        A Case Study of the Use of an In-house Oral Exam in a University English Program

        Evaluating nonnative English-speakers' English speaking ability has steadily been emphasized over the past two decades in the undergraduate English programs at Korean universities. However, there is insufficient information about how classroom-based oral exams are conducted at college level. In this study, an in-house English oral exam was used to measure students' English speaking abilities. This study examined if the evaluations of an in-house oral exam differ among teachers, and whether the oral exam measures the level of achievement of students' English speaking abilities adequately. Additionally, this study investigated how the students perceived the classroom-based oral exam. The data used included both pre-and post- test results of oral exams and survey questionnaires collected from the students. The results showed that there was no significant mean difference among teachers, which indicates teachers scored with consistency, and the students made statistically significant progress in their speaking abilities. However, the results revealed that the students did not fully master the target course objectives. Based on the findings, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

        A Cross-Cultural Study of Korean EFL Learners and Native English Speakers in Refusal Strategy Use

        A considerable amount of study on the speech act of refusals has paid attention to similarities and differences of strategy use employed by native and nonnative English speakers. However, a few studies have touched on pragmatic transfer from Korean to English refusals. This study attempted to examine if there are any similarities and differences in the ways which Korean EFL learners, native speakers of Korean and native speakers of English perform the speech act of refusals. This paper also investigated whether there is any evidence of pragmatic transfer used by Korean speakers from L1 in their use of L2. To do this, 40 subjects participated in this study; 10 native speakers of English (group 1), 10 Korean EFL learners with high English language proficiency (group 2), 10 with low English language proficiency (group 3) and 10 native speakers of Korean (group 4). All subjects were asked to fill out a Discourse Completion Test. The results showed that group 1, the native English-speaking speakers, utilized semantic formulas the most, and group 3 used refusal strategies the least. The findings demonstrated several similarities in their refusal strategy use. All four groups employed indirect strategies to refusals more than direct and adjuncts strategies. Reason was the most frequently used semantic formula among the four groups. The results also showed that socio-pragmatic factors such as social status were closely related to the participants' refusal use. All Korean groups tended to offer reasons more frequently to the high status person than the other two statuses. Additionally, the findings of this study revealed evidence of pragmatic transfer from L1 occurred in refusal responses of EFL Korean groups. Theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed.

        The Dilemma of a Pro-Business State: The Government-chaebol Relations of the MB Lee Government in Korea

        The Lee Myung-bak government put economic growth in his main agenda which aimed a trickle-down effect through “business-friendly.” His government offered various benefits such as deregulations and tax-cut to chaebol. Lee government policy toward big businesses is divided into three periods: The “deregulation period” from 2008 to first half of 2009; “transition period” that focused on protection of working class and large and small companies from second half of 2009 to mid-2010; and “fair competition and controlling inflation period” that strengthened chaebol restrictions and administrative guidance from 2011 to 2012. All these changes emerged because the trickle-down effect failed and the demand of economic democratization rose before the election in 2012. When civil society were relatively excluded, the policy change was followed by the conflict within the ruling party due to the election loss and policy issues. Economic policy of Lee government eventually became the target of criticism for both working class and capital which means that the government’s autonomy is seriously compromised. Despite the policy change, Lee government could not stop the pro-business policies even in order to fulfill his main agenda of economic growth.

        교양영어 교과목 관련 튜터링 프로그램 운영과 개선 방안

        This study examined how a basic English tutoring program conducted by a local private university in Korea for the past three years has been operated and what improvements it has. In order for the program to be operated successfully, the following basic learning components were needed: learning materials, tutors and tutees, tutoring spaces, a program operation manual and assessment tools. Each semester the basic English tutoring program has been progressed for 8 weeks. The professor developed the learning materials, selected qualified senior students as tutors and conducted a workshop with tutuors for instructing how to teach tutees and how to deal with them. The tutors should keep a tutoring log and report it to the professor ever week. In order to check how well each tutor followed a tutoring procedure, there was a meeting in the middle of the program. At the end of semester, tutors should select the best tutees whose achievement was very high, and there was a final briefing session for awarding them. All tutees should take pre-and post- English tests to examine the effect of tutoring program on their English abilities and the results shown every semester revealed a significant mean improvement. As for the tutoring program improvements, more tutoring rooms should be provided, practical tips should be developed for recruiting tutees who really need basic English abilities and for tutors, there should be encouragement for materials development and use in order to have their active tutoring. 이 연구는 지방의 한 사립 대학교에서 2014-2학기부터 비교과 프로그램으로 시행된 기초 영어 튜터링 프로그램이 어떻게 운영 되었으며, 효과가 있었는지, 또한 개선사항은 무엇인지에 대해 살펴보았다. 먼저 프로그램이 성공적으로 운영되기 위해서는 교수활동 콘텐츠, 튜터와 튜티, 튜터링 공간, 프로그램 운영 매뉴얼과 평가도구 같은 기본적인 학습 구성요소가 필요하였다. 기초영어 동료 튜터링 프로그램은 매학기 8주 동안 실시하였으며 담당교수가 학습 자료를 개발하고 일정한 절차를 통해 실력 있는 선배학생을 튜터로 선정한 후 워크숍 실시, 이 후 튜터링을 실시하도록 하였다. 튜터는 학습일지를 작성하여 매주 담당교수에게 보고하고, 중간 튜터 회의를 통해 튜터링 학습 상태를 점검, 학기 말에는 우수 튜티를 선정, 최종 보고회를 통해 우수 튜티들을 시상하여 튜터링 활성화에 힘쓰도록 하였다. 또한 튜터링 학습이 효과가 있는지 알아보기 위해 튜티들에게 사전, 사후 영어시험을 실시한 결과 매 학기 튜티들의 영어 평균점수가 유의미하게 상승했으며 튜터링 만족도 설문지 설문 결과 튜티들이 튜터링 프로그램에 만족한 것으로 나타났다. 기초영어 튜터링 프로그램을 보다 효과적으로 운영하기 위해서는 튜터링 공간 확보, 기초학습이 필요한 튜티 학습자 모집을 위한 방안 간구, 튜터들의 적극적 학습자료 개발 및 사용 독려등이 있다.

        An Examination of Raters' Decision-Making Processes on English-speaking Evaluations

        There has been growing interest over the past two decades in investigating raters' rating processes through the analysis of verbal reports. The present study attempts to examine what features skilled native English-speaking raters attend to while they are evaluating nonnative English-speaking speakers' responses. This study employed think-aloud verbal reports made by four raters as they scored 10 nonnative English-speaking test-takers. There were 652 verbal protocols that occurred in total. The rating behaviors are categorized into 25 coding systems. The frequency analysis results from raters' verbal reports have showed that native English-speaking raters often heeded aspects of the performances that are relevant to the assessment criteria. Experienced raters tended to provide more verbal protocols for the evaluation of accuracy judgments compared to the other scoring criteria. While they assessing fluency, raters were most likely to rely more on pauses, hesitations or speed than contents, the number of repetitions or self-corrections. When raters made pronunciation judgments, they raters seemed to consider the degree of Korean accent the most. However, raters sometimes paid attention to features that were somewhat irrelevant to scoring criteria. Based on the findings, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

        북한강 수계에서 이취미를 유발하는 남조류(Anabaena spiroides)의 증식 특성

        Blue-green algae blooms occurred during early winter in the North-Han River, Korea. Among blue-green algae, Anabaena spiroides were observed for approximately 33 consecutive days, between 28 November and 30 December, 2011. A. spiroides emerged from Lake Uiam to Lake Paldang, depending on the flow of the river has spread downstream. Changes of physical water environment like rising water temperature and increasing hydraulic retention time influenced the A. spiroides bloom. The A. spiroides bloom showed a very rapid increase in cell density, and a slow decrease: the cell density increased to a maximum of 11,325 cells mL-1 in Lake Paldang (st. 5), and was completely disappeared after the water temperature dropped below 4˚C. A decrease in water temperature was the most influential factor among all environmental parameters, for the reduction of A. spiroides cell density. The A. spiroides bloom was accompanied with the occurrence of very high concentrations of the odor metabolite geosmin. Geosmin reached the peak value of 1,640 ng L-1 in Lake Paldang (st. 4). The geosmin concentration was very strongly correlated with cell numbers of A. spiroides.

        The effect of raters’ language background on English-speaking test ratings across test-takers’ oral proficiency levels

        This study examined whether or not raters’ language background influences Korean test-takers’ English-speaking evaluations. Five native and fourteen nonnative English-speaking raters scored 120 speaking samples divided into six different speaking levels in terms of accuracy, vocabulary, fluency and pronunciation. The MANOVA results showed that there were significant effects for raters’ language background on the ratings. Overall, the nonnative English-speaking raters were more severe in their judgments than the native English-speaking raters. There were significant mean differences in accuracy and vocabulary ratings between the two groups of raters across most test-takers’ speaking levels. However, there were no significant mean differences in ratings for higher levels of test-takers for some individual criteria such as fluency and pronunciation. This paper provided some evidence of the effect of language background on English-speaking ratings, indicating that there were some differences between the ratings produced by native and nonnative raters depending on test-takers’ oral proficiency levels and scoring criteria.

        표면 미세 가공기술을 이용한 마이크로 캔틸레버의 제작과 바이오센서로의 응용

        - We propose an optical and an electrical detection methods for detecting various bio-molecules effectively with microcantilevers. The microcantilevers were fabricated employing surface micromachining technique that has attractive advantages in terms of cost efficiency, simplicity and ability of fabricating in array. The fluid cell system for injection of bio-molecular solution is fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and a fused silica glass. The microcantilever is deflected with respect to the difference of the surface stress caused by the formation of self-assembled bio-molecules on the gold coated side of the microcantilever. It detected cystamine dihydrochloride and glutaraldehyde molecules and analyzed individual concentrations of the cystamine dihydrochloride solution. We confirm that the deflections of bending-up or bending-down are occurred by the bio-molecule adsorption and microcantilever can be widely used to a -TAS and a lab-on-a-chip for a potential detection of various bio-molecules.

        Effects of Strategy-based Instruction on Korean EFL College-level Students' English Speaking Abilities and their Communication Strategy Use

        The research of communication strategies has been conducted over three decades. A considerable amount of studies have focused on the identification and classification of communication strategies. However, there has been relatively a small amount of research on the relationship of communication strategy use, types of task, and strategy instruction effect. This study examines how strategy-based instruction could affect Korean EFL college-level students' English speaking abilities and their strategy use in relation to two speaking task types. A total of 81 students participated in the research, and they were divided into the experimental group who received the strategy instruction and the control group who had no strategy instruction. The results showed that both control and experimental groups have significantly improved their speaking proficiency in terms of their overall speaking performance. However, when their speaking abilities were compared by subscales, such as accuracy, fluency and pronunciation, significant differences were found in the accuracy and fluency areas on the picture description. The findings also revealed that the strategy instruction positively influenced the students' use of the speaking strategies, and their strategy uses were somewhat different from the task type. Theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed.
