Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

The white-spotted flower chafer, Protaetia brevitarsis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), is traditionally considered to be an important source of medicinal properties of suppression of cancer and prevention of liver-related diseases. Recently, it was listed as a temporal food ingredient by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. To use this insect species without endangering wild populations and produce better quality insects, a mass rearing technique and the suitable rearing conditions are needed. The present study was carried out to determine whether different diets and temperatures can affect the larval weight of this beetle. The larval weight change of third instar larvae was tracked for 14 weeks with different combination of three rearing temperatures – 25, 27.5, and 30℃ - and two feed ingredients – soybean cake and rice bran. Among three temperatures, 27.5℃ was the best temperature condition for rearing this beetle. Among four combinations of two feed ingredients, the addition of soybean cake made significant weight increasement for third instar larvae. These results showed that adding soybean cake at 27.5℃ was the best rearing condition for larval weight gain. This rearing condition can be considered in terms of producing better insects and maximizing producers’ benefits.
Management of Patients with Ischemic Heart Disease in Spine Surgery

In ischemic heart disease (IHD), the myocardium does not receive enough blood and oxygen. Although the IHD-related mortality rate is decreasing, the risk remains and is a major predictor of cardiac complications following noncardiac surgery. Given the increase in the older population, the number of patients with spinal diseases requiring surgery is increasing. Among these patients, those with underlying IHD or a high risk of cardiac complications before and after surgery are also increasing. Given that cardiac complications following spinal surgery are associated with delayed patient recovery and even death, spinal surgeons should be knowledgeable about overall patient management, including medication therapy in those at high risk of developing perioperative cardiac complications for successful patient care. Before surgery, the underlying medical conditions of patients should be evaluated. Patients with a history of myocardial infarction should be checked for a history of surgical treatments, and the anticoagulant dose should be controlled depending on the surgery type. In addition, the functional status of patients must be examined before surgery. Functional status can be assessed according to the metabolic equivalent of task (MET). More preoperative cardiac examinations are needed for patients who are unable to perform four METs in daily because of the high risk of postoperative cardiac complications. Patients with a history of IHD require appropriate preoperative management and further postoperative evaluation. When considering surgery, spinal surgeons should be knowledgeable about patient care before and after surgery.

Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) results from immune-mediated attacks on recipient tissues by donor-originated cells through the recognition of incompatible antigens expressed on host cells. The pre-conditioning irradiation dose is a risk factor influencing GVHD severity. In this study, using newly generated luciferase transgenic mice on a B6 background (B6.LucTg) as bone marrow and splenocyte donors, we explored the effects of irradiation doses on donor cell dynamics in major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-matched allogeneic GVHD hosts via bioluminescence imaging (BLI). Results from BLI of GVHD hosts showed higher emission intensities of luminescence signals from hosts irradiated with 900 cGy as compared with those irradiated with 400 cGy. In particular, BLI signals from target organs, such as the spleen, liver, and lung, and several different lymph nodes fluctuated with similar time kinetics soon after transplantation, reflecting the synchronous proliferation of donor cells in the different organs in hosts irradiated with 900 cGy. The kinetic curves of the BLI signals were not synchronized between the target organs and the secondary organs in hosts irradiated with 400 cGy. These results demonstrate that pre-condi-tioning doses influence the kinetics and degree of proliferation in the target organs soon after transplantation. The results from this study are the first describing donor cell dynam-ics in MHC-matched allogeneic GVHD hosts and the influence of irradiation doses on proliferation dynamics, and will provide spatiotemporal information to help understand GVHD pathophysiology.
Synthesis of Organized Mesoporous TiO_2 Thin Film and its Application to Photovoltaic Cell

The mesoporous TiO_2 thin film was synthesized by spin-coating method from C_16EO_20 as a struchure-directing agent. The mesophase was strongly affected by the solvent evaporation period, exhibiting the best stuctural integrity after 3 dauys of aging at 40℃ in open beaker. The XRD pattem and TEM image showed that a well-ordered cylindrical pore structures were formed, which can be indexed in a 2D hexagonal(ρσm) or 2D centered-rectangular cell(c2m) in the direction normal to surface. The UV/Vis. absorbance of mesostructured TiO_2 film was larger in short wavelength below 300nm than that of amorphous film Moreover the photocurent response of mesostructured TiO_2 film was larger than amorphous film which indicates that high surface area,structural regularity of mesophase, which the distinct order on mesoscopis scale(long range) of titania is affect somewhat to the photoelcctronic property as well as order on the atomic sccalc(short range).
