The aim of this study was to investigate the protective effects of ethanol (EAP) and acidic ethanol extracts (AEAP) of astringent persimmon fruits (Diospyros kaki) against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 epithelial cells. Levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced glutathione (GSH), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), as well as protein and DNA damage were measured. Treatment with H2O2 induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells but had no effect on SOD activity. Both EAP and AEAP protected the cells against oxidative damage and exhibited similar effects on cellular ROS scavenging activity and protein carbonyl levels. However, AEAP was more potent than EAP in normalizing CAT activity and cytosolic GSH level, and in protecting against DNA damage. These results demonstrated that astringent persimmon fruit extracts were biologically active, and that the tannin-rich fraction (AEAP) possesses stronger protective activity against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells.

In this study, garlic powder, tomato extract and a mixture of both were analyzed for anti-thrombotic effects using a collagen and epinephrine induced thrombosis model. Rats were randomly assigned to control, thrombosis induced control (COL/EP), garlic powder (G), tomato extract (T) and mixture of garlic powder and tomato extract (GT) groups. Test materials were administered for 7 days and thrombosis was induced by collagen and epinephrine injection. The results showed that G, T, and GT delayed activated partial thromboplastin time and reduced the expression of intracellular adhesion molecule-1 mRNA. Histological analysis of aorta and lung revealed that thrombosis was partially improved by G, T, and GT. Although there was no synergistic effect in GT compared to G and T treatment, this study showed that G, T, and GT have anti-thrombotic effect.

A complex of curcumin and lecithin developedto improve the solubility of curcumin, enhanced its chondroprotectiveeffect via an anti-inflammatory mechanism. In macrophage, proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumornecrosis factor (TNF)-a, interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-6, prostaglandinE2 (PGE2), and nitric oxide (NO) were quantified. In addition, the activity of nuclear factor (NF)-jB wasexamined. With chondrocytes, inflammatory mediatorswere assessed by measuring the secretion levels of IL-6,IL-8, and PGE2, also the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS). Metalloproteinases (MMPs), tissue inhibitor ofmetalloprotease (TIMP)-1, type II collagen (COL2), proteoglycan(PG), and hyaluronic acid (HA) were measuredwith respect to the articulation surface. The complex promotedthe anti-inflammatory effect by the inhibition ofinflammatory mediators. In addition, mRNA expressionlevels ameliorated. Furthermore, it was effective indecreasing extracellular secretion of polypeptides, alsocorresponding intracellular MMPs and TIMP-1. In conclusion,the complex may be developed as a functionalsupplement to maintain articulation health.

Persistence and degradation patterns of acequinocyl and its metabolite, hydroxyl-acequinocyl (acequinocyl-OH) and fenpyroximate in butterburs (Petasites japonicus Max.) were investigated after pesticide application. Butterburs, one of the minor crops in South Korea, was planted in two plots (plot A for double and plot B for single application) in a greenhouse. Butterburs samples were also planted in a separate plot without pesticide treatment, as the control. A commercial pesticide containing acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was applied to the foliage of butterburs at hourly intervals after dilution. Recoveries of acequinocyl and acequinocyl-OH were 78.6-84.7% and 83.7-95.5%, respectively; the relative standard deviation of the two compounds were less than 5%. The method limit of quantification was 0.01 mg/kg. The total (Ʃ) acequinocyl residues in butterburs reduced by 96.0% at 14 days and 75.9% at 7 days, in plot A and B, respectively, after final pesticide applications. The biological half-life (DT50) of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate, calculated using the dissipation rate, was 3.0 days and 4.0 days, respectively. These data were used to set up maximum residue and safe standard levels when the pesticides are applied to control pests during butterbur cultivation. Risk assessment results showed that the maximum % acceptable daily intake was 7.74% for Ʃ acequinocyl and 0.16% for Ʃ fenpyroximate. The theoretical maximum daily intake of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate was 26.3% and 35.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the concentrations of Ʃ acequinocyl and fenpyroximate in butterburs pose no significant health risks to Koreans.

Purpose : This study was conducted to determine the incidence, causative pathogens, risk factors and mortality for early onset sepsis in the first three days in very low birth weight infants. Methods : The medical records of 1,124 very low birth weight infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of Samsung Medical Center between November 1994 and December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. The incidence, causative pathogens, risk factors, and mortality for early onset sepsis in the first 3 days of life in very low birth weight infants were evaluated. Results : Early onset sepsis, as confirmed by positive blood cultures, was present in 17 of 1,124 infants (1.5%). Sixty-four percent of the isolated pathogens were gram-positive bacteria and 35% of the isolated pathogens were gram-negative bacteria. The dominant pathogens of early onset sepsis included Staphylococcus aureus (23.5%), Esherichia coli (23.5%), and Enterococcus (17.6%). Vaginal delivery (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 3.7; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.3-10.3; P=0.01) was associated with early onset sepsis. The overall mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.0; 95% CI, 1.4-6.5; adjusted P=0.0039) and mortality within 72 hours of life (adjusted hazard ratio, 6.5; 95% CI, 2.2-18.9; adjusted P=0.0005) of infants with early onset sepsis were higher than that of uninfected infants. Conclusion : Early onset sepsis remains an uncommon, but potentially lethal problem among very low birth weight infants. Knowledge of the likely causative organisms and risk factors for early onset sepsis can aid in instituting prompt and appropriate therapy, in order to minimize mortality.

세계 각국에서는 이주가 본격화되면서 국가 제도 밖에 남아있는 이주자 가족과 자녀 세대 문제 등이 공통적으로 제기되고 있음. 정확한 규모는 파악할 수 없으나 우리나라에도 미등록 체류 상태인 채로 본국에서 배우자가 들어오거나 국내에서 결혼해 아이를 낳아 키우면서 가족생활을 하고 있는 이들이 존재하고 있는 현실임. 이와 관련해 학교입학을 위한 법적 근거가 마련되는 등 정책적으로도 적잖은 성과가 있었으나 이것만으로는 당사자뿐 아니라 사회적 차원의 각종 문제를 예방할 수 없으며 이주아동과 이주여성 권리 보장, 사회통합 사각지대 발생 예방 차원에서 일정 수준 정책 보완이 필요함.
