Study on the Focusing Position Effects in a Diode End-pumped Nd:YAG Laser

A multi-kHz high-repetition-rate laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser was developed, and its lasing properties were demonstrated for laser optimization. The dependence of the output power on the pump beam’s focusing position in the Nd:YAG crystal was determined. The optimum focusing position of the pump beam for efficient extraction of the diode’s pump energy was confirmed to be 1 mm inside the laser crystal from the surface of the Nd:YAG. This focusing position is independent of the length of the laser crystal. The beam quality factor, M2, was decreased from values of 2.8 ∽ 2.9 to less than 1.3 in both the CW and the pulsed modes by insertion of a 500 ∽ 600 µm aperture inside the laser cavity. In second harmonic generation (SHG), we found that the output power and the pulse width were very sensitive to the LBO operating temperature. We confirmed that controlling the LBO crystal’s temperature was very important for efficient and stable operation of the 532 nm laser.
