Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

The temperature variations due to industrialization in Yangsan area are investigated using the 10 years(1980∼1989) temperature data and compared with those of Jinju. The major results are as follows: (1) The rates of increase of mean and minimum temperatures were more pronounced in Yangsan area than in Jinju area, and the increasing rates were always positive for every month. (2) There exists close correlation between the growth of population and increase of minimum temperature, and between the growth of population and the increase of mean temperature. Furtheromore, close correlations between the increase of those temperature and other industrial factors are also indentified.
Pd/ZrO_2계 촉매상에서 Ethylene, Cis-2-Butene Cyclohexene의 수소화 활성의 비교에 관한 연구

The hydrogenation of smaller alkenes, ethylene and cis-2-butene on dispersed palladium were studied in pressure range of 10-40 torr at temperatures between 251 and 283K. The amount of dispersed Pd on the ZrO_2 was varied from 0.03 to 2.1 weight percent. The reaction order with respect to hydrogen and ethylene pressure were showed to 0.78±0.02 and 0.66±0.02, respectively and the activation energy E_a, was estimated at 47±2kJ/mol. The kinetic parameters for cis-2-butene hydrogenation was similar to those values for hydrogenation reaction of ethylene. The deuterium distribution in ethylene and ethane molecules in the reaction with D_2 suggested in the hydrogenation on Pd/ZrO_2 proceeds via the associative mechanism; the slow step is assumed to be reaction of surface ethyl radical with the adsorbed hydrogen atom. The hydrogenation activity of those alkenes, V_g, per unit of weight of Pd dispersed on ZrO_2, exhibited same sharp maximum at 0.05wt%, but at this point, the turn-over frequency(N_t) value for ethylene increased drastically to be 65 times, larger than that for cyclohexene and, in the case of cis-2-butene, the value increased by a factor of 3 at 251 K. By comparing these resulting parameters for the reactions, it was concluded that the large differences in N_t were attributed to those in the densities of peculier active site-facet (210) and/or (100) planes-available for those reactions and the different steric-hindrance of reactants was supposed to contribute in producing these differences.

A new method of automatic recording raingauge is developed to measure rainfall with 0.01㎜ resolution. This use two different signals to measure rainfall more accurately compare than other raingauges. One is weight of the tipping bucket with rainfall amount and the other is pulse from tipping bucket reverse. New method applied 1 ㎜ tipping bucket mechanism and install loadcell under tipping bucket mechanism for measuring rainfall weight. Loadcell measure weight of rainfall until 1 ㎜ with 0.01 ㎜ resolution and more than 1 ㎜ than bucket reverse and pulse signal generate, after that loadcell measure weight again. The validation of new instrument was examined in the room 65 mm/hour rainfall rate total 53 ㎜ range. There is below than 1 % error of absolute rainfall amount and 0.01 ㎜ resolution. The field test of instrument was carried out by comparing its measured values with values recorded by weight type and standard type on June 1 2003 at Terrestrial Environmental Research Center at Tsukuba University in Tsukuba of Japan, when it has recorded total amount of 40.58 ㎜ rainfall by standard raingauge and new raingauge recorded 41.032 mm. Same rainfall intensity pattern observed in field observation with weight type raingauge. Rainfall intensity between weight type and Lee-A type raingauge reached 0.9947 correlation in 3 minute average.

Talc has been used as mineral drugs in the oriental medicine to cure catharsis, dysentery, dry breast, poor micturition, chronic indigestion, etc. according to the 'Donguebogam' which had been published by Heo Jun in 1613. In the book there is a description of 'talc from Chungju is of good quality'. To investigate the description geologically and oriental medically, talc from Dongyang Talc Mine in the Chungju area was analysed and compared with that of Oriental Medical Hospital of Kyungsan University, which has MgO 31.65%, CaO 0.73%, SiO_(2) 60.04%, ignition loss 6.4% close to those of pure talc containing MgO 31.7%, SiO_(2) 63.5%, H_(2)O 4.8%. However, talc from Dongyang Mine with MgO 31.8%, CaO 0.51% and SiO_(2) 61.0% is closer to pure talc and contains less impurities (Fe_(2)O_(3) 0.8%). Ca and Fe may add medical effects to talc drug as in the case of actinolite. Formula (3) logα_(Mg)^(2+) = 11.89 - 2pH and (4) logα_(Mg^(2+)/α^(2)_(H)^(+)) = 6.6 - 1.33 logα_(H4SiO4) may be used as basic data to predict and examine soluble contents of talc drug for medical experiments.

A new method of automatic evaporation measurement was tested at laboratory for the purpose of field observation. The results were as follows. 1) The measured evaporation values of water level showed the resolution of 0.023mm, and there was no problem for field observation. 2) There is no need of water temperature correction according to change of water density. 3) The voltage output of straingage loadcell make possible automatic recording by datalogger.

To predict reasonably the movement and the concentration of the pollutants in the coastal area. A simulation model should be prepared considering detail topography with land-sea and the urban effects, and the resolution near the source. The explicit method can not be applied due to the unstability of the numerical calculation in high horizontal-grid resolution, while the ADI scheme satisfied with the high horizontal grid resolution and can be used in the fine mesh system which shows the detail topography, atmospheric flow. The ADI method which studied the high horizonal grid resolution was excellent. The two dimentional model used in the study using ADI method is proved as a reasonable model to predict the wind field in any small scale area including mountainous coastal urban area.

The roots of panax ginseng was first extracted with hot chloroform followed by hot methanol. The major of the methanol extracts of ginseng was fractionated by column chromatography and was identified by thin layer chromatography and infrared spectrophotometrically. It was realized that the isolated of methanol extracts is saponins. The saponins was hydrolysed in methanolic-hydrochloric acid solution at 60℃ and during 50 minitues contineously. The aglycone portions after hydrolysis was also identified by infrared spectrogram. Further, Chromatograms of the methanol-water phase of the hydrolysates showed that th~re was glucose by qualitative analysis and was identified the same quantity of the each growing district by quantitative analysis. These results suggests that the methanol extract contains several saponins.
