natural products (NPDB) from non-commercial and in-house databases to analyze their similarities to small-molecule PPI inhibitors (iPPIs) and FDA-approved drugs by using eight molecular descriptors. Then, we evaluated the distribution of NPDB and iPPIs in the chemical space, represented by the molecular fingerprint and molecular scaffolds, to identify the promising scaffolds, which could interfere with PPIs. To investigate the ability of natural products to inhibit PPI targets, molecular docking was used. Then, we predicted a set of high-potency natural products by using the iPPI-likeness score based on a docking score-weighted model. These selected natural products showed high binding affinities to the PPI target, namely XIAP, which were validated in an <I>in vitro</I> experiment. In addition, the natural products with novel scaffolds might provide a promising starting point for further medicinal chemistry developments. Overall, our study shows the potency of natural products in targeting PPIs, which might help in the design of a PPI-focused chemical library for future drug discovery.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This paper provides <I>in silico</I> drug discovery strategy to identify natural products capable to inhibit the protein–protein interactions. </LI> <LI> The predicted PPI inhibitor-like natural products were validated in an in vitro experiment. </LI> <LI> The XIAP inhibitor LENP0044 could be used as a potent template for further chemical optimization. </LI> <LI> Natural products can be used as potent candidates in the design of a PPI-focused chemical library for drug discovery. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • 신고리 지역 기상관측을 통한 계절별 대기안정도 특성분석

        In this study, we analyzed the characteristics of atmospheric stability to investigate local environment change at an atomic power plant in Gori region. The used data was obtained from field observation of major meteorological variables such as wind direction and speed, air temperature, relative humidity, and solar radiation using AWS (Automatic Weather System) in Gori region from February to September in 2003. As a result, when strong northerly winds (more than 4~6 m/s) and weak northwesterly winds (2~3m/s) blow, atmospheric stability was neutral and stable from winter to spring, respectively. Atmospheric stability (neutral) in summer was similar to that in two other seasons (winter and spring), but it was stable for weak southwesterly winds (2~3 m/s). Finally, atmospheric stability was neutral for strong winds (over 4~6 m/s) in fall without respect to wind direction, while that was stable for very weak winds (less than 2 m/s).

        KCCH cyclotron neutron 및 60Co r-ray에 의한 인체 말초혈액 임파구의 염색체 이상측정

        KCCH cyclotron neutron(30cCy/min) 및 ??Co γ-ray(210cGy/min)를 시험관내의 정상 인체 말초혈액임파구에 조사하여 염색체이상(dicentric 및 centric ring)을 관찰하고 이의 선량-반응관계식을 linear model(Y=K₁D+a), power-law model(Y=K₂Dⁿ), quadratic model(Y=K₃D²) 및 linear-quadratic model(Y=αD+βD²)을 사용하여 구하고 이들 model중 염색체이상의 측정치와 가장 일치하는 관계식을 근거로 하여 γ -ray에 대한 neutron의 relative biological effectiveness(RBE)를 산출하였다. 염색체 이상(dicentric plus centric ring)의 발생분포는 γ-ray의 경우 linear model(P=0.067)을 제외한 power-law model[Y=(5.81±1.96)×10??, P=0.931], quadratic model [Y=(3.91±0.09)×10?D², P=0.972] 및 linear-quadratic model [Y=(6.55±6.83)×10?D+(3.72±0.22)×10?D², P=0.922]에 적합하였다. Neutron의 경우 linear model [Y=(6.12±0.17)×10?³ D-022, P=0.987]에 가장 일치하였고 quadratic model (P<0.005)을 제외한 power-law model[Y=(2.43±0.70)×10?³D+(1.21±0.39)×10?D², P=0.415]에 비교적 적합하였다. 세포당 0.1-1.5개의 염색체이상을 나타내는 neutron의 γ-ray에 대한 RBE는 2.714±0.408이었다. The frequencies of KCCH cyclotron neutron(30cCy/min) or ??Co γ-ray(210cGy/min)-induced asymmetrical interchanges(dicentrics and centric ring) and acentric fragment(deletion) at several doses were measured in the normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Chromosome aberrations were scored at the first nitosis after stimulation with phytohemagglutinin. The neutron and γ-ray data were analysed on liner, power-law, quadratic and linear-quadratic model. When the dicentrics and centric rings of γ-ray datas were pooled and fitted to these model, good fits were obtained to power-law [Y=(5.81±1.96)×10??, P=0.931], quadratic [Y=(3.91±0.09)×10?D², P=0.972] 및 linear-quadratic model [Y=(6.55±6.83)×10?D+(3.72±0.22)×10?D², P=0.922] except for linear model(P=0.067). As in the case of neutron data, the best fits was obtained to the linear model [Y=(6.12±0.17)×10?³ D-022, P=0.987] and good fits were obtained to power-law[Y=(5.36±3.02)×10?⁴D??, P=0.601] and linear-quadratic model [Y=(2.43±0.70)×10?³D+(1.21±0.39)×10?D², P=0.415], except for quadratic model (P<0.005). The relative biological effectiveness(RBE) of neutron compared with γ-ray was estimated by best fitting model. In the asymmetrical interchanges range between 0.1 and 1.5 per cell, the REE was found to be 2.714±0.408.

        The Guaranteed Frame Rate(GFR) service has been designed to accomodate non-real-time applications, such as TCP/IP based traffic in ATM networks. The GFR service not only guarantees a minimum throughput at the frame level, but also supports a fair share of available resources. In this paper, we propose a cell control algorithm which can improve the fairness and the throughput through the traffic control in GFR service. For the evaluation of a proposed scheme, we compare the proposed scheme with the existing scheme in the fairness and the throughput. Simulation results that the proposed scheme can improve the fairness and throughput than the existing scheme.

      • 이동물체의 기하학적 특성에 기인한 움직임 정보 추출

        In this paper, we have proposed an effective moving objects tracking method based on the motion information in the video sequence. First, we extract the moving objects using the processes of morphological dilation and differential image in the video sequence and then we extract the motion information utilizing the location and orientation of the moving objects in the subsequent images. The motion information is extracted using various statistical measurements, extracting the high-level features from the regions of pixels in the images. The measurements, such a s area, length, perimeter, orientation, elongation, compactness, moments of inertia, are used as the statistical and geometrical descriptors. The principle axes of an object on this features gives the local direction of the object, while the center of gravity gives the center position of the object. The angle between two principal axes of the moving objects in the consecutive images gives the geometrical direction of the moving object, while the displacement of the center of gravity, gives the distance covered by the moving objects. So we have extracted the global motion information using the principal axes and center of gravity. The simulation results on the test images are very good, where either the motion is very slow, or the frame rate is very high.

      • 인체 간 Microsome에서의 우슬 추출물의 Cytochrome P450 약물 대사효소에 대한 억제작용

        Objective : Achyranthes bidentata radix (Usul) has been used as anti-arthritic, antiallergic, antidiuretic and so on Recently extracts of Achyranthes bidentata radix have shown anti-inflammatory and cancer preventive effects in vitro and in vivo. Methods : We therefore evaluated the inhibitory potential of ehtanol extracts of Achyranthes bidentata radix on cytochrome P450(CYP) isoforms-catalyzecd reactions, which relate to causes of cancer and inflammation, including CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2E1, CYP2D6, CYP2C8, and CYP3A4, using human liver microsomal preparations. Results : The extracts showed weak or negligible inhibitory effects on CYP2C9-catalyzed (S)-warfarin 7-hydroxylation, CYP2C19-catalyzed S-mephenytoin 4-hydroxylation, and CYP2D6-catalyzed dextromethorphan O-demethylation with each IC50 over 1750 g/㎖, respectively. However, it showed relatively significant inhibitory effect on CYP1A2-catalyzed phenacetin O-deethylation and CYP2E1-catalyzed chloizoxazone 6-hydroxylation with IC50s of 970.5 g/㎖ and 821.4 g/㎖, respectively. Conclusions : These results suggest that extracts of Achyranthes bidentata radix have inhibitory effects on CYP-catalyzed reactions, expeciallyCYP1A2 and CYP2E1, in human liver microsomes. These effects appear to relate to anti-inflammatory and cancer prevention following decrease of reactive oxygen species formed by CYP, especially CYP1A2 and CYP2E1, by Achyranthes bidentata radix. However, further evaluation is necessary to demonstrate and to confirm its effects in human.

      • 생쥐 위장관의 Interstitial cells of Cajal(ICC)에 대한 면역조직화학적 연구

        Background and Objectives : Interstitial cells of Cajal(ICC) are the pacemakers in gastrointestinal tract that modulates gastrointestinal motiliey and these cells also transmit neural input from enteric nerves to smooth muscles. Recent work on tissues from patients with motility disorders that suggest that loss or defect in ICC could be related to pathophysiology in human and animal models. Immunolabelling of ICC in intestinal wall is recently developed by using specific marker, anti-c-kit antibody. Immunohistochemistry was done for ICC network in attempt to provide a morphological basis for the mechanism regulating gastrointestinal motility Methods : Cryosection was done, and whole-mount preparations of mouse stomach, gastrointestinal tract were immunolabelled using the anti-c-Kit. Immunolabelled ICC networks were observed under a confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results : According to three dimensional reconstruction study, we found that the c-Kit-positive celluar networks were widely distributed in the gastrointestinal muscle (1) circular muscle layer(IC-IM), (2) myenteric plexus(IC-MY), (3) deep muscular plexus(IC-DMP) in ileum, (4) submucosal plexus(IC-SMP) and longitudinal muscle layer(IC-LM) in colon. Conclusion : The characteristic profiles of ICC celluar networks provide a morphological basis upon the mechanism regulating gastrointestinal motility. Additional studies for the enteric nerves-ICC interaction are need to evaluate the detailed roles of Icc in gastrointestinal tract.

        서울과 부산지역 기상의 영향을 제거한 오존농도 추세

        Surface ozone concentrations are highly sensitive to meteorological variability. Therefore, in order to reveal the long-term changes in ozone due to the changes in precursor emissions, we need to remove the effects of meteorological fluctuations on the annual distribution of surface ozone. In this paper, the meteorologically adjusted trends of daily maximum surface ozone concentrations in two major Korean cities(Seoul and Busan) are investigated based on ozone data from II(Seoul) and 6(Busan) sites over the period 1992~2000. The original time series consisting of the logarithm of daily maximum ozone concentrations are splitted into long-term, seasonal and short-term component using Kolmogorov-Zurbenko(KZ) filter. Meteorological effects are removed from filtered ozoned ozone series using multiple linear regression based on meteorologcial variables. The long term evolution of ozone forming capability due to changes in precursor emission can be obtained applying the KZ filter to the residuals of the regression. The results indicated that meteorologically adjusted long-term daily maximum ozone concentrations had a significant upward trend(Seoul:+3.02%yr¹, Busan: +3.45%yr¹). These changes of meteorologically adjusted ozone concentrations represent the effects of changing background ozone concentrations as well as the more localized changes in emissions.
