Adventitial cystic disease (ACD) is a very rare condition characterized by the accumulation of a cyst filled with gelatinous substance in the adventitia of a vessel adjacent to the joint area. The cyst usually compresses the vessel lumen, causing claudication or leg swelling. The disease usually affects the popliteal artery. However, several cases of venous ACDs particularly in the common femoral or external iliac vein have been reported. The definition, diagnosis, and optimal treatment of ACD remain controversial because of its rarity and the inconsistent use of terminology. The heterogeneity of the reported cases is more prominent in venous ACD. Herein, the accurate terminology of cysts correlated to the joint (synovial cyst, ganglion cyst, and adventitial cyst) and the pathogenesis, anatomy, and optimal therapy of venous ACD are discussed in detail to establish reporting standards for future studies.
Intimal Hyperplasia in Loop-Injured Carotid Arteries Is Attenuated in Transglutaminase 2-Null Mice

Arterial restenosis frequently develops after open or endovascular surgery due to intimalhyperplasia. Since tissue transglutaminase (TG2) is known to involve in fibrosis, woundhealing, and extracellular matrix remodeling, we examined the role of TG2 in the processof intimal hyperplasia using TG2-null mice. The neointimal formation was comparedbetween TG2-null and wild-type (C57BL/6) mice by two different injury models; carotidligation and carotid loop injury. In ligation model, there was no difference in intimalthickness between two groups. In loop injury model, intimal hyperplasia developed in bothgroups and the intimal/medial area ratio was significantly reduced in TG2-null mice(P = 0.007). TG2 was intensely stained in neointimal cells in 2 weeks. In situ activity of TG2in the injured arteries steadily increased until 4 weeks compared to uninjured arteries. Taken together, intimal hyperplasia was significantly reduced in TG2-null mice, indicatingthat TG2 has an important role in the development of intimal hyperplasia. This suggeststhat TG2 may be a novel target to prevent the arterial restenosis after vascular surgery.

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is an effective, safe, and non-invasive modality for pain relief and tissue regeneration. Because, ESWT is used on various medical areas and many diseases, but its use is limited on genitourinary disease, except urinary stone. However, many studies about efficacy of ESWT in chronic prostatitis, Peyronie's disease, and erectile dysfunction are published recently. Many people are suffering from these diseases all over the world, but these diseases are difficult to treat effectively by previous therapy, so ESWT will be able to be an alternative treatment for them. Of course, the physiology of ESWT is not confirmed to be a standard treatment scientifically, therefore it is necessary to make a greater effort to investigate it.

The jaws of children differ from those of adults in the aspects of architectural and mechanical properties, sites, form and treatment modality. This study reviews the result of treatment of pediatric mandibular fractures between 1994 and 1998 at dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, School of dentistry, Wonkwang University by means of the age and sex distribution, mechanism of injury, location of fractures and associated patterns, fracture management, postoperative complications, any associated injuries to other organ systems. Total number of these study was 61 facial bone fractures in 32 patients. The results were as follows. 1.The pediatric mandibular fractures predominated in the age of 6∼12, and had no sexual predilection. 2.The main cause of pediatric mandibular fractures was the traffic related accidents(56.2%) 3.The condylar fracture only was 23 cases (37.7%) in total 61 sites of mandibular fractures and the symphysis fracture was 20 (32.7%) ; the highest incidence of mandibualr fracture was the symphysis with unilateral condyle combined fracture in 61 total mandibular fracture sites. 4.The major postoperative complication was deviation during mouth opening (41.2%) and the facial asymmetry(17.7%) in second. 5.Soft tissue laceration(53%) was the most associated injury with mandibular fracture and the abdominal injury(12.5%), the head injury(12.5%), and the extrimity injury (6.2%) in order.
중안면부 골절이 하악 과두 골절에 미치는 영향에 관한 임상적 연구

This is clinico-statistical & retrospective study of 30 patients with only unilateral mandibular condyle fracture and combined with 24 midface fracture patients who were treated with open reduction in Wonkwang University Dental Hospital during the period 1993 to 2000. The results were as follows : 1. In mandibular condyle fracture combined with midface fracture, the most incident type is associated with zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture and level Ⅳ of mandibular condyle fracture combined with ZMC fracture is the most related(33.32%). 2. In the period of intermaxillary fixation, unilateral mandibular condyle fracture group (9.8 days) is shorter than combined with midface fracture group (15.3 days), but no statistical difference between two groups(p.>0.05). 3. In the mouth opening recovery, unilateral mandibular condyle fracture group is faster than combined with midface fracture group in post-operative 1 month, but no significant difference between two-groups after 3 months postoperatively (p>0.05). 4. In two-groups, treatment method is almost open reduction with internal fixation(ORIF) and overall 25% temporary complications were shown, but little lower incidence in unilateral condylar fracture group.
