Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

<P>Springtime extra‐tropical cyclones (ETCs) in Northeast Asia and the associated precipitation anomalies are examined by objectively tracking ETCs from reanalysis data. The cluster analyses reveal that Northeast Asian cyclones are largely grouped into two distinct tracks, that is, north and south tracks, depending on their pathways. The south‐track ETCs typically form over southeast China and travel towards the Japanese Islands, while the north‐track ETCs are first detected around Mongolia and move southeastwards to the Korean Peninsula. Unlike the latter ones, the former ones exhibit a significant negative trend in their occurrence frequency (−1.17 per decade from 1979 to 2014), explaining a negative precipitation trend over the broad regions from southeast China to the Kyushu Islands. It is argued that the reduction of the south‐track ETCs is at least in part caused by the strengthened convection over the tropical western Pacific. The resulting Gill‐type response in the subtropics tends to drive reduced moisture supplies to southern China, likely causing an unfavourable condition for the development of the south‐track ETCs.</P>

A Saccharomyces cereuisiae Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase, PTP1, was expressed from an Escherichia coli expression system and milligram quantities of active PTP1 were purified chromatographically. The substrate specificity of the recombinant YCP1 was probed using synthetic phosphotyrosine-containing peptides corresponding to the regulatory phosphorylation sites of the yeast MAP kinase homologues Fus3_(176-186), Kss1_(179-189), and Hog1_(170-180). Peptide sequences derived from the MAP kinase homologues were chosen arbitrarily as starting points for sequence variation studies even though they are not likely to be candidates for physiological substrates of PTP1. Phosphotyrosyl-Hog1_(170-180) peptide showed a K_M value of 877 μM and phosphorylated Kss1_(179-189) and Fus3_(176-186) peptides showed lower K_M values of 74 μM and 51 μM each. To study the effect of sequence variations of the peptide, amino acids of the undecapeptide Hog1_(170-180) (DPQMTGpYVSTR) were sequentially substituted by an alanine residue. More extensive variations of each amino acid revealed positional importance of each amino acid residue. Based on these results, we derived a peptide sequence (DADEpYDA) that is recognized by PrI Pl with an affinity (K_M is 4 μM) significantly higher than that of the peptides derived from the phosphorylation sites of Fus3, Kss1, and Hog1.

Using electromagnetic shielding technology, the exterior walls of buildings can prevent the penetration of electromagnetic waves. This effectively reduces the electromagnetic field intensity and electromagnetic pulse inside buildings. Therefore, in recent years, researchers have focused on developing electromagnetic shielding technology. In this study, we analyzed the physical propertiesand EMP shielding efficiency of shielding materials, such as silicon carbide (SiC), obtained as a byproduct of the semiconductormanufacturing processes, and graphite mixed with mortar, used in the external walls. The shielding materials underwentpretreatment, such as grinding, before mixing them with mortar. Because shielding materials are expensive, the shieldingefficiency was calculated by mixing the respective shielding materials with mortar in only the outermost 10% of the samplemortar volume. Moreover, we calculated the shielding efficiency of the different samples of mortar with shielding materialsthroughout the volume of the samples using shielding effectiveness (SE) estimation formula. The predicted SE values of thesamples of mortar mixed with granular SiC, graphite powder, and SiC powder were 20 dB, 18 dB, and 28 dB, respectively. The SEof the sample of mortar mixed with SiC powder is approximately equal to 30 dB, that is, the maximum shielding efficiency (99.9%).

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We examined the electrical properties of low-temperature-processed top-gate In-Sn-Ga-O (ITGO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) by <I>rf/dc</I>-sputtering with different oxygen partial pressures (PO2). As PO2 changed from 0 to 50.0%, the ITGO TFT showed various electrical characteristics such as from conductor-like behavior to transfer curves with positive-shifted threshold voltages (<I>V</I> <I>th</I> ). The TFT at PO2 of 25.0% afforded the best performance, exhibiting field-effect mobility of 14.8 cm2V−1s−1, <I>V</I> <I>th</I> of 0.56 V, and subthreshold slope of 0.16 Vdec−1 with reasonable electrical stability for gate bias stress. From various analysis techniques, we found that the TFT characteristics and the electrical stability strongly depended on the metal-oxygen surface states of the ITGO films influenced by PO2 during the sputtering process.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Electrical properties of In–Sn-Ga-O (ITGO) thin films with different annealing temperatures. </LI> <LI> Fabrication of ITGO thin-film transistors (TFTs) by <I>rf/dc</I>-sputtering with different oxygen partial pressures (PO2). </LI> <LI> The changes of electrical characteristics of the ITGO TFTs with increasing PO2 from 0 to 50.0%. </LI> <LI> The TFT characteristics strongly depended on interface states of the ITGO films influenced by PO2. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>We investigate the effect of cell culture conditions, using pristine graphene sheets as growth substrate, on the human nerve cell line (SH-SY5Y). The cell viability and morphology were evaluated using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and caspase-3/7 activity assays, as well as fluorescence microscopy of cells stained with Hochest 33342 and Calcein AM. Human nerve cells exhibited 84% viability on pristine graphene sheets compared with control (cell culture polystyrene) after 3 days culturing. However, pristine graphene hardly induced apoptosis and allowed for 92% viability on necrosis, compared to positive control. Fluorescence data showed that the presence of graphene did not influence cell morphology. These results suggest that graphene sheets can be applied to advance tissue culture techniques for facilitating tissue repair and regeneration.</P>
