Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.
Benzoyl peroxide의 환경에서의 초기 위해성 평가

Benzoyl peroxide is a High Production Volume Chemical, which is produced about 1,375 tons/year in Korea as of 2001 survey. The substance is mainly used as initiators in polymerization, catalysts in hte plastics industry, bleaching agents for flour nad medication for acne vulgaris. In this study, quantitative Structure-Activity Relationships(QSAR) are used for getting adequate information on the physical-chemical properties of this chemical. And hydrolysis in water, acute toxicity to aquatic and terrestrial organisms for benzoyl peroxide were studied. The physical-chemical properties of benzoyl peroxide were estimated as followed; vapor pressure=0.00929 pa, Log K_(ow)=3.43, Henry's Law constant=3.54×10^(-6) atm-m³/mole at 25℃, the half-life of photodegradation=3days and bioconcentration factor(BCF)=92. Hydrolysis half-life of benzoyl peroxide in water was 5.2hr at pH 7 at 25℃ and according to the structure of this substance hydrolysis product was expected to benzoic acid. Benzoyl peroxide has toxic effects on the aquatic organisms. 72 hr-ErC_(50)(growth rate) for algae was 0.44mg/L, 48hr-EC_(50) for daphnia was 0.07mg/L and the 96hr-LC_(50) of acute toxicity to fish was 0.24mg/L. Acute toxicity to terrestrial organisms(earth worm) of benzoyl peroxide was low(14 day-LC_(50)=>1,000mg/kg). Although benzoyl peroxide is high toxic to aquatic organisms, the substance is not bioaccumulated because of the rapid removal by hydrolysis (half life=5.2hr at pH 7 at 25℃) and biodegradation(8.% by BOD after 21days). The toxicity observed is assumed to be due to benzoyl peroxide rather than benzoic acid, which shows much lower toxicity to aquatic organisms. One can assume that effects occur before hydrolysis takes place. From the acute toxicity value of algae, daphnia and fish, an assessment factor of 100 was used to determine the predicted no effect concentration(PNEC). The PNEC was calculated to be 0.7㎍/L based on the 48hr-EC_(50) daphnia(0.07mg/L). The substance shows high acute toxicity to aquatic organisms and some information indicates wide-dispersive use of this substance. So this substance is a candidate for further work, even if it hydrolysis rapidly and has a low bioaccumulation potential. This could lead to local concern for the aquatic environment and therefore environmental exposure assessment is recommended.

MCTT bioproducts have validated GMP-manufacturing facilities and provide all the necessary support for human cell based therapeutics. Our products and services were focused on bio-artificial skin, wound healing treatment for burn, vitiligo and as a center of excellence in skin physiology MCTT makes use of a variety of biological human cell based 3-D tissue model including skin, eye, lining of throat, oral mucosa models. Here, we introduce variety of in vitro human 3-D culture model and its application for alternatives.
Establishment of In Vitro Nasal Epithelial Model for Alternative Toxicity Test

Although there are strong urge to restrict the animal experiments for toxicity test, the alternative in-vitro test model or guideline is not yet been established. The present study attempted to establish the in-vitro nasal epithelial model for alternative toxicity test. Human nasal epithelial(HNE) cells were isolated by dispase II treatment, and cultured monolayer until confluent. HNE cells were harvested and seeded onto 12 mm millicell. The cells were cultured for 7 days of submerged condition and following 7 days of air-liquid interface(ALI) condition. Fully differentiated cell sheets were prepared 0.4 ?m sections, and H&E and immunohistochemical staining were compared with intact human nasal epithelium and conjunctiva. Primary cultured HNE cells showed cobblestone-like morphology without contamination with other cell types. Histological observation showed well differentiated ciliogenesis. The expressions of p63 at basal cell nucleus, CD44v6 at cell-cell junctions of basal cell layer, Na+/K+ ATPase at apical layer was observed. Also ColIV, LN5, CK3/12, CK13, CK5, MUC1, and MUC5AC were positively expressed. These results suggest that in-vitro differentiated nasal epithelial model is suitable for alternative toxicity test due to its similarity with nasal epithelium. Taken together, our nasal epithelial model will be useful for alternative toxicity test.

<P>We report the fabrication of branched beta-Ga2O3 nanowires (NWs) by a post deposition-annealing process of host beta-Ga2O3 NWs with Au catalyst seeds. The host beta-Ga2O3 NWs grown by powder sputtering were decorated by Au thin films and then annealed at temperatures greater than 800 degrees C in vacuum, oxygen, and nitrogen atmospheres. No significant morphological changes were observed in the samples annealed under the oxygen atmosphere, while the dissociation of Ga2O3 into Ga and O species occurred in the samples annealed in vacuum and nitrogen atmosphere. In the case of annealing under the nitrogen atmosphere, however, branched beta-Ga2O3 NWs were formed through a vapor-liquid-solid process with Au seeds, indicating that nitrogen atmosphere facilitates the supersaturation of Ga and O vapors into catalytic Au seeds. We observed that the photoluminescence peak intensity of branched NWs was increased by a factor of 20 compared with that of the host NWs. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the main factors of product differentiation of Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) beef over imported beef and other Korean beef and to chart the future challenges and directions of policy targeting an increase of the competitive power of domestic beef industry. The analysis is based on the monthly grade report from 2000 to 2013 on the domestic beef carcass published by the Korea Institute for Animal Product Quality Evaluation (KAPE). The hedonic approach, proposed by Rosen, was adopted as the basic analyzing tool of this paper. At the wholesale phase, the values of the characteristics that are used for beef quality grading are analyzed in order to identify differentiating factors of the beef, and these values are analyzed yearly. The result demonstrates that species and gender of beef cattle were the most deciding characteristics which determine beef price and marbling degree and maturity were the important characteristics next to them. It was found that the value of species has a decreasing trend while that of marbling degree has an increasing trend. The value of back fat layer was found to decrease as time elapses, and those of yellow colored fat and maturity further than No. 8 drop significantly. Texture value were found to increase annually. We attempt to provide several policy implications which can strengthen competitive power of the Korean beef industry based on these results.
7차 특수학교 교육과정에 따른 청각장애학교 유치부 교육과정 개발방안

본 연구는 제7차 특수학교 교육과정에 따른 청각장애학교 유치부 교육과정 편성ㆍ운영의 현황을 알아보고, 교육과정 개발전략을 모색하기 위하여 전국청각장애학교 유치부 교사 23명을 대상으로 설문조사와 질적 연구를 하였다. 그 결과 교육과정 편성 참고 자료는 ‘일반유치원 6차 교육과정’을 활용하는 것으로 나타났다. 교육과정을 편성할 때 장애유아의 특성과 흥미 등을 고려하여 교육과정을 편성하는 것으로 나타났다. 향후 교육과정 개발에 있어서는 교사들의 참여확대와 전문가 집단과의 연계체제구축, 국가수준의 장애 영역별 교과과정의 개발을 제안하였다. The study investigated the present condition of the early childhood curriculum organization and management in hearing impaired schools according to the 7th special school curriculum. It surveyed 23 early-childhood teachers in domestic hearing impaired schools to find curriculum development strategies. As a result, reference data for curriculum organization has turned out to be "the 6th Curriculum of General Kindergarten." The characteristics and interests of impaired infants is considered in organization of the curriculum. And for development of the future curriculum, the study has proposed to enlarge the participation of teachers, form connection systems with specialist groups, and develop the nation-level curriculum for each impairment field.
Value of Preoperative Pulmonary Function Test in Flaccid Neuromuscular Scoliosis Surgery

STUDY DESIGN.: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE.: To evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative pulmonary function test (PFT) for postoperative pulmonary complications and to identify the operability associated with severely decreased forced vital capacity (FVC) (<30%) status in flaccid neuromuscular scoliosis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: The preoperative PFT, especially more than 30% FVC, is known as a critical factor for the operability of flaccid neuromuscular scoliosis. But only one study reported that patients with pre-existing respiratory failure on nocturnal noninvasive ventilation can undergo an operation for deformity correction without mortality and severe complications. METHODS.: A total of 74 patients (45 male and 29 female) presented with flaccid neuromuscular scoliosis. For all patients, preoperative PFTs were evaluated and subdivided into three groups (<30% FVC, 30%–50% FVC, and >50% FVC). Then postoperative pulmonary complications, pneumothorax, pneumonia, atelectasis, prolonged ventilator care in the intensive care unit (more than 72 hours), and postoperative tracheostomy were evaluated. RESULTS.: Among these patients, 59 had muscular dystrophy; 5, spinal muscular atrophy; 2, cerebral palsy; and 8, others. The mean age at surgery was 16.8 years (range, 5–32 years). The mean preoperative Cobb angle was 54.6° (16°–135°). The overall postoperative pulmonary complication rate was 31% (23 complications in 74 patients). The less than 30% FVC group had 6 complications among 18 patients; the 30% to 50% FVC group had 7 complications among 18 patients; and the more than 50% FVC group had 10 complications among 38 patients. There were no deaths during the perioperative period. There is no statistical difference between the three groups (P = 0.6195). CONCLUSION.: Patients with flaccid neuromuscular scoliosis can undergo an operation for deformity correction regardless of the severely decreased pulmonary function.
