Control of Thermoelectric Properties through the addition of Ag in the Bi0.5 Sb1.5 Te3Alloy

In this study, the thermoelectric properties of the Ag-doped Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 compounds were investigated in the temperature range from 323 K to 573 K. Ingots were fabricated by a conventional melting process and the powder crushed from ingots was then sintered using a hot-pressing method. The temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity of the Ag-doped Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3compound are characteristic of degenerate semiconductors, which is fairly different from the conventional Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 compound. The power factor (α 2 σ) of the quaternary compound was larger than that of the ternary, which is mainly due to the increase in the electrical conductivity with doping content of Ag. The thermal conductivity was greater than that of the Ag-freeBi0.5Sb1.5Te3compound in the temperature range from 323 K to 523 K. The lattice thermal conductivity showed low values throughout the temperature range. The maximum value of the dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of the 0.05 wt. % Ag-doped compound and the ternary alloy were 1.2 at 373 K and 0.88 at 323 K, respectively. Each of the maximum peak ZT shifts to a higher temperature region with increases in the doping content of Ag. This is likely due to the control of the lattice thermal conductivity by the twin structure, which had a nano-ordered layer.

<P>A Gram-positive, aerobic, non-motile and extremely halophilic bacterial strain, designated K9(T), was isolated from kimchi, a Korean fermented food. The strain was observed as endospore-forming rod-shaped cells showing oxidase and catalase activity. It was found to grow at 10.0-30.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 15.0-20.0 %), pH 7.0-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and 15-40 A degrees C (optimum, 30 A degrees C). The polar lipids of strain K9(T) were identified as phosphatidylglycerol, three unidentified phospholipids and an unidentified glycolipid. The isoprenoid quinone was identified as menaquinone-7. The major cellular fatty acids (> 20 % of the total) were found to be anteisio-C-15:0 and anteisio-C-17:0. The cell wall peptidoglycan composition was determined to contain meso-diaminopimelic acid. The G + C content of genomic DNA was determined to be 48.2 mol %. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the isolated strain is closely related to Lentibacillus salinarum AHS-1(T) (96.7 % sequence similarity). Based on its phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain K9(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Lentibacillus, for which the name Lentibacillus kimchii sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is K9(T) (=KACC 18490(T) = JCM 30234(T)).</P>

Background and purpose: The reported overall accuracy of MRI in predicting the pathologic stage of nonirradiated rectal cancer is high. However, the role of MRI in restaging rectal tumors after neoadjuvant CRT is contentious. Thus, we evaluate the accuracy of restaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for rectal cancer patients who receive preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Methods and materials: We analyzed 150 patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (T3-4N0-2) who had received preoperative CRT. Pre-CRT MRI was performed for local tumor and nodal staging. All patients underwent restaging MRI followed by total mesorectal excision after the end of radiotherapy. The primary endpoint of the present study was to estimate the accuracy of post-CRT MRI as compared with pathologic staging. Results: Pathologic T classification matched the post-CRT MRI findings in 97 (64.7%) of 150 patients. 36 (24.0%) of 150 patients were overstaged in T classification, and the concordance degree was moderate (k=0.33, p<0.01). Pathologic N classification matched the post-CRI MRI findings in 85 (56.6%) of 150 patients. 54 (36.0%) of 150 patients were overstaged in N classification. 26 patients achieved downstaging (ycT0-2N0) on restaging MRI after CRT. 23 (88.5%) of 26 patients who had been downstaged on MRI after CRT were confirmed on the pathological staging, and the concordance degree was good (k=0.72, p<0.01). Conclusions: Restaging MRI has low accuracy for the prediction of the pathologic T and N classifications in rectal cancer patients who received preoperative CRT. The diagnostic accuracy of restaging MRI is relatively high in rectal cancer patients who achieved clinical downstaging after CRT.

Acta Neurol Scand: 2011: 123: 325–331. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.</P><P><B>Background – </B> It has not been clarified whether the disparity in ischemic stroke outcome between populations is caused by ethnic and geographic differences or by variations in case mix. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis can overcome some analytical problems but is rarely used in stroke outcome research. This study was to compare the ischemic stroke case‐fatality between two PSM cohorts of Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Methods – </B> Prognostic variables related to baseline characteristics and stroke care were included in our PSM model. Then, we selected 7675 Swedish and 1220 Korean patients with ischemic stroke from each stroke registers and performed one‐to‐one matching based on propensity scores of each patient.</P><P><B>Results – </B> After PSM, all measured variables were well balanced in 1163 matched subjects, and the 90‐day case‐fatality was identical 6.2% (HR 0.997, 95%CI 0.905–1.099) in Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Conclusions – </B> No difference is found in the 90‐day case‐fatality in propensity score‐matched Swedish and Korean patients with ischemic stroke.</P>
