      • Histone deacetylase 3 is selectively involved in L3MBTL2-mediated transcriptional repression

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>This is the first report that L(3)mbt-like 2 (L3MBTL2) specifically interacts with the histone deacetylase domain of histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) via its MBT domain. Here, we show that L3MBTL2 selectively interacts with HDAC3, but not other class I HDACs. An in vitro peptide-binding assay demonstrated the specific association of HDAC3 with methylated histone-K20 tail and L3MBTL2. Furthermore, depletion of HDAC3 resulted in a decrease of methylated K20-H4, as well as an increase in acetylated histone H3. Consequently, HDAC3 knock-down selectively suppressed L3MBTL2-mediated transcriptional repression.         ‘분단’에서 ‘평화’로의 이행을 위한 DMZ 담론 변화 연구 -「판문점」과 「판문점2」와의 연관성을 중심으로-

        본 논의는 이호철의 통일론에 대한 통시적 고찰을 목적으로 한다. 이호철은 전 생애를 걸쳐 통일 운동을 실천한 작가이다. 그는 초기 혈연 중심의 민족주의적 통일원칙을 중심으로 남북교류의 당위성을 역설했다. 그의 통일 원칙은 민족 공동체라는 방향성과 민주주의라는 역량으로 양분되어, 독재국가에서 벗어나 자유 민주주의를 구축하고자 했다. 반면 1980년대 후반 재야 운동권과 결별하며, 스스로 통일론자의 정체성을 드러냈다. 이호철은 통일을 이루기 위한 방안에 집중하기 시작했으며, 그 전제들은 북한 독재 국가의 변화, 그리고 연방국가적 형태를 통한 민간 교류였다. 그는 민주평화론을 중심으로 한반도 평화를 구축하고자 했으며, 북한 독재 체제에 대해 비판을 동반한 유보적 입장을 반복했다. 특히 ‘한살림 통일론’을 통해 체제에서 탈피한 새로운 대안을 제시하고자 했다. 「판문점2」는 그의 통일론에 대한 단면이 오롯히 담겨 있기에, 통일론과의 연관성은 매우 크다. 「판문점」에서 민족의 동질성을 고민했던 진수는「판문점2」를 통해 현재 현실주의적인 노년의 작가로 변화된다. 후일담 형식을 통해 남북의 현실이 달라졌음에 전면화한 이 소설은 통일에 유보적인 노년 진수의 시각을 역설하는 구조다. 「판문점2」는 이호철이 담지한 통일론에 대한 서사라는 점에서 가장 극적인 통일론이다. This paper provides a synchronic review of Ho - cheol Lee"s theory of unification. Ho - cheol Lee has campaigned for unification throughout his life. Moreover, he insisted on the nationalist principle of unification, and emphasized the capacity of democracy. On the other hand, he separated himself from the democratic movement during the late 1980s and identified as a unificationist, focusing on the “plan” to achieve unification. Moreover, as an alternative to unification, he insisted on establishing changes in the North Korean dictatorship and civilian exchanges. He suggested building a democratic system as a means to achieve peace in the Korean Peninsula. In particular, he proposed a new alternative by insisting on the “Hansalim unification theory.” Hocheol Lee’s theory of unification was revealed in his work Panmunjeom2. The character “Jinsoo,” who was concerned about the homogeneity of the nation in Panmunjeom(1961), is transformed into the realistic old artist “Jinsoo” through Panmunjeom2. The author expressed the changed reality of the two Koreas through the form of a sequel in Panmunjeom2, which is a novelization of his theory of unification.

        Southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone due to Northern Hemisphere cooling at the Oligocene-Miocene boundary

        <P>The Mi-1 glaciation (ca. 23 Ma), which marks the Oligocene-Miocene boundary, was an aberrant cooling event that led to a build-up of the Antarctic ice sheet, which reached the near-modern volume (or greater) from its ephemeral or partial existence. An increase of ∼1‰ in the δ<SUP>18</SUP>O of benthic foraminifera during this interval has been attributed to the development of Antarctic ice sheets and deep-water cooling. Without definitive evidence, Northern Hemisphere (NH) glaciation has not been a material consideration for the δ<SUP>18</SUP>O increase. Here we investigate the interhemispheric temperature contrast during Mi-1, with the movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) at a site (10°31′N) in the East Pacific (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1333), to understand NH cooling and the possibility of NH glaciation. The measured <SUP>143</SUP>Nd/<SUP>144</SUP>Nd, <SUP>87</SUP>Sr/<SUP>86</SUP>Sr, and clay mineral compositions of eolian dust fractions indicate unequivocally the deposition of Asian dust during Mi-1, and of Central American and South American dust before and after Mi-1. This is attributed to the southward displacement of the ITCZ over Site U1333 during Mi-1. The ITCZ shifts toward the warmer hemisphere. Thus our results suggest that the cooling during Mi-1 was more significant in the NH than in the Southern Hemisphere, which underwent a sudden expansion of continental ice sheets. Our data call for a forcing mechanism to drive significant NH cooling during this episode. Based on the available data, we propose that the widespread growth of NH ice sheets and/or changes in the production of North Atlantic–origin deep water could be possible causes of the NH cooling at that time.</P>

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Calmodulin-regulated protein phosphorylation plays a pivotal role in amplifying and diversifying the action of calcium ion. In this study, we identified a calmodulin-binding receptor-like protein kinase (CBRLK1) that was classified into an S-locus RLK family. The plasma membrane localization was determined by the localization of CBRLK1 tagged with a green fluorescence protein. Calmodulin bound specifically to a Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-dependent calmodulin binding domain in the C-terminus of CBRLK1. The bacterially expressed CBRLK1 kinase domain could autophosphorylate and phosphorylates general kinase substrates, such as myelin basic proteins.         정신분열병 환자에서 얼굴 영상의 작동기억 장애 : 기능자기공명영상연구

        Objectives : Impaired processing of facial information is one of the broad ranges of cognitive deficits seen in patients with Schi-zophrenia. We aimed to elucidate the differences in brain activities involved in the process of facial working memory between schizophrenic patients and healthy comparison subjects. Methods : Twelve patients with schizophrenia were recruited along with twelve demographically matched healthy volunteers as a comparison group. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to assess cortical activities during the Perfor-mance of a 2-back working memory paradigm using images of neutral faces as mnemonic content. Rcsults : The patient group performed the tasks with reduced accuracy. Group analysis revealed that the left fusiform gyrus, the right superior frontal gyrus, the bilateral middle frontal gyri/insula, the left middle temporal gyrus, the precuneus, the quadrangular lobules and the vermis of cerebellum showed decreased cortical activities in the patient group. On the other hand, an increased level of activation in the lateral prefrontal cortex and the pahetal lobule was observed from the patient group, all in the right hemisphere. Conulusion : A decreased level of activity in the left fusiform gyrus among the patient group implicates inefficient processing of facial information. An increased level of activation in prefrontal and parietal neural networks from the patient group confirms earlier findings on the impaired working memory of patients with schizophrenia.

        임상 검체에서 분리된 nontyphoid Salmonella에서의 integron의 빈도와 특징

        Background : Nontyphoid Salmonella (NTS) is a leading cause of human food-borne enteritis, It has been known that integron, a naturally occurring gene capture and expression element, Plays an important role in the development and dissemination of multidrug-resistance. In this study, we investigated the prevalences and molecular characteristics of integrons in NTS clinical strains. Materials and Methods : Between 1995-96 and 2000-03, a total 261 NTS clinical strains comprising 39 serotypes were collected from clinical specimens. All strains were serotyped, and the MICs of ampicillin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, and trimethoprim were determined by agar dilution method. Integrons were detected by PCR amplification of integrase genes, and gene cassettes were determined by PCR and sequencing, Conjugation experiments were performed using E. coli J53 as a recipient. The clonal relationship was analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresls (PFGE). Results : Of the 261 strains tested, class 1 integrons were present in 21 strains (8.0%). Class 2 and class 3 integrons were not found. The integron-positive rate was higher in S. Typhimurium (24.2% [8/33]) than in S. Enteritidis (2.0% [3/153]). Overall rates of antimicrobial resistance were higher in integron-positive strains. dhfr12-orfF-aadA2gene cassette was detected in 5 strains, aadA2in 4 strains, dhfr17-orfF-aadA5 in 2 strains, and addA1 in 1 strain. Ten integron-positive transconjugants were successfully selected. Among 8 integron-positive strains of S. Typhimurium, 7 had similar PFGE patterns. Conclusion: This study suggests that integrons are already playing a significant role in antimicrobial resistance in NTS. Continuous monitoring is needed to detect the emergence and spread of integron-mediated antimicrobial resistance.

        임신부의 인플루엔자 백신 접종률 및 관련요인

        Background : During seasonal influenza epidemics and previous pandemics, pregnant women have been at increased risk for complications related to influenza infection. Although influenza vaccination has been widely recommended to pregnant women and immunocompromised hosts, the vaccination rate is presumed to be low in pregnant women. This study was aimed to evaluate the vaccination rate and factors associated with Influenza vaccination among pregnant women, who are at high risk for developing complications from the influenza. Materials and Methods : This study was carried out by telephone survey from April, 2007 to August, 2007. Women who were in their second trimester of pregnancy or above,- during October, 2006 and February, 2007, the recommended vaccination period, and had given birth at Inha University Hospital were selected as the study population. Immunization status, general understanding, and factors associated with vaccination were evaluated. Results : Among a total of 506 eligible pregnant women, 227 (44.8%) responded to the questionnaires. The influenza vaccination rate among the pregnant women was only 4% (9/227). Major reasons for not receiving vaccination were first, not awaring the necessity of immunization during pregnancy (48.5%, 110/227) and second, misunderstanding that it is prohibited during pregnancy (36.1%, 82/227). The major factors that influenced the compliance of vaccination were correct understanding and doctor's recommendation on the influenza immunization during pregnancy. Conclusions : The influenza vaccine coverage on pregnant women was very low and the awareness of influenza vaccination during pregnancy in general was inaccurate. Shift in perception is required and this can be achieved by educating the pregnant women on the safety and efficacy of vaccination. In addition, doctors' active encouragement to vaccination is highly recommended.

        New polymorphic microsatellite markers in the Korean mi-iuy croaker, $Miichthys$ $miiuy$, and their application to the genetic characterization of wild and farmed populations

        Eighteen new polymorphic microsatellite markers were developed for the Korean mi-iuy croaker ($Miichthys$ $miiuy$, Perciformes, Sciaenidae), and allelic variability was compared between a wild population in Mokpo, Korea, and a hatchery population in Tongyeong, Korea. All loci were amplified readily and demonstrated allelic variability, with the number of alleles ranging from 5 to 37 in the wild population, and from 4 to 12 in the farmed population. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated, respectively, to be 0.74 and 0.78 in the hatchery population samples, and 0.79 and 0.86 in the wild samples. These results indicate lower genetic variability in the hatchery population compared with the wild population, and significant genetic differentiation between the wild population and the hatchery samples ($F_{ST}$=0.058, P<0.001). These microsatellite loci may be valuable for future population genetic studies, monitoring changes in the genetic variation within stocks in a commercial breeding program, conservation genetics, and molecular assisted selective breeding of the mi-iuy croaker in the future.
