      • Carbon reduction and planning strategies for urban parks in Seoul

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study quantified carbon storage and uptake for urban parks in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea. A total of 38 study parks were selected using a systematic random sampling method and all the trees in the parks were field-inventoried. Carbon storage and uptake by the park trees were estimated applying a quantitative model for urban open-grown trees of each species. Mean carbon storage per unit of park area, basal area, and crown cover by the trees was 38.5 ± 3.0 t/ha, 27.3 ± 0.8 kg/100 cm<SUP>2</SUP>, and 7.4 ± 0.4 kg/m<SUP>2</SUP>, respectively. Annual carbon uptake per unit area and cover by the trees averaged 3.5 ± 0.2 t/ha/yr, 2.5 ± 0.1 kg/100 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/yr, and 0.7 ± 0.0 kg/m<SUP>2</SUP>/yr, respectively. The major determinants of the levels of carbon storage and uptake were species, density, sizes, and layering structures of the planted trees. The trees across all urban parks in Seoul were estimated to store 222.3 kt of carbon and to annually sequester 20.2 kt of carbon. The trees in these parks played an important role in annually offsetting carbon emissions from gasoline consumption by approximately 2.3% of the total population of the city. The economic value of the annual carbon uptake, which was $7.1million/yr, equaled 15.1% of the annual maintenance budget of the parks in the city. However, the role of study parks as a source of carbon uptake was limited due to the distribution of large grass and impervious areas, the single-layered structures, and the dominance of small trees. Planning strategies were explored to enhance carbon reduction effects of the parks. They included the expansion of tree planting spaces through the minimization of unnecessary grass and paving areas, the active tree planting in the potential planting spaces, the multi-layered planting grouped with larger trees, and the planting of tree species having satisfactory growth rates. This study puts an emphasis on finding out the present carbon offset levels of urban parks on which information is limited and suggesting a future direction of park planning based on a detailed actual survey.</P>

Go to: Abstract Background This study explored the relationship between integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)-based anti-retroviral agents and weight gain over time, and the risk factors for weight gain in Korean people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH). Materials and Methods The study was conducted retrospectively in PLWHs 18 years of age or older who took one of three INSTI-based single-tablet regimens (STRs) (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine/elvitegravir/cobicistat [TDF/F/EVG/c], tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine/elvitegravir/cobicistat [TAF/F/EVG/c], and abacavir/lamivudine/dolutegravir [ABC/3TC/DTG]) for more than 2 years at three university-affiliated hospitals in South Korea from May 2014 to December 2020. Analysis was performed in the treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced groups, respectively. Results Individual INSTI-based STRs were associated with weight gain at the 24-month follow up in both treatment-naïve (n = 179) and treatment-experienced (n = 290) groups. Body mass index (BMI) categories changed over time for TAF/F/EVG/c and ABC/3TC/DTG, with significant increases in the rates of overweight and obesity in treatment-naïve patients, whereas there was no change for TDF/F/EVG/c. TAF/F/EVG/c significantly increased total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) compared to other regimens over 24 months. In the treatment-naïve group, a baseline CD4+ T cell count <100 cells/mm3, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral load (VL) ≥100,000 copies/mL, no physical exercise, and TAF/F/EVG/c (vs. TDF/F/EVF/c) were risk factors for ≥10% weight gain. In the treatment-experienced group, age <45 years, BMI <25 kg/m2, and no physical exercise were risk factors for ≥5% weight gain. Conclusion INSTI-based STR continued to increase body weight at the 24-month follow up in treated and untreated Korean PLWH. Exercise, together with demographic-, HIV-, and anti-retroviral therapy-related factors, influenced weight gain. Therefore, when prescribing an INSTI-based STR, weight gain and metabolic changes should be closely monitored in PLWH with these risk factors.         Bryophyte flora of Taebaeksan Mountain National Park in Korea

        We investigated the bryophyte flora of Taebaeksan Mountain National Park in Korea by conducting a total of ten field surveys from April of 2017 to October of 2019 at various mountainous sites in the park. During the surveys, we recorded 274 taxa belonging to 68 families, 143 genera, 267 species, 3 subspecies, and 4 varieties. Among these, 92 species were reported as new to the flora of the Taebaeksan Mountains. A checklist based on a study of 990 specimens is provided as well. The most remarkable species were Sphagnum capillifolium (Ehrh.) Hedw, Sphagnum girgensohnii Russow, Buxbaumia punctata P.-C. Chen et X.-J. Li, Pleuroziopsis ruthenica (Weinm.) Kindb., Ptilium crista-castrensis (Hedw.) De Not., and Douinia plicata (Lindb.) Konstant. et Vilnet.

        홍삼류의 섭취가 비만과 혈중 지질의 상호관계에 미치는 영향

        비만은 동맥경화의 위험인자로서 혈중에 triglyceride의 농도를 종가시키고, 상대적으로 HDL-Cholesterol의 농도를 감소시킴과 동시에 수축기 혈압을 상승시킨다. 본 연구에서 홍삼제품류를 4년 또는 5년 동안 복용해 온 건강한 사람 (ginseng군)과 홍삼제품을 복용하지 않은 건강한 사람 (control군)을 대상으로 하여 신체 계측치로부터 비만지수를 구하고 이것과 혈중의 triglyceride (TG)농도, TG/HDL-Cholesterol ratio 및 수축기 혈압과의 상호관계를 연구한 바, ginseng군에서는 대조군에 비해 혈중의 TG 농도가 일정하게 유지되었고, TG/HDL-Cholesterol ratio 및 수축기 혈압도 일정하게 유지되었다. 이러한 현상은 ginseng군에서 기호품으로 alcohol을 섭취하거나, 흡연을 한 경우에도 상관없이 일정하게 유지 되었다. 이 결과는 홍삼제품류를 장기 복용하면 비만의 저하 및 고혈압 또는 동맥경화의 위험인자가 억제될 수 있고, 결론적으로 비만, 고혈압 및 동맥경화를 예방할 수 있을 것으로 추정한다. Obesity is the risk fcactor of atherosclerosis and not only increases triglyceride concentration in blood but also decreases relatively the ratio of TG to HDL-Cholesterol in blood. In case of obesity, systolic blood pressure is also increased in responding the increase of TG in blood. Index of obesity in red ginseng-taking group (ginseng group) was lower as compared with non-red ginseng-taking group (control group). The TG concentration, the ratio of triglyceride to HDL-cholesterol in blood and systolic blood pressure were decreased in the subjects of ginseng group compared with that in control group. It is inferred that long-term intake of ginseng products may help to prevent the risk of atherosclerosis and obesity.

      • 내시경적 조임근절개술후에 발생한 췌십이지장 가성동맥류 1예

        We reported a case of pancreatic pseudoaneurysm, involving pancreaticoduodenal artery, developed after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) with endoscopic sphinterotomy. A 54 year old woman was transferred to our hospital due to sustained hematochezia and hypovolemia. A week before admission, she underwent ERCP with endoscopic sphinterotomy for acute cholangitis in local clinics. She developed abdominal pain and hematochezia at 12 hours after the procedures. A post procedure contrast enhanced computed tomography of abdomen demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm in inferior portion of pancreatic head. This was not present on the pre procedure contrast enhanced computed tomography of abdomen and was thought to arise from the pancreaticoduodenal artery as a complication of the pre sphincterotomy. She was brought to our emergency room in a state of hypovolemia. A upper endoscopy showed active bleeding from ampula of vater. An celiac angiography demonstrated pancreatic pseudoaneurysm involving inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery and selective coil embolization of was performed.

      • 圓光醫大 附屬 第2病院 神經精神科 患者에 對한 統計的 考察(Ⅱ)

        본 연구는 1986년 7월 11일부터 1991년 7월 10일까지 원광의대 부속 제2병원 신경정신과에서 의래 및 입원치료를 받았던 6,072명의 환자를 대상으로 병원 역학조사를 실시하고 그 결과를 1차조사 (박민철 등1986)와 비교했다. 1.전체 환자 중 남자가 54.4%로 여자보다 많았고, 이리와 이리 인접지역이 84.0%로 대부분의 지역을 나타났다. 의료보장상태는 보험환자가 57.1%, 의료보호환자21.8%, 일반환자 21.1%였으며 연령별로는 20대 24.6%, 30대 22.8%로 20대 30대가 절반정도를 차지했다. 2.외래환자에서는 신경중성장애가 46.0%로 가장 많고 정동장애, 경련성장애 순이며, 입원환자에서는 정신분열증이 30.5%로 가장 많고 기질성정신장애, 정동장애의 순이었다. 3.남자는 신경증성쟝애(23.4%), 정신분열증, 기질성정신장애 순이고 여자는 신경증성장애(39.9%), 정동장애, 정신분열증의 순이었다. 남자가 여자보다 많은 진단은 알코올정신장애(94.6%), 기질성정신장애, 소아정신장애 순이고, 여자가 남자보다 많은 진단은 정동장애(64.5%), 신경증성장애였다. 4.진단별 연령분포에서 신경증성장에는 30대(25.3%), 20대, 40대 순이고, 정신분열증은 20대(40.5%), 30대, 40대 순이며, 정동장애는 20대, 30대, 50대 순이나 비교적 비슷한 융이었다. 5.진단별 발병연령에서 신경증성장에는 20대, 30대가 절반이고,정신분열증은 20대(51.3%), 10대, 30대 순이며 정동장애는 20대(30.7%), 30대, 50대 순이었다. 진단별 평균 발병연령은 신경증성장애 32.7세, 정동장애 36.1세, 정신분열증 23.6세였다. 6.진단별 이병기간은 2년이상이 신경증성장에 28.3%, 정신분열증 68.5% 정동장애 43.9%인데 전체적으로 41.0%였다. 진단별 평균 이병기간은 정신분열증 73.2개월, 정동장애 45.5개월, 신경증성장애 29.5개월이었다. We examined epidemiologic study of 6,072 patients who visited Wonkwang Neuropsychiatric hospital since July 11 of 1986 until July 10 of 1991 and compared this results with previous study(Park et al 1986). The study revealed as follows:1. Of total patients males visited this hosptial more than females as 57.1%, Most of them(84.0%) resided Iri and neighbouring Iri. In the point of insurance, insured patients, medicaid patients and uninsured patients were 57.1%, 21.8% and 21.1% respectively. On the distribution of age, the twenties, the thirties were 24.6%, 22.8% respectively and twenties and thirties were about half of total patients. 2. Of outpatients neurotic disorder was the most as 46.0%, secondly mood disorder and thirdly convulsive disorder, but of inpatients schizophrenia was the most as 30.5%, secondly organic mental disorder and thirdly mood disorder. 3. Of males neurotic disorder was the most as 23.4%, secondly schizophrenia, and thirdly organic mental disorder, but of females neurotic disorder was the most as 39.9%, secondly mood disorder and thirdly schizophrenia. alcoholic mental disorder(94.6%), organic mental disorder, child mental disorder were mostly found in males,but mood disorder(64.5%) and neurotic disorder were mostly found in females. 4. On the distribution of age neurotic disorder was found the most in the thirties(25.3%), next in the twenties and in the forties, and schizophrenia was found the most in the twenties(40.5%), next in the thirties and in the forties, but mood disorder was found the most in the twenties, next in the thirties and in the forties but revealed similar rates relatively. 5. On the distribution of age of onset neurotic disorder developed nearly half during the twrnties and the thirties, schizophrenia developed mostly during the twenties (51.3%), secondly the teens and thirdly the thirties, but mood disorder developed firstly the twenties(30.7%), secondly the thirties and thirdly the fifties. on the average age of onset of illness neurotic disorder, mood disorder and schizophrenia were 32.7 years, 36.1 years and 23.6 years respectively. 6. On the duration of illness more than two years was 28.3% in neurotic disorder, 68.5% in schizophrenia and 3.9% in mood disorder and on the average duration of illness schizophrenia, mood disorder and neurotic disorder were 73.2 months, 45.5 months and 29.5 months respectively.

        Conceptual Study for Tissue-Regenerative Biodegradable Magnesium Implant Integrated with Nitric Oxide-Releasing Nanofi bers

        The excessive initial corrosion rate of Mg is a critical limitation in the clinical application of biodegradable Mg implantsbecause the device loses its fi xation strength before the fractured bone heals. This study suggests a new approach to overcomethis hurdle by accelerating tissue regeneration instead of delaying the implant biodegradation. As angiogenesis is anessential process in early bone regeneration, a Mg implant coated with electrospun nanofi bers containing nitric oxide (NO),which physiologically promotes angiogenesis, is designed. The integrated device enables adjustable amounts of NO to bestored on the NO donor-conjugated nanofi ber coating, stably delivered, and released to the fractured bone tissue near theimplanted sites. An in vitro corrosion test reveals no adverse eff ect of the released NO on the corrosion behavior of the Mgimplant. Simultaneously, the optimal concentration level of NO released from the implant signifi cantly enhances tube networkformation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells without any cytotoxicity problem. This indicates that angiogenesis canbe accelerated by combining NO-releasing nanofi bers with a Mg implant. With its proven feasibility, the proposed approachcould be a novel solution for the initial stability problem of biodegradable Mg implants, leading to successful bone fi xation.

        Effects of Pilger Rolling and Heat Treatment on Microstructure and Corrosion Resistance of Ag-electroplated 304 Stainless Steel Tubes

        We introduce a cost-effective method that combines electroplating with metal cold working processes to manufacture compositetubes with robust corrosion resistance. First, a 3-step electroplating process was developed to form an adhesive anduniform Ag coating on the outer wall of a 304 stainless steel tube. The process consisted of a Ni-strike step for removing thepassivation layer of the initial 304 tube, Cu deposition for smoothing the surface by adding a buffer layer, and Ag deposition. To reinforce the interfacial adhesion between the electroplated layers and the 304 tube and increase the area of the Ag coating,a pilger rolling or pilger rolling + heat-treatment process was performed after the Ag electroplating process. Scanningelectron microscopy of the composite tubes after each process indicated that the as-deposited Ag coating changed fromhaving a rough to smooth surface after only pilger rolling and with additional heat treatment. Electron backscatter diffractionanalysis of the microstructures and textures of the tubes revealed that dynamic recrystallization occurred extensively duringpilger rolling, resulting in the formation of a relatively defect-free grain structure without heat treatment. Furthermore,electrochemical polarization curves determined that the Ag-coated composite tubes are superior to the uncoated 304 tubein terms of corrosion resistance under Cl−atmosphere, owing to the formation of a AgCl passivation layer during testing. Surface analysis of the composite tubes suggests that the properties of the AgCl passivation layer are related to the grainsize of the Ag coating and the density of plastic-deformation-induced defects.
