        A Review on the Application of Nanotechnology in Food Processing and Packaging

        Currently, nanotechnology is widely applied in various industrial fields and is rapidly emerging as a promising future technology. In food industries, nanotechnology is used to enhance food quality and safety. Numerous cutting-edge studies on the advantages of nanotechnology have been conducted in the fields of food processing, food ingredients and additives, food packaging, and food engineering for optimal health. The market for these areas of research has grown steadily, and is expected to continue to do so. Because of this, R&D for nanotechnology that can be used effectively in food industries is being performed by several companies, as well as in academic research institutions around the world. This review describes the recent global R&D trends that have been in progress for two key areas: food processing and food packaging.

        외배엽 이형성증 환자의 임상적 치험례

        Ectodermal dysplasia(외배엽 이형성증)은 외배엽성 기관에 한가지 이상의 선천적 이상소견을 특징으로 하는 질환이다. Ectodermal dysplasia는 약 120종류 이상이 보고되고 있고, 이 중 Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia가 가장 잘 알려져 있으며 이는 성염색체 열성인자에 의해 유전되며 남성에서 호발한다고 한다. 임상증상으로는 무한증, 감모증, 무치증 혹은 핍지증이 가장 특징적이다. 이외에도 무피지증, 손톱이형성증, 가늘고 성긴 머리카락, 두드러진 이마, 안장코, 돌출된 안와상부, 입술의 돌출과 함께 피부가 건조하고 땀샘이 결핍되어 있어서 더위를 참지 못하고 발열이 일어나기 쉽다. 본 증례의 환자는 단국대학교 치과병원 소아치과에 내원한 6세 6개월된 남아로써 무치증을 보이는 Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia로 진단되었고 환자의 심미적, 기능적 결함을 해소하기 위해 총의치로 치료를 시행하는 동안 다소의 지견을 얻어 이를 보고하는 바이다. 주요어 : 외배엽 이형성증, 무치증, 총의치

        응급실을 통한 정신과 입원환자에 대한 임상적 고찰

        Hospital records of 127 neuropsychiatric patients admitted to Seoul Paik Hospital via the E.R. from January 1, 1984 to December 31, 1986 were reviewed, and the following results were obtained. 1) Patients admitted via the E.R. comprised 22.8% of total neuropsychiatric admissions. 2) The readmission rate of patients via E.R. was 36.2%, that of the patients admitted via the O.P.D. was 22.7% 3) The average duration of hospitalization of neuropsychiatric pateints admitted via the E.R. was 36 days that of the patients admitted via the O.P.D. was 48.3 days. 4) 32.3% of the E.R. admission patients were in their twenties ; 55.9% of them were in their twenties or thirties. Male for female ratio was 1.15 : 1 5) 22.8% of the E.R. patients were diagnosed as schizophrenic disorder ; which was the most frequent diagnosis in all patients. 6) 34.6% of the E.R. patients were discharged within 2 weeks, and 60.6%, within 1 month. 7) Presenting problems, in the order of frequency, were paralysis of numbness of extremities, somatic sysmptoms, hallucination of paranoid delusion, and anxiety or panic state. More than half of the patients presented one or more of these symptoms. 8) 36.2% of the E.R. patients were discharged against medical advice. This was higher than A.M.A. discharge rate of 26.7% of the patients admitted via the O.P.D.

        씨름선수에서 체중 감량과 회복기의 Leptin과 PAI-1 변화

        Obesity which is defined as accumulation of excess body fat, is central factor of insulin resistance syndrome. Recently, it is revealed tat adipose tissue is not simply an energy storage organ but it also secretes a variety of molecules which affect the metabolism of the whole body, those are leptin and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1(PAI-1). Therefore, leptin and PAI-1 are increased in the obese state. Leptin regulates energy homeostasis and satiety and PAI-1 regulates fibrinolytic system. For these reasons, elevated levels of leptin and PAI-1 are considered as link factors between obesity and insulin resistance syndrome. However, the exact regulating mechanism for serum levels of leptin and PAI-1 is not fully understood yet. In this study, to evaluate the regulating mechanisms of serum levels of leptin and PAI-1 according to the weight changes, we measured leptin, PAI-1, physical, metabolic, and endocrine parameters during 10 days of weight reduction and 10 days of regain period in 7 young athletes. The mean body weight change was -4.7 kg(5.0%) in the weight reduction period and -2.4 kg(2.5%) in the weight regain period compared to baseline value. Baseline level of leptin in athletes was 1.7±0.66 ng/ml, which was significantly correlated with body weight, BMI, percent body fat, body fat mass, triglyceride, insulin, and PAI-1. Baseline level of PAI-1 in athletes was 16.6±5.26 ng/ml, which was significantly correlated with body weight, BMI, triglyceride, insulin, and leptin. Leptin was decreased to 0.7±0.39(44% of the basaline value) in the weight reduction period, and increased to 1.9±0.64(119% of the baseline value) in the regain period. PAI-1 was decreased to 7.4±2.72(44% of the basaline value) in the weight reduction period, and increased to 22.8±7.33(138% of the baseline value) in the regain period. The changes of leptin during weight reduction period were significantly correlated with the changes of insulin(r=0.890, P<0.01) and triglycerides(r=0.874, P<0.01). The changes of PAI-1 during weight reduction period were significantly correlated with the changes of FFA(r=0.889, P<0.01) and triglycerides(r=0.869, P<0.05). The changes of both leptin and AAI-1 during weight regain period were significantly correlated with the changes of insulin(r=0.755 and 0.849, P<0.05, respectively). In summary, these results suggest that serum levels of leptin and PAI-1 were affected by weight cycling, the percentages of change were more greater than that of weight change, and rebound phenomena were occurred during weight regain period.

        충남대학교 학술림 산책로 훼손실태 및 관리방안에 관한 연구

        This study concentrates an the trail of the CNU(Chungnam National University) forest. The amount of use and the pattern of damage are considered, as well as the extent of environmental damage. Finally, some managerial strategies are proposed in connection with sustainable maintenance. The trail of the university forest is composed of three sections; one is the neighborhood park and the Institute of Information Technology/Communications, the second is the Institute of Information Technology/Communications and the Dormitory, and the third section is the Dormitory and the Foreign prof's Apt. The total length of the trail is 2.6km. The daily amount of use is 1,269 visitors per day. The amount of using increased three times the amount of that in 1998. This study shows the pattern of damage of the trail in the order of root-exposure, widening, rock-exposure, deepening and the divergence in the frequency of occurrence of all these factors. Environmental damage is also graded thus: grade 3 is 27.4m, grade 4 is 0.8m, grade 5 is 1.5m, and grade 6 is 0.2m. Accordingly, some managerial strategies were proposed in connection with the sustainable trail maintenance.

      • Ether-free polymeric anion exchange materials with extremely low vanadium ion permeability and outstanding cell performance for vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) application

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ether-free poly(<I>p</I>-phenylene)-based anion exchange membrane materials with outstanding vanadium ion blocking properties are reported. The synthesized ionomers with a rigid backbone structure show small dimensional variations despite the high ion exchange capacities. Among the synthesized membranes, the QPPP-2 membrane with ion exchange capacity of 2.1 meq·g<SUP>−1</SUP> exhibits high anion (OH<SUP>−</SUP>, SO<SUB>4</SUB> <SUP>2−</SUP>, and Cl<SUP>−</SUP>) conductivity. The QPPP-2 membrane shows an extremely low diffusion coefficient (2.12 × 10<SUP>−9</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>) for VO<SUP>2+</SUP>, which is much lower than that of Nafion 115 (2.88 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP> cm<SUP>2</SUP> min<SUP>−1</SUP>), indicating the vanadium ion blocking property of QPPP-2. Moreover, the chemical and operational stabilities of the membranes are investigated <I>via</I> ex situ soaking tests in 0.1 M VO<SUB>2</SUB> <SUP>+</SUP> solution and in situ operation tests for 100 cycles, respectively. The vanadium redox flow battery single cell assembled with the QPPP-2 membrane exhibits a coulombic efficiency of 99%, voltage efficiency of 87%, and energy efficiency of 86% during 100 cycles at 80 mA cm<SUP>−2</SUP>.         Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.
