        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

        Background and Objectives : Cigarette smoking is a major factor and the most modifiable risk factor for atherosclerosis. Endothelial dysfunction is an early event in atherosclerosis, before the structural change of the systemic arteries. We hypothesized that endothelial dysfunction might be present in the systemic arteries of young adult smokers and that this might be dose-dependent phenomenon. Therefore, we try to certify that smoking is associated with endothelial dysfunction in healthy young adults without other risk factor of atherosclerosis. Subjects and Methods : we studied noninvasively 29 subjects aged 3 to 4 decades without other risk factor of atherosclerosis, they were composed of the two groups, current smokers(n=15) and nonsmokers(n=14). Smoking history varied from 3 to 20 pack years. Using high-resolution ultrasound, vessel diameter and mean flow rate were measured at rest, during reactive hyperemia(with flow-mediated endothelium-dependent dilation), and after sublingual nitroglycerin(NG-induced endothelium-independent vasodilation). Result : Flow mediated endothelium dependent dilation was observed in the control subjects (9.4±3.44%) but was impaired in the smokers(5.8±2.51%)(p=0.004). NG-induced endothelium independent dilation is no difference in all subjects. Conclusion : Cigarette smoking is associated with endothelial dysfunction in healthy young adults.

        Jagyeungnoo, 'The Self Time Announcing Clepsydra', used as the national standard clock system from the first day of July in 1434 was invented by Jang Yeong-sil under the royal command of King Sejong in 1433. It was famous for its elaborated time announcing mechanism and its time keeping accuracy from the beginning. However this original system was destroyed during Japanese invasion started 1592. At present day only a few parts of rebuilt one in 1536 in King Jungjong's era were survived and later assigned as the National Treasure # 229. These remains are two cylindrical time measuring vessels with a dragon sculptured on the outer surface and a few relic parts associated with this system. Recently the Jagyeongnoo restoration project was conducted by National Palace Museum and Konkuk University. The whole restoration procedure followed along the written record Borukaki in King Sejong's Veritable Record, i.e, Sejong Silok and relics survived from 1536 system. This series of papers are associated with Jagyeungoo restoration project since the written record was delicate and sometime need engineering explanation. The first part of this series is about detailed reproduction processes of the water vessels of Jagyeungnoo system. This includes measuring dimensions of relics and casting process of the vessels.

      • 잔자갈 充塡 浸漬濾床의 設計에 관한 硏究

        The design methology for the submerged biological filter packed with gravels was studied according to the treatment characteristics of the wastewater by the filter, and obtained results are as follows; l.The Suitable gravel sizes to be packed in the filter is about 11㎜ in diameters. 2.The optimal circulation ratio of the treated wastewater is about 20. 3.The relationahip of the BOD remoral ratio(r) versus BOD volumetric loading (Lv) is as folowing equation. r(%) = 100 - K Lv where, K is a constant for the treatment conditions of the filter. 4.Making use of the Lv value of the above equation, the filter volume can be designed. 5.The aeration facilitions are designable by equating oxygen requirement of the biological filter to the oxygenation capacity of aeration facilities. 6.The rational design of whole filter system can be achieved by the reasonable design of each filter details, layout of filters and accompning facilities such as pipelines, pumps and blowers etc..

      • 초고진공 장치의 설계 및 제작과 LEED Optics에 의한 Auger Electron Spectrometer의 분해능 측정

        A multipurpose Ultra High Vacuum chamber was designed and constructed in this laboratory. This enables us to be equipped with various analytical instruments such as Ar-ion gun LEED optics, Electron analyzer, and Quadrupole mass spectrometer etc. The 4-Grid LEED optics, a product of Omicron company in West Germany, was equipped with the UHV chamber and the LEED power supply was designed by this group. Turbo-C language figured out Auger spectra of the ad-species by means of the computer interface. The resolution of Auger electron spectrometer was measured with a constant primary electron beam energy. The results showed that the resolution was independent of the primary electron beam energy, but depends on the modulation voltage. Also, it was revealed that the resolution of 4-Grid optics was more improved than that of 3-Grid optics.

      • Ar 이온에 의해 Sputtering된 Pt(111) 표면의 NO 흡착

        Adsorption of nitric oxide on the Pt(111) surface sputtered by Ar-ion has been studied using thermal desorption spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, and low energy electron diffraction. A thermal desorption spectrum obtained from the perfect Pt(111) saturated with NO at 300K is quite simillar to those reported previously. The main portion desorbs at about 370K(α-state) with a shoulder at about 470K(β-state). The chemisorption of nitric oxide is predominantly molecular on the Pt(111) surface, accompanied by a small amount of dissociation which becomes negligible when the Pt(111) surface is perfect. When the Pt(111) surface is sputtered by Ar-ion with 2KeV, the thermal desorption spectrum becomes quite complex. The shoulder peak, which appears on the perfect surface spectrum, increases with Ar-ion sputtering time. The maximum desorption spectra of N₂ and N₂O are observed simultaneously between 470 and 600K. The desorption mechanisms for N₂O are proposed. The increasing N₂ with the β-state of NO indicates that the β-state is a precursor to the NO dissociation.

        열공성 뇌경색과 뇌내출혈의 위험인자 비교

        Cerebral small vessel disease is the most important cause of lacunar infarction (LI) and intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). It is generally postulated that, in its early stages, the vascular lesion engenders vessel wall fragility and ICH. But if rupture dose not occur, segmental vessel occlusion evolves, producing LI. It may be a common aging phenomenon that is exacerbated by hypertension and diabetes mellitus. This study was performed to evaluate risk factors of LI and ICH. We reviewed retrospectively the medical records of 690 patients (254 LI, 436 ICH) with stroke who were admitted to Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center from January 1995 to December 1998. The major risk factors including age, sex, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and several minor risk factors were analyzed in these patients. Older age (p<0.01), male sex(p<0.01), hypertension with treatment(p<0.01), hypertension with long duration(p<0.01) and hypertriglyceridemia(p<0.01), cigarette smoking(p<0.01) were significantly more frequent in LI. Younger age(p<0.01), female sex(p<0.01) and hypertension without treatment(p<0.01), hypertension with short duration(p<0.01) were more frequent in ICH. The prevalence, duration and treatment of diabetes mellitus were not different between these two groups. This study show that the age, sex, treatment of hypertension, duration of hypertension and cigarette smoking seem to be significant risk factors between LI and ICH.

        This is the second part of the paper series about Jagyeungnoo, 'The Self Time Announcing Clepsydra', restoration project. The content of the second part is about the constant flow rate keeping system to the time measuring vessels. This system consists of three vessels. They are reservoir, compensating, and regulating vessels. In Jagyeungnoo system overflow mechanism was adopted to achieve constant flow rate regardless inflow rate variations. Through extensive parametric and experimental study based on extensive trial-error based on the mathematical model, optimal values of two parameters, i.e, initial height of regulating vessel and the diameter of the pipe exit orifice were determined and discussed improving method of accuracy. For the application of this result to Jagyeungnoo system, the eleven 24 solar seasonal time-ruler and its floating accessories were restored based upon Nujutongui, i.e. Clepsydra Operation Manual published in King Sejong's era.

        In 1970's, a modern industrilization in Jeonbuk has been remarkably developed in the basis of ExportEnter-prise, aparted from the past various vulnerability, in addition to this, the authorities concerned have developed the Jeonbuk province into a positive industrial inclination, pursued after the Ho-Nam High way opening to traffic in the begining of 1970's. It has been expected for us to be Promising the hoped-for 1980's, because of not only turning the three city, that is, Jeonju, si and Kunsan into a development zone which can be a linking industrial belt but also enlarging the quadric street, Bun Yung into the biquadratic traffic road. We, herewith, have to grope the development industrial zone for promoting export project in Jeonbuk Province, under the basis of Export Orieoted System in 1980's. Judging such a thing from the foregoing view-point, I will name, in this preface, the complemental main-factor one by one as follows, except the general condition referred in the main discourse. 〈Promotive Guidance〉 ⓐ Utilizing the outer & inner information given by and overseas market movement groped for 〈example〉 Foreign marketing movement illustration meeting, Overseas superior goods display etc. ⓑ Improvement of the design and packing 〈example〉 Industrial design exposition, Display of the export commodity compared with ⓒ Enlargement of the administrative education for the Foreign Trade Practice. 〈Bringing up Scheme〉 ① Large-unit of the industrial factory belt. ② Modernization of the industrial facility. ③ Inducement plan of the foreign investor and drastic technical induction. ④ Making a industrial strategy and forming a relative industry to be induced 〈example〉 Establishment of the inter-related plant etc. ⑤ Backing up the positive government subsidy and inducing the public investment organization. Viewed with the said-point, we dare say that Jeonbuk, export-oriented local society, will go directly toward the Export Tower of Ivory of the 20000million dollor in the hoped-for year, 1980's, added with this, we will set our eyes on the second and third in dustrial block, width of 300 myriad pyong in Kunsan, the second its block, width of the 50 myriad in Jeonju and the same block invested 8700 million won in lrilocalty. Following this, administrative government will input the money, 80000 million won to the coastal industrial zone, the second & third block becoming a heavy chemical industry base. Viewed with this, it goes without saying that Jeonbuk industrialized development condition is will favorable, compared with the other province, as to the locational condition, for example, the low price of the land base, an unrestricted supply of the industrial water and a smooth transport means through land and sea etc, those mentioned above exactly have been proved to be true. Through the establishment of a full industrial base in 1970's, Jeonbuk Local society will be transformed into the heavy chemical industrialization from the Light Industry in 1980's.
