Background: The number of elderly patients with end-stage kidney disease has been increasing, but the outcomes of kidney transplants (KT) remain poorly understood in elderly patients. Therefore, we evaluated the clinical outcomes of elderly KT recipients and analyzed the impact of elderly donors. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent KT between 2000 and 2019. KT recipients were divided into four groups according to a combination of recipient and donor age (≥60 or <60 years); elderly recipients: old-to-old (n = 46) and young-to-old (n = 83); young recipients: old-to-young (n = 98) and young-to-young (n = 796). We compared the risks of mortality, graft failure, and acute rejection between groups using Cox regression analysis. Results: The incidence of delayed graft function, graft failure, and acute rejection was not different among groups. Annual mean tacrolimus trough level was not lower in elderly recipients than young recipients during 10-year follow-up. Mortality was significantly higher in elderly recipients (p = 0.001), particularly infection-related mortality (p < 0.001). In multivariable Cox regression analysis, old-toold and young-to-old groups had increased risk of mortality (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 2.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14– 7.32; p = 0.03; aHR, 3.06; 95% CI, 1.51–6.20; p = 0.002). However, graft failure and acute rejection risks were not increased in elderly recipients. Conclusion: In elderly recipients, graft survival and acute rejection-free survival were not inferior to those of young recipients. However, mortality, especially risk of infection-related death, was increased in elderly recipients. Thus, low immunosuppression intensity might help decrease mortality in elderly recipients.

미치광이풀 모상근 배양에서 Tropane Alkaloid 생산성 증진을 위한 최적 생물학적 엘리시터 선발

Scopolamine and hyoscyamine which belong to tropane alkaloids are the pharmaceutically valuable anticholinergic drugs. In order to increase the productivities, the effects of elicitation were investigated during hairy root cultures of Scopolia parviflora. Biotic elicitors originated from 3 fungi and 1 yeast were prepared as homogenate and supernatant and added to 3-week-old cultures. Both of homogenate and supernatant of Candida albicans elicitors increased the scopolamine production. The production of hyoscyamine was enhanced by homogenate of Fusarium solani and supematant of C. albicans. Most of the other fungal elicitors were also improved on the tropane alkaloid production compared to non-treatment. Among the elicitors tested, C. albicans was proved the optimal biotic elicitor on tropane alkaloids production. These results will be served mass production of tropane alkaloids by large-scale production.

Costume plays have been of interest to young people in the recent years. The much increased interest in costume plays has prompted many researchers to verify the behavior characteristics of costume players Despite the importance of the costume play, there has been no systematic study of it. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the influence of life style on behavior characteristics of the costume player. The subjects of this study were members of the web sits(wwwcosmakercom). A total of 155 subjects responded to the questionnaires and the 143 responses were used for further data analysis. The data was analyzed by factor analysis, cluster analysis, and one-way ANOVA. These were the results of the stud: First, costume player groups are classified into three sub-dimensions: other people-oriented, show-off oriented, and exclusive ego oriented. Second, the behavior characteristics of costume player are significantly shown among those groups.
Pseudomonas putida SM25에서의 catBC 유전자의 발현과 catBCA Operon의 Promoter 부위 분석

catBCA operon은 catechol로 부터 β-ketoadipate enol-lactone까지 ortho-경로로 분해되는 효소들을 암호하고 있으며, 이들 유전자들은 서로 연관된 전사 조절을 받고 있다. Pseudomonas putida SM25의 염색체로 DHA로 부터 catBCA promoter부위를 pRS415a에 클로닝하여 재조합 plasmid인 pRSB1을 제조하였다. 이 promoter의 작동을 lacZ의 reporter gene인 β-galactosidase의 활성으로 그 발현을 측정하였으며, 그 결과 Escherichia coli내에서의 promoter의 작동은 promoter가 없는 경우의 세표에서 보다 그 활성이 약 10배 높게 나타났다. S1 mapping으로 조사한 결과 catBCA promoter부위는 catB의 번역 개시코돈으로부터 약 45bp upstream부위에 전사개시 부위가 있는 것으로 추정된다. catBC promoter의 작동에 의한 mRNA의 발현은 RT-PCR을 이용하여 간접적으로 조사한 결과, cis, cis-muconate로 유도한 경우 mRNA발현은 현저하게 높게 나타내었으며, P. putida cell에서의 발현이 E. coli cell내에서 보다 높게 나타났다. catBCA genes are encoded for the dissimilation of catechol to β-ketoadipate enol-lactone by ortho-pathway and are regulated under corrdinate transcription regulation. Promoter region of catBCA operon was inserted into a promoter probe vector, pRS415a with lacZ gene, constructing recombinant plasmid pRSB1 carrying pRS415a-catBCA promoter in order to analyze expression from the catBC promoter. The transcription level of pRSB1 was increased 10 fold higher than that of pRS415a. The in vivo transcription initiation site of the catBCA operon was determined by S1 nuclease protection analysis, indicating that it was located on about 45bp upstream from the initiation codon of the translation. Transcription level of the catBCA operon in Pseudomonas putida SM25 was analyzed by RT-PCR indirectly. mRNA of catBC genes was synthesized in both the cells of P.putida PPO200-2 and Escherichia coli NovaBlue under the control of the promoter with induction of cis, cis-muconate.
Inducing apoptpsis by the inhibition of c-myb in oral squamous carcinoma cell line, KB cell

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most commonmalignancy and is a major cause of worldwide cancer mortality.The proto-oncogene c-myb plays an important role in regulationof cell growth and differentiation, and it is expressed at highlevels in hematopoietic cells and many other types of cancers.However, the function of c-myb is not well known in OSCC.The present study aimed to reveal the function of c-myb and totest the alternation of cell growth and signaling by c-myb inOSCC. In this study, c-myb and dominant-negatibe myb(DN-myb) were expressed in an adenovirus-mediated gene deliverysystem to KB cells. The over-expressed c-myb broughtincreased cellular proliferation compared with control cells.However, DN-myb infected KB cells showed significantreduction of cell growth and enhanced induction of apoptosis toactivate PARP and caspase 9. c-myb induced increase of IGF-I,-II and IGF-IR expressions while DN-myb down-regulatedthese expression. Activation of ERK and Akt/PKB pathwaywas shown only in c-myb transduced cells. These findingssuggest that the role of c-myb in cell growth of oral cancer cellsis partially mediated through the modulation of IGFs, ERK andAkt/PKB. From this results, DN-myb is strongly recommendedas a curable gene for the treatment of c-myb dependentmalignancies such as OSCC.
뇌사환자의 갑상선 기능, 전신대사 및 중증도에 관한 연구

Background and Objectives : Brain death may lead to hormonal depletion, metabolic derangement and multiple organ dysfunction. We have carried out present study to examine the effects of brain death on the thyroid function, metabolic indices, and the severity scoring systems. Methods : 13 adults patients admitted for organ donation or brain death evaluation were examined after brain death was confirmed. Thyroid hormones measured were .thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and free thyroxine (FT4). The metabolic indices measured were arterial ketone body ratio (AKBR), lactic acid (LA), and base defiat (BD). as for reference to the severity scoring systems, APACHE Ⅲ and multiple organ failure score (MOFS) were assessed on the day of brain death confirmation. Arterial blood was drawn for all measurements. Results : As for the thyroid function, there were significant decreases in T3 (40.48±20.96 ng/dL) and T4 (3.47±2.15 ㎍/dL), but no significant change in FT4 (0.75±0.31 ng/dL) and TSH (1.12±1.37 uIU/mL) compared to the normal range. Significant decreases in AKBR (0.39±0.31) and BD (-9.46±5.83 m㏖/L), and significant increase in LA (2.57±2.46 m㏖/L) In metabolic indices, were shown, as for severity scoring systems, APACHE Ⅲ score (101.54±19.41) and MOF score (9.11±2.57) indicated a high mortality. There were significant correlation between thyroid hormones (r=0.565 -0.781) but no correlation among other indices. Also, significant inverse correlations were shown between base deficit and lactic acid (r=-0.660), APACHE Ⅲ score (r=-0.726) and MOF score (r=-0.604). The highest correlation was observed between APACHE Ⅲ score and MOF score (r=0.851). Conclusions : As for the thyroid function, significant decrease in T3 and T4, and almost normal range of FT4 and TSH imply the euthyroid sick syndrome. Abnormal finding of the metabolic parameters indicates an inhibition of the aerobic metabolic rate of the body as a whole. And the severity scoring parameters are compatible with high mortality.

A 2.5㎏, 11-year old, intact female mixed breed dog with 1 year history of sporadic seizure was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. There were no significant finding in CBC and serum chemistry. Based on X-ray, CT scan and MRI, it was diagnosed as syringohydromyelia and hydrocephalus caused by Chiari-like mlaformation. Prednisolone, furosemide and phenobarbital was administered orally. Depend on the number and severity of seizure, the dose of phenobarbital was adjusted. Seizure episode was reduced.
