This paper investigates the problems in the measurement regarding corporate income tax smoothing. Past studies generalyy based conclusions on the degree or frequency of apparent tax smoothing behavior identified among sample firms. This investigated two problems in the past studies. The first problem is that much of what appears as tax smoothing may occur "naturally" i.e., without any conscious intent by management to regulate fluctuations in its exemption codes. The second problem lies in the measurement ration of tax smoothing, which may overestimate the fluctuations is corporate income tax. In sum, this study proposed a general methods which taked the possibilities naturally tax smoothing by management and provided the method exactly to measure the smoothness.
비소세포 폐암종에서 Epidiermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)의 발현 양상

배경: 비소세포 폐암종에서 epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)의 발현이 예후에 미치는 영향에 대해서는 아직 일치된 결론에 이르지 못하고 있으며, 비소세포 폐암종의 조직 병리학적 소견으로는 종양의 진행 및 예후에 대해 예측이 불가능하다. 이에 저자들은 종양의 EGFR 발현과 임상 및 병리학적 특징과의 관계를 관찰하였다. 재료 및 방법: 1990년부터 2004년까지 순천향 대학교 천안병원에서 수술로 절제된 95명 환자의 포르말린에 고정한 파라핀 포매 조직을 이용하여 EGFR 항체를 이용한 면역조직화착 검사를 시행하였으며 이의 결과를 환자의 임상양상과 병리학적 소견과 비교 분석하였다. 결과: EGFR 발현과 환자의 생존기간을 비롯한 성별, TNM 임상병기, TU댕기, N-병기와는 관련이 없었으나 조직학적 유형중 편평상피암종은 47예중 43예가 양성 반응을 보여 통계학적으로 의미 있는 상관관계를 보였다(p=0.005). 그 외에 성별, 조직학적 유형, TNM 임상병기, T-병기, N-병기중 어떠한 변수도 생존기간과의 연관성을 보이지 않았다. 결론: 비소세포 폐암종에서 EGFR의 발현은 환자의 생존기간 및 임상병리학적 소견과 유의한 상관관계를 보이지 않으므로 예후인자로서의 이용은 현재로선 불가능하여 좀 더 많은 증례를 통한 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다. Background: The prognostic role of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) remains controversial in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Histopathologic findings cannot adequately predict disease progression, so we investigated the reladonship between EGFR and clinicopathologic feature. Methods: Using immunohistochemical techniques, we retrospecdvely analyzed formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples from 95 padents with resected pathological NSCLCs. Then, we correlated these data with padents' clinical outcome and pathologic finding. Results: No reladonship was found between EGFR overexpression and patient survival when the entire cohort was considered. Multivariate factors including gender, histologic type, TNM stage, T stage and N stage were not correlated to poor outcome. Also, no factors revealed correlation with EGFR overexpression except histologic type. Squamous cell carcinoma showed positive reaction in 43 out of 47 patients(p=0.005). Condusion: This result indicated that EGFR overexpression in NSCLC showed no reladonship with patients' survival. Therefore, EGFR overexpression could not be used as a poor prognostic marker.
열공형과 비열공형 피질하 혈관성 치매에서 위험인자의 차이에 관한 비교 연구

Backgrounds and Objectives: Vascular dementia is a group of dementing disoders arising from various stroke syndrome. Among these. subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD) is regarded as a relatively distinct clinical entity. However, MRI patterns of SIVD are not homogenous. In some patients, lacunes are dominant, and in others, subcortical white matter changes are. This study was designed to compare risk factor profiles between SIVD with and without multiple lacunes. Methods: We divided 47 subjects (22 males, mean age. 68 years) recruited from VADAPET (Multicenter Trial For Evaluation Of The Changes In the PET Images Of Subcortical Vascular Dementia Patient) study into two groups one with more than 5 lacunes in deep gray matter (lacune group) and the other with 5 or less(non-lacune group) Clinical characteristics and laboratory findings of two groups were compared. Results: Nineteen of 47 patients (40%) belonged to the lacune group. The lacune and non-lacune groups d d not differ in the following variables: age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia heart disease, history of stroke or TIA, history of trauma or major surgery, family history of hypertension stroke, or dementia, age at diagnosis of dementia, body mass index, white blood cell count, ESR, CRP, fibrinogen, hemoglobin A1C, total cholesterol. LDL cholesterol creatinine, proteinuria, glucosuria, and microhematuria. However, male sex, smoking alcohol. hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were possibly associated more with lacune group SIVD than with non-lacune group (p<0 1) Multivariate analyses revealed that smoking, hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol were independent predictors of SIVD with multiple lacunes Conclusion: Our study suggests that SIVD with multiple lacunes may be significantly different in smoking habits hemoglobin, and HDL cholesterol from SIVD without multiple lacunes.

In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.
Farnesylcysteine Methyltransferase Activity and Ras Protein Expression in Human Stomach Tumor Tissue

The processing pathway of G-proteins and Ras family proteins includes the isoprenylation of the Cysteine residue, followed by proteolysis of three terminal residues and α-carboxyl methyl esterification of the cysteine residue. Farnesylcysteine methyltransferase(FCMT) activity is responsible for the methylation reaction which play a role in the membrane attachment of a variety of cellular proteins. Four kinds of Ras protein (c-Ha-ras,c-N-Ras,c-Ki-Ras,pan-Ras) expression were detected in adenocarcinoma of human tissue by immunohistochemical method, and hematoxylin and eosin staining. The level of Ras protein in human stomach tumor tissues was much higher than in normal and peritumoral regions of the same biopsy samples. The FCMT activities of each cellular fractions were high in mitochondrial fraction followed by microsomal fraction, whole homogenate and cytosolic fraction. The inhibitory effect on FCMT activity on stomach tumor tissue was determined after treatment with 0.25㎛ of S-adenosyl-_L-homocysteine. S-adenosyl-_L-homocysteine inhibited FCMT activity from 11.2% to 30.5%. These results suggested that FCMT might be involved in Ras proteins activity.

The Effect of Diffuse Lamellar Keratitis on Visual Acuity and Contrast Sensitivity following LASIK

Purpose: To evaluate visual outcome and the changes of contrast sensitivity (CS) after diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK). Methods: Using retrospective chart review, 48 eyes of 25 patients who underwent laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with Visx S4 (VISX Inc., Santa Clara, CA) and M2 (Moria, France) and who were followed for at least six months were included. They were divided into two groups: DLK and non-DLK, by diagnosis of DLK or its absence after LASIK. Postoperative logMAR visual acuities and logCS measured using the VCTSⓡ 6500 (Vistech Consultants, Inc., Dayton, OH) were compared with preoperative values in the DLK and non-DLK groups at three and six months after LASIK. Results: There was no difference in logMAR visual acuity between the DLK and non-DLK groups until the sixth postoperative month. However, CS was significantly decreased at 12 and 18 cycle/degree compared with preoperative values (p=0.043 and p=0.045, respectively) in the DLK group, whereas CS was significantly increased at 12 cycle/degree in the non-DLK group (p=0.042) at six months. Conclusions: DLK seemed to be strongly associated with a postoperative decrease of CS.

“Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards” refer to regulations developed to monitor the systemic process and conditions under which tests are planned, executed, examined, recorded and reported at testing laboratories. Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) seeks after international harmonization on GLP management and relevant testing methods among its member countries. The analysis report on the current status of Korea’s non clinical pharmaceutical industry and training would be greatly helpful in understanding the GLP situation of Korea. Therefore, this paper has presented the result of analysis conducted on the testing and training situations of 16 GLP laboratories in Korea.
