The purpose of this study is to anlayze listening activities in high school English textbooks and to ascertain whether the results are applicable to the 7th national curriculum aims. Based on the analysis criteria presented by Morley(1991), Richards(1983), and Ur(1984), two different analysis cirteria were applied for an in-depth analysis of the listening activities involved in the textbooks. The results of the analysis show that the philosophy of the 7th national curriculum is properly reflected in some parts of the textbooks. On the other hand, some listening activitis in textbooks are emphasized insufficiently and improperly. Through the results of the study, it is presented that the textbook should be designed and improved for the development of students' listening abilities and their communicative competence with the contents of more various and balanced listening activities.

The purpose of this study was to investigate items of English listening materials and to analyze them according to the learners' levels of proficiency and the kinds of listening processes. Learners were divided into three levels (beginning, intermediate, and advanced level), and the listening processes were also categorized into three kinds (top-down, bottom-up, and interactive process). Consequently, the listening items were subdivided into nine classes. Nineteen listening textbooks were used for the analysis. Each listening item was given explanations of the aim, task, characteristic, type of listening process and some advice applicable to study. The use of listening items appropriate for the learners' level and target listening process can find the maximum efficiency in studying listening. The results presented here can be widely used in designing listening materials and listening test items for the Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test for college entrance.

The main purpose of this study is to find out whether current English textbooks for middle school students in Korea are properly leveled or graded. The researchers utilized Fry Readability Graph, Flesch Readability Formula, and Dale-Chall Readability Formula for the analysis of eight English textbooks which are being used for second graders. The results of the analysis are as follows. 1. The texts are at least one or two levels higher than the formula suggest. 2. Most of the English textbooks are not properly graded in the light of readability. 3. Dale-Chall's readability formula has more precise prediction about readability analysis among them.

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

In this study, the researchers evaluate the hypothesis that the reaction time (RT) in the brain is largely dependent on age and gender. The researchers tested English and Korean words using two types: reading as visual stimuli, and listening as auditory stimuli. The E-Prime program installed in functional magnetic resonance imaging (f-MRI) was used. There are 136 Korean subjects in three groups: 30 children (5th and 6th grade elementary school students), 76 young adults (college students), and 30 adults (35-53 years old). In the listening test, the variation for the two languages was different among the three age groups, regardless of gender, whereas the data did not show meaningful differences in the reading test. The findings will provide some meaningful information regarding perception and acquisition of a foreign language.
