        Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

      • 다공성 실리콘의 전기전도 메커니즘 연구

        The electrical current of porous silicon (PS) has been measured while several treatments are made to the samples. When the samples are exposed to air, the DC current increases or decreases depending on the surface conditions of the samples. Light soaking in air alters the direction of the current-change after air exposure, indicating that light soaking in air can cause a change in the band bending on the surface of PS. Optical absorption by defect states in PS-layer has been studied by photoconductivity spectroscopy. The magnitude of optical absorption in the gap, meaning gap states, is proportional to the photpluminescence (PL) intensity in infrared region. Absorption spectra measured under constant illumination are well matched with those measured under constant photocurrent, in other words, by constant photocurrent method (CPM). There are almost no correlations among surface effects, gap states, size of crystallites. These results suggest that electrical conduction in PS largely depends on the surface states.

      • 새로운 전극구조를 가진 AC-PDP의 전기광학적 특성 (I)

        새로운 전극구조를 가진 ac 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널(Plasma Display Panels, PDP)을 설계하여 전기 광학적 특성을 고찰하였다. 새로 설계된 전극은 종래의 ac 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널의 전극구조에 비하여 긴 방전경로를 가지고 있으며, 작은 전극 면적을 가지고 있다. 새로운 전극구조의 방전전압 특성은 종래의 구조에 비하여 큰 변화가 없었으나, 소비전력과 광효율 특성에 있어서 최대 40% 정도의 향상을 나타내었다. A new type ac plasma display panel(PDP) cells are designed and tested electrically and optically. This cell has the longer discharge path length and the smaller electrode area than conventional cell. It shows a higher luminous efficiency and a lower power consumption about 30∼40% improvement than the conventional ac PDP cells.

        리기다소나무 (Pinus rigida Miller) 판재의 압축이상재 (壓縮異常材) , 대응재 (對應材) 및 측면재 특성에 관한 주사전자현미경적인 연구

        In Korea, a study on the anatomical features of pitch pine(pinus rigida Miller) branch wood through photo-microscopical method was reported in 1972 by Lee. Therefore, as a further study of Lee's on the anatomical features in branch wood of pinus rigida miller that grows in Korea, compression wood, opposite wood, and side wood were selected and treated for the purpose of comparing their structures revealed on cross and radial surface through scanning electron microscope in this study. The obtained results in this study were summarized as follows: 1. The trachied transition from earlywood to latewoad is very gradual and the tracheids are nearly regular in both arrangement and size in compression wood but this transition in opposite wood and side wood is abrupt and the tracheids in opposite wood and side wood are less regular than those in compression wood. Also, the annual ring width of opposite wood is narrower than that of compression wood or side wood and the rays revealed on cross surface of side wood are more distinct than compression wood and apposite wood rays. 2. The tracheids of compression wood show roundish trends especially in earlywood but those of apposite wood and side wood show same angular trends. And intercellular space, helical cavity, and spiral chock are present in both earlywood and latewood of compression wood but not present in opposite wood and side wood irrespective of earlywood and latewood. 3. The wall thickness of latewood tracheid is similar to that of earlywood tracheid in compression wood whereas the wall thickness of latewood tracheid is by far thicker than that of earlywood tracheid in opposite wood and side wood and the S₃ layer of secondary wall is lack in comgression wood tracheid unlike opposite wood and side wood traeheid. 4. The tracheids in compression wood are often distorted at their tips unlike those in opposite wood and side wood and the bordered pit in compression wood tracheid is located at the bottom of helical groove unlike that in opposite wood and side wood tracheid. 5. The bordered pits in radial wall of apposite wood and side wood tracheids are oval in shape but those of compression wood tracheids show some modified oval shape. 6. in earlywood of side wood, the small apertures of cross-field pits are roundish triangle to rectangle and the large one are fenestriform through the caalition of two small ones. However, the small apertures of cross-field pits are upright oval and the large ones are procumbent oval shape in earlywood of opposite wood and the apertures of cross-field pits in compression wood are tilted bifacial convex lens shape in earlywood and slit in latewood because of the border on tracheid side.

      • Poplar 組織培養에 의한 anthocyanin 生成

        Poplar(Populus nigra)를 대상으로 組織培養時 callus 生長과 anthocyanin形成에 影響을 미치는 環境條件으로써 最適培地, 糖의 效果, 植物生長調節劑, 糖의 種類 및 日長의 影響을 검토하고자 遂行한 결과는 다음과 같이 요약된다. 1. SH 培地가 callus 및 anthocyanin형성에 효과적이었고 sucrose濃度는 5.5%가 우수하였다. 2. Auxin류의 효과에 있어서는 2,4-D 2.0 ㎎/ℓ에서 callus 및 anthocyanin형성에 가장 효과적 이었다. 3. Cytokinin류에서 BA가 kinetin에 비하여 callus生育을 顯著하게 抑制하였고 kinetin 0.2㎎/ℓ에서 anthocyanin형성이 가장 우수하였다. 4. 糖의 종류로는 fructose가 sucrose나 glucose에 비하여 callus增殖에 월등히 높은 효과를 보였고 anthocyanin形成量에는 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다. 5. 日長의 效果에서 anthocyanin形成은 日長이 길어질수록 促進되었으며 callus형성은 日長에 따른 차이를 보이지 않았다. The experiments were conducted to optimize culture conditions for callus growth and anthocyanin formation by in vitro culture of Populus nigra through tests of basal media, inorganic salts, plant growth regulators, sucrose concentrations, sugar and photoperiods. SH media supplemented with 55 g/l sucrose gave the best results in callus and anthocyanin formation. For the effects of plant growth regulators, anthocyanin formation was promoted by treatment with 2.0 ㎎/l 2,4-D. On the other hand, 0.2 ㎎/l kinetin showed the highest activity for anthocyanin synthesis while BA severely suppressed callus growth. Fructose compared with glucose remarkably promoted callus growth but anthocyanin formation showed no difference with sugar type. Anthocyanin pigment accumulation hastened by increasing photoperiod in culture room while callus growth was not affected with photoperiod.

        The aim of this paper is to find out proper answers to the questions of 'What a value generally is ?" and "How can a vague be constituted ?" by examining Dewey's theory of value. For this purpose discussions in this paper win be proceeded as follows. Firstly, in chapter 2 the relationship between value-judgment and truth-judgment would be examined. Dewey maintains that determination of truth and falsity depends upon value-judgment. Since truth is, for Dewey, a warrented or verified result obtained throughout the inquiry, in this chapter the relationship of inquiry with value-judgment would also be discussed. According to Dewey, an inquiry is a process in which a series of value judgment is proceeded. In chapter 3 we win be concerned with the role of truth in the formation of value. Here it would be known that being an instrument of inquiry, in Dewey's theory of value, truth can be applied to value formation process just as it could be applied to truth formation process. In chapter 4, not only the dichotomy of theory auld practice, but also the dichotomy of theoretical thinking and practical thinking would be examined. That Dewey did loot make distinction between theory and practice could be known, In chapter 5, principles, criteria and laws of inquiry and evaluation would be discussed, and in chapter 6 problem of how intellectual or scientific method could be applied to value formation would be examined. Viewing Dewey's value theory as based on his experimentalism or instrumentalism, the principle and method of his experimentalism or instrumentalism would be explanined. From the above discussions, we could be arrived at the following upshots. Dewey wanted to extend to moral and social problems the methods of investigation which had been eminently successful in the natural science. In order to effect this extension, he presented two thesis. One of these is that moral judgments are about empirical matters of fact. The other is that moral judgments can be experimentally confirmed. In order to defend the thesis that moral judgments are matter of fact, Dewey had to first maintain that values are objective occurrences in nature. It is known that in Dewey what is valuable is what is desirable from the viewpoint of science, moral, arts and religion which are means of production of the values. Ultimate values are not the absolute or transcendental values, It could be obtained at the last point in the series of inquiry. For defending the second thesis, Dewey asserts that 'intellectual method' consists of continuous reconstruction, continuous inquiry and problem solving and is also the method of accomplishing the ultimate value. Dewey's value theory is, I think, based on general method of truth formation. Dewey believed that just the method which is used to make truth-formation, it can he applied and extended to value-formation. Dewey tried, we can think, to make a harmony between natural sciences and moral subjects by applying the game method to both subjects. Thus vague is, in Dewey's thought, net a transcendental thing, but a natural thing which is gained by human experience. Value can be established just by inquiry which amounts to an operational, experimental, intellectural, and scientific way of thinking. This is the basic character of experimentalism or instrumentalism of Dewey, and it is one mode of his naturalism which goes through his whole philosophy. Dewey's view of value could be contributed to point out difficulties of transcendental non-naturalistic view of value. Futhermore, by its nature of promoting teleological progress of nature, Dewey's theory of vague could be characterized as a empirical metaphysics of nature.

        Many studies revealed the neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and chemopreventive actions of dietary flavonoids. The plausible mechanistic interpretation of the various effects of flavonoids was concentrated on the anti-oxidant or free radical-scavenging properties of these phytochernicals, both in model systems and under in vivo conditions. While there has been a major focus on the anti-oxidant properties. there is an emerging view that flavonoids and their in vivo metabolites. do not act as conventional hydrogen-donating anti-oxidants. but they may exert regulatory functions in cells through actions at protein kinase or lipid kinase signaling pathways. Flavonoids and more recently their metabolites. have been reported to act at phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI 3-kinase). Akt/protein kinase B(Akt/PKB), protein kinase C (PKC), mitogen activated protein kinase(MAP kinase), and various tyrosine kinases signaling cascades. Inhibitory or stimulatory actions at these pathways are likely to affect cellular function profoundly by altering the phosphorylation state of target molecules and by modulating gene expression. A clear understanding of the mechanisms of action of flavonoids, either as anti-oxidants or modulators of cellular signaling pathways, and the influence of their metabolism on these properties are key to the evaluation of these potent biomolecules as anti-cancer agents, cardio-protectants, and inhibitors of neurodegeneration.
