        Nitric Oxide (NO), derived from L-arginine, is produced by two types (constitutive and inducible) of nitric oxide synthase (NOS: cNOS and iNOS). The NO produced in large amounts by the iNOS is known to be responsible for the vasodilation and hypotension observed in septic shock and inflammation. The inhibitors of iNOS, thus, may be useful candidate for the treatment of inflammatory diseases accompanied by the overproduction of NO. We prepared alcoholic extracts of herbal drugs which have been used for the treatment of inflammation in oriental medicine. We have screened the inhibitory activity of NO production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophages after the treatment of these extracts. Among the 81 kinds of extracts of herbal drugs, 34 extracts showed potent inhibitory activity of NO production above 50% at the concentration of 50 (μg/ml. The inhibitory activities of NO production were also evaluated for several solvent fractions at three different concentrations. Especially, hexane soluble fractions of Agrimonia pilosa, Hydrangea serrata, Machilus thunbergii, Prunella vulgaris, Saussurea lappa, Tussilago farfara, and ethyl acetate soluble fractions of Angelica gigas, Ostericum koreanum, Torilis japonica, Perilla frutescence showed moderate activity at 10 and/ or 25 (μg/ml. These fractions are promising candidates for the study of the activity-guided chromatographic purification of active compounds.

        전통누룩 진균류를 이용한 입국의 제조 및 입국곰팡이의 동정

        Various koji were prepared by fungi isolated from traditional nuruk and their quality characteristics were investigated. Acidity and saccharification power of their koji were ranged in 5.0~6.8 and 128sp~241sp. Nine fungi which were showed good quality and sensory evaluation were identified by analysis of their nucleotide sequences with PCR-amplified 18S rDNA internal transcribed spacer-1(ITS-1) and ITS-4 genes. Among them, six strains were identified as Aspergillus oryzae and the other strains were identified as Mycocladus corymbiferus, Rhizopus oryzae, Lichtheimia corymbifera.

        Acute torsion of the ovary and ovarian mass is a recognized surgical emergency, but rarely has the diagnosis been made preoperatively on the basis of imaging studies. The sonographic findings in 14 cases of surgically proven torsion of the ovary and ovarian mass are described. Mostly cystic ovarian mass, engorged vessel, dilated uterine tube, beak-like echo(torsion site), smooth mass wall thickening an free-fluid collection in cul-de-sac are described. More significant in terms of specificity were the demonstration in 6 cases(42.9%) of the smooth mass wall thickening and in 8 cases(57.1%) of a free fluid in the cul-de-sac. We report the sonographic findings of ovary and ovarian mass torsion that may suggest the preoperative diagnosis of this condition.

      • 몇가지 β-lactam 항생제의 약효평가를 위한 Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC)의 비교

        In order to screen the new β-lactam antibiotics for clinical use. we were compared MIC values of various β-lactam antibiotics. We also tested the influence of pH, inoculum size, stability of antibiotics in medium and some kinds of media on MIC value. As a result, cefotaxime, cefoperazone, piperacillin, cefamandole, cephaloridine, cephapirin, cefazolin, cephalothin, cephaioylycn were scored in antimicrobial activity of MIC data.

      • 韓國人 下顎骨에 관한 體質人類學的 硏究

        Korean mandibles(male 71, female 23) were measured and analysed physical anthropologically, and compared with those of early 1900s Korean and with those of other nations. The results were as follows: 1. According to the Thomson index, the mandibular type of early 1900s Korean was mesognath, but changed into dolichognath lately. 2. It was considered that the national differences and chronologic changes in the same species were affected by genetic and environmental factors, but the environmental factors, such as improvement of nutritional conditions, changes of foodstuffs and the changes of living pattern etc. should be encountered more significantly.

      • 다발성 뇌경색이 합병된 Pasteurella multocida 심내막염 1예

        저자들은 평소 건강하였던 환자에서 동물과의 접촉없이 P.multocida에 의한 세균성 심내막염이 발생하여 임상 경과 중 다발성 뇌경색이 합병되었으나, 항균제 투여만으로 완치가 되었던 증례를 경험하였기에 문헌 고찰과 함께 이를 보고하는 바이다. In recent years, an increasing number of infections with Pasteurella multoida in human have been reported, causing a wide range of systemic illness. Infective endocarditis with P.multocida, however, is still quite rare. Recently we experienced a cases of P. multocida endocarditis in a 26-year old man who was admitted because of fever and headache. He denied any recent contact with animals. P. multocida was identified from blood cultures and echocardiography showed mitral regurgitation and vegetations on mitral valve area. He became stuporous on the fourth hospital day and the brain MRI showed acute cerebral infarction. He was treated with penicillin intravenously for six weeks, which successfully controlled clinical features of infections. To our knowledge, this is the first case of P. multocida endocarditis complicated with cerebral infarction in Korea.

      • 다제 내성 폐렴 구균에 대한 CFC-222 의 시험관내 항균력 및 살균 속도

        목적 : 새로이 개발된 quinolone 제제인 CFC-222와 함께 기존의 항균제들의 MIC를 비교하여 CFC-222가 항균제 내성 폐렴 구균의 치료에 사용될 수 있는 약제인지를 검증하고 아울러 in vitro time kill assay를 시행하여 CFC-222의 살균 속도를 검증하고자 하였다. 방법 : 국내 및 아시아 지역 국가에서 분리 확인된 폐렴 구균 균주 200주를 대상으로 하여 cefotaxime, CFC-222, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, sparfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, 그리고 meropenem에 대한 한천희석법을 이용하여 MIC를 결정하였다. In vitro time kill assay는 총 8균주(2 penicillin-susceptible, 2 intermediate, 4 resistant)를 대상으로 시행하였고 대상이 되는 항균제는 CFC-222, sparfloxacin, penicillin G로 하였다. 결과 : 폐렴 구균 균주 200주에 대한 한천 희석법을 이용한 MIC 결과는 페니실린 MIC가 증가함에 따라 cefotaxime과 meropenem의 MIC가 증가하는 경향을 보였다. Quinolone제제 중에서는, CFC-222와 sparfloxacin의 MIC_(90)이 페니실린 내성과 관계없이 0.5㎍/mL 이하로 가장 낮았다. time kill assay 결과 CFC-222는 MIC의 4배 농도에서 페니실린 고도내성 4균주 전체에 대해 8시간째 살균 효과를 보였다. 반면 sparfloxacin과 penicillin은 MIC의 4배 농도에서 12시간째 살균효과를 보였다. 결론 : CFC-222와 sparfloxacin이 가장 우수한 시험관내 항균 효과를 보였다. In vitro time kill assay 결과 CFC-222가 sparfloxacin에 비해 페니실린 고도 내성 균주에 대해 더 빠른 살균속도를 보였다. Background : CFC-222 is a new fluoroquinolone which possesses a broad antibacterial activity, being especially potent against gram-positive bacteria as well as gram negative bacteria. To evaluate the in vitro activity and the bactericidal killing rate of CFC-222 against Streptococcus pneumoniae, agar dilution test and lime-kill study was performed. Method : 200 clinical isolates were tested by agar dilution method to determine MICs of penicillin, cefotaxime, meropenern, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacm, sparfloxacin, and CFC-222. Time-kill studies were performed with 8 pneumococcal isolates (2 peni-cillin-susceptible, 2 intermediate, and 4 resistant) to compare the bactericidal activity of penicillin, sparfloxacin, and CFC-222. Results : MICs of cefotaxime and meropenem showed increasing tendency as penicillin MIC is increased. Of the quinolones tested, CFC-222 and sparfloxacin had the lowest MIC (MIC90 = 0.5 ㎎/mL), regardless of the penicillin-susceptibility of the strains. CFC-222 yielded 99.9 % killing of all penicillin-resistant strains after 8 h at 4 MIC, while penicillin and sparfloxacin were bactericidal after 12 h at 4 MIC. Conclusion : By MIC and time-kill combined, CFC-222 and sparfloxacin were the most potent agents according to the MICs, whereas CFC-222 was more rapidly bactericidal than sparfloxacin against penicillin-resistant isolates.

      • 액체 주방세제 전과정평가에 관한 연구

        LG생활건가에서 생산되는 액체 주방세제의 환경성을 조사하기 위하여 전과정평가를 실시하였다. 제품별 전과정목록표를 도출하였으며, 이를 이용하여 수계생태독성, 지구온난화, 광화학스모그, 인간독성, 산성화, 부영양화에 대한 영향평가를 수행하였다. 그 결과, 제품 전과정 가운데 제품 계기단계에서 환경영향이 가장 높게 나타났고, 특히 수계생태독성에 의한 영향이 높게 나타났다. 주방세제의 환경지수에 영향을 미치는 원인물질을 찾아내고 개선물질로 대체하여 환경지수가 18% 감소한 제품을 개발하였다. With the kitchen detergents produced by LG Household & Healthcare, we performed life cycle assessment to examine their environmental properties. Life cycle inventories of kitchen detergent were drawn, and the impact assessment on six categories including aquatic eotoxicity, global warming, photochemical oxidant formation, human toxicity, acidification, and eutrophication was made using the inventories. As a result, it was found that environmental load is the highest at the end of life, and the worst impact category is aquatic ecotoxicity. We found the major ingredient determining environmental indicator and replaced it with more environmentally friendly material, so that the product of 18%-improved environmental indicator was developed.
