Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 212-230, 1999. -Hepatitis B is caused by hepadnavirus. Hepatitis B virus replicates through 3.5kb pregenomic RNA intermediate which is regulated by core promoter. Pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus has been bilieved the result of host immune response. But recently many studies have reported that high level of viral replication caused by mutation in core promoter might result in severs hepatitis. But these studies were performed in vitro, not in vivo. So there is yet debate about which factor, viral of host factor, is more important in pathogenesis of hepatitis B virus. So we measured real viral replication level in 204 chronic hepatitis B patients by quantifying HBV DNA from sera by our novel PCR-based more sensitive method, and compared these results with ALT level measured from same sera, which indicates liver cell damage. Surprisingly there are no significant correlation between HBV DNA quantity and ALT level. Then we cloned core promoter region. In SSCP, we found that many viral mutants coexist in one patient. Base on SSCP result, we chose main viral core promoter type in each patients, which is thought to determine overall viral replication level in this patient. Main type of core promoter region of each 41 patients were directly sequenced. And with these we measured promoter activity by luciferase assay system and compared promoter activity with on another. We found tha there were some differences in promoter activity according to core promoter sequences. And we constructed replication-competent viral constructs with core promoter from 41 patients and Transfected these into HepG2 cell and measured HBV DNA by southern blot. There were also differences in HBV DNA quantity according to core promoter sequences. On these all results we investigated correlation between the effect of HBV core promoter on viral replication in vitro and HBN DNA quantity, ALT level from sera of each patients. We found there is no significant correlation among them. As a result, we concluded that in determining severity chronic hepatitis B patients, host factors of each patient is more important rather than replicative activity of virus itself.

        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

        Although information technology has been developed fast, large amount of machine printed document images are not properly handled due to immature document layout analysis techniques. Previous research has focused on character recognition itself to improve character recognition accuracy. Recently, however, some efforts are made to analyze complex document layout automatically. In this paper, we propose document layout analysis and understanding method for various Hangul document images. Skew detection is performed using projection profile and connected component layout information. Top-down and bottom-up methods are combined to analyze document layout. After text region and non-text region determination, table is further processed to extract row, column, and cell position. We got very high performance for skew correction, zone detection, and table processig from experiments with various Hangul document images.

        묘지 조성사업지의 비탈면 보호공법에 관한 연구(Ⅰ) : 강릉시 시범 공설묘지 조성사업을 중심으로

        강릉시 시범 공설묘지 조성사업은 경사 30˚ 의 표고차가 심한 산지를 절 · 성토하여 계단식 묘역단을 조성하는 공사로 수직고 15m이상의 대절토 및 성토부가 산재하고 있다. 특히 묘역단장후 주변 유입수 및 표면 유출수에 의한 비탈면 붕괴, 묘역단 유실 등의 피해가 발생할 경우 보수 또는 보강이 사실상 어려운 실정이며, 사회적 여론으로 확대될 가능성이 크므로 비탈면 보호에 필요한 녹화공법을 검토하였다. 구체적인 연구내용으로는 설계도면 및 현장답사를 통한 문제 비탈면 추출, 비탈면의 물리적 특성과 식생의 생육상황 파악, 비탈면 주변부의 식생조사와 유용식생 선발, 비탈면의 토양조건 분석 및 비탈면 토사의 기본물성 조사 등이며, 이를 기초로 하여 비탈면 현황 및 문제점을 파악하고, 그 대안을 제시하였다. The construction of a public cemetery in Kangnung city includes terraced graveyard with cutting or banking in mountain which has severe altitude differences with a slope of 30˚. Therefore, there are scattered cutting and banking sections with vertical height more than 15m. Especially, if the slope failure or the loss of a graveyard happens after graveyard establishment due to surface flow and inflow around, it is difficult to repair, causing serious public censure. Accordingly. revegetation works were examined that need protection of slope. The specific content of the study was the selection of slopes requiring special care through blueprint and field investigation the measurement of the physical property of slope and the situation of vegetative growth, the investigation of vegetation in slopes and the selection of vegetation, and the analysis of soil condition of slopes and the physical condition of slope sediment. On the basis of investigations some alternatives were proposed.Key words: public cemetery, slope protection works, revegetation works

        흰쥐 삼차신경 척수감각핵 미측소핵 세포의 흥분성 시냅스 전도에 대한 nociceptin의 효과

        The caudal subnuleus of the spinal trigeminal nucleus(medullary dorsal horn;MDH)is implicated in the processing of nociceptive information in the orofacial region. In the present study, whole cell patch clamp recordings were carried out on MDH neurons in brainstem slic of neonatal rats to investigate the characteristics of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents(sEPSCs) and the roles of nocieptin/orphanin FQ on excitatory synaptic transmission. In the presence of atrychnine(1uM) and bicuculline(20uM), spontaneous inward currents at -70㎷ were observed. the baseline frequency, amplitude and decay time constant of sEPSCs were 2.0±0.5㎐,23.0±1.8㎀, 3.8±0.2㎳, repectively. sEPSCs were mediated by non-NMDA and NMDA receptors. The specific AMPA receptor antagonist GYKI-52466(50uM)completely blocked the non-NMDA mediated sEPSCs, indicating that they are mediated by an AMPA-preferring receptor. Perfusion of the opioid orphan receptor(ORL₁)agonist nociceptin(3uM)reduced the frequency of sEPSCs and miniature EPSCs(mEPSCs). The effects of nociceptin were blocked by the selective ORL₁receptor antagonist〔Nphe'〕nociceptin(1-13)NH_2(3uM)and were not affected by the non-specific opioid receptor antagonist naloxone(10uM). To investigate the specificity of this synaptic inhibition, we selectively astivated the nociceptive C fibers with capsaicin, which induced a strong increase in the frequency of sEPSCs. In the presence of nociceptin, the response to capsaicin was diminished. In concilsion, these results suggest that nociceptin inhibits excitatory synaptic transmission in the MDH by acting on presynaptic ORL₁receptors.

      • 중학교 일반학급 학생과 특수학급 학생의 체력검사 비교분석

        The purpose of the study was to compare regular and special class students' development of physical fitness factors throughout three years of middle school. Also the differences in physical fitness factors between girls and boys in the third year regular and special classes in middle schools were investigated. To obtain the data of physical fitness for this study, 100 students(regular class boys(n=25), regular class girls(n=25), special class boys(n=25) and special class girls(n=25) who enrolled in middle schools in Seoul were surveyed. This study provided the information for a diagnosis of regular and special class students' physical fitness levels. Results of this study provided the data for establishing the polices of the physical education and the basic data for setting a physical education curriculum.

        Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide on Neuronal Excitability and Synaptic Transmission in Rat Substantia Gelatinosa Neurons

        The superficial dorsal horn, particularly substantiagelatinosa (SG) in the spinal cord, receives inputs fromsmall-diameter primary afferents that predominantly conveynoxious sensation. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are toxicagents that may be involved in various neurodegenerativediseases. Recent studies indicate that ROS are also involvedin persistent pain through a spinal mechanism. In thepresent study, whole cell patch clamp recordings werecarried out on SG neurons in spinal cord slice of young ratsto investigate the effects of hydrogen peroxide on neuronalexcitability and excitatory synaptic transmission. In currentclamp condition, tert-buthyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH), anROS donor, depolarized membrane potential of SG neuronsand increased the neuronal firing frequencies evoked bydepolarizing current pulses. When slices were pretreatedwith phenyl-N-tert-buthylnitrone (PBN) or ascorbate, ROSscavengers, t-BuOOH did not induce hyperexcitability. Involtage clamp condition, t-BuOOH increased the frequencyand amplitude of spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents(sEPSCs), and monosynaptically evoked excitatory postsynapticcurrents (eEPSCs) by electrical stimulation of the ipsilateraldorsal root. These data suggest that ROS generated byperipheral nerve injury can modulate the excitability of theSG neurons via pre- and postsynaptic actions.

      • 배드민턴 경기내용의 역학적 변인 분석

        The purpose of the study was to provide the efficiency of techniques used by the player during the game. Two female players who are ranked 3th in single and 60th in double at IBF were analyzed using three-dimensional analysis techniques. Time, distance, trajectiry, and acceleration of moving were measured. The 3th player in moving time took less time than 60th player except driven clear, also in moving distance she moved shorter. After attack, the 3th player returned fast to the center of court. When both players moved fast to receive the attacked shuttle, for the next movement the rate of mistakes was increased. Especially, the rate of mistakes in hairpin was showed highly.
