Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

Talc has been used as mineral drugs in the oriental medicine to cure catharsis, dysentery, dry breast, poor micturition, chronic indigestion, etc. according to the 'Donguebogam' which had been published by Heo Jun in 1613. In the book there is a description of 'talc from Chungju is of good quality'. To investigate the description geologically and oriental medically, talc from Dongyang Talc Mine in the Chungju area was analysed and compared with that of Oriental Medical Hospital of Kyungsan University, which has MgO 31.65%, CaO 0.73%, SiO_(2) 60.04%, ignition loss 6.4% close to those of pure talc containing MgO 31.7%, SiO_(2) 63.5%, H_(2)O 4.8%. However, talc from Dongyang Mine with MgO 31.8%, CaO 0.51% and SiO_(2) 61.0% is closer to pure talc and contains less impurities (Fe_(2)O_(3) 0.8%). Ca and Fe may add medical effects to talc drug as in the case of actinolite. Formula (3) logα_(Mg)^(2+) = 11.89 - 2pH and (4) logα_(Mg^(2+)/α^(2)_(H)^(+)) = 6.6 - 1.33 logα_(H4SiO4) may be used as basic data to predict and examine soluble contents of talc drug for medical experiments.

A new method of automatic evaporation measurement was tested at laboratory for the purpose of field observation. The results were as follows. 1) The measured evaporation values of water level showed the resolution of 0.023mm, and there was no problem for field observation. 2) There is no need of water temperature correction according to change of water density. 3) The voltage output of straingage loadcell make possible automatic recording by datalogger.

A new method of air pollution monitoring system was developed and tested for two months at Catholic University of Taegu-Hyosung. The system consists of CCD camera, camera controller and personal computer. The personal computer caputured CCD camera images every 10 minutes and recorded them in hard disk drive. During observation period there were no problems to the nomitoring system, and visibility was more easily interpreted by image processing. The merits of this new monitoring system were reliable observation of visibility and the attractive price of the system.

Acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6 단위체는 '4-hydroxymethyl benzo-18-crown-6와 acryloyl chloride을 반응시켜 합성하였다. Poly(acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6)는 벤젠용매하에서 AIBN을 개시제로하여 제조하였다. [0.001mole/L M(NO_3)_n(M^2+ =Na^+, Mg^2+, Ca^2+, Sr^2+, Ba^2+, Zn^2+, Cu^2+, Cd^2+, Mn^n+ 와 Pb^2+)]를 포함한 source phase와 거대고리 리간드 [acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6와 poly(acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6)]와 계면활성제 Span 80을 포함한 toluene 막 그리고 Li_4P_2O_7를 포함하는 receiving phase로 구성되어진 에멀젼 액체막계에서 source phase로 부터 금속이온들의 소멸속도를 연구하였다. 금속이온의 이동에 관한 실험에서, 각 혼합물로 부터 Pb^2+ 이온이 가장 높은 이동율을 나타내었다. Acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6 was synthesized by reacting 4'-hydroxymethyl benzo-18-crown-6 with acryloyl chloride. Poly(acryolyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6) was prepared in benzene by using AIBN as an initiator. The disapperance of metal ions from source phase as a function of time was studied in emulsion liquid membrane systems comprised in an aqueous source phase [0.001mole/L M(NO_3)_n(M^n+ =Na^+, Mg^2+, Ca^2+, Sr^2+, Ba^2+, Zn^2+, Cu^2+, Cd^2+, Mn^2+ 와 Pb^2+)], a toluene membrane containing of the macrocyclic ligand[acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6 and poly(acryloyl methyl benzo-18-crown-6)] and the surfactant Span 80, and an aqueous Li_4P_2O_7 receiving phase. In the experiment for metal ions transport using this emulsioning liquid membrane, the Pb^2+ ion transport was more higher than other metal ions.

A new evaporatin recording instrument was developed and the new instrument was tested at Suwon meteorological observation station for 9 days of August, 1997. The results were as follows. 1. The new insument had no problems for regular mmeteorological observation because of high resolution of water level and small amount of error during observation period. 2. In rainy and windy days, more errors were observed by reason of the disturbance of water level. 3. The resolution of new instrument showed 0.01mm of water level at field observation. It is the most hightest resolution of water level instruments.

To predict reasonably the movement and the concentration of the pollutants in the coastal area. A simulation model should be prepared considering detail topography with land-sea and the urban effects, and the resolution near the source. The explicit method can not be applied due to the unstability of the numerical calculation in high horizontal-grid resolution, while the ADI scheme satisfied with the high horizontal grid resolution and can be used in the fine mesh system which shows the detail topography, atmospheric flow. The ADI method which studied the high horizonal grid resolution was excellent. The two dimentional model used in the study using ADI method is proved as a reasonable model to predict the wind field in any small scale area including mountainous coastal urban area.

Asymmetric hydrogenation of methyl acetoacetate(MAA) or methyl 2, 2,-dimethyl acetoacetate (DMAA) on the Ds-( + )- Tartaric acid modified Ni/TiOz were carried out by using a closed circulation system at temperature between 323 and 348 K. The kinetic parameters for asymmetric hydrogenation were obtained in the reaction order with respect to the MAA(or DMAA) and hydrogen pressure were, respectively, 1 and 0, the apparent activation energy for both asymhydrogenation was 26.8±2 kJ/mol. From the results of thus kinetic parameters and the exchange reaction with deutrium, this was satisfactorily explained by asumming the Langmuir-Hinshelwood type mechanism for the reaction, where MAA(or DMAA) and hydrogen were adsorbed competitively on same site. Under thus reaction condition, the rate determing step was concluded to be reaction atom of ft-carbonyl group in substrate with adsorbed hydrogen atom. On the basis of observed data, the effect of adsorption structure controlled by Enol-Type on the catalyst surface was discussed.
