In rehabilitation programs involving muscle re-education and endurance exercise, it is necessary to confirm when fatigue occurs. It is also necessary to quantify fatigue, to confirm whether the muscle has been exercised sufficiently. In general, as fatigue occurs, the force-generating ability of the muscle is reduced. If the median frequency (MDF) obtained from electromyograrn (EMG) power spectrum is correlated highly with work, then the timing and degree of fatigue may be confirmed. This study examined the relationship between work and MDF obtained from the EMG power spectrum during repetitive isokinetic exercise. Surface EMG signals were collected from biceps brachii and vastus lateralis of 52 normal subjects (26 males, 26 females) at 120˚/sec and 60˚/sec while performing an isokinetic exercise. The exercise was finished at 25% of peak work. MDF data was obtained using a moving fast Fourier transformation (FPT), and random noise was removed using the inverse FPT, then a new MDF data was obtained from the main signal. There was a high correlation between work and MDF during repetitive isokinetic exercise in the biceps brachii and vastus lateralis of males and the biceps Brachii of temales (r=.50∼.77). However, there was a low correlation between work and MDF in the vastus lateralis of females (r=.06∼.19).

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

Numerous cutting-edge studies on the advantages of nanotechnology have been conducted in the fields of food processing, food ingredients and additives, food packaging, and food engineering for optimal health. The market for these areas of research has grown steadily, and is expected to continue to do so. Because of this, R&D for nanotechnology that can be used effectively in food industries is being performed by several companies, as well as in academic research institutions around the world. This review describes the recent global R&D trends that have been in progress for two key areas: food processing and food packaging.

<P>Sipjeondaebotang (SJ) has been used as a traditional drug in east-Asian countries. In this study, to provide insight into the biological effects of SJ and SJ fermented by Lactobacillus, we investigated their effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated inflammation in macrophages. The investigation was focused on whether SJ and fermented SJ could inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandin (PG) E(2) and nitric oxide (NO) as well as the expressions of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) and nuclear factor (NF)-κB in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. We found that SJ modestly inhibited LPS-induced PGE(2), NO and TNF-α production as well as the expressions of COX-2 and iNOS. Interestingly, fermentation significantly increased its inhibitory effect on the expression of all pro-inflammatory mediators. Furthermore, fermented SJ exhibited increased inhibition of p38 MAPK and c-Jun NH(2)-terminal kinase (JNK) MAPK phosphorylation as well as NF-κB p65 translocation by reduced IκBα degradation compared with either untreated controls or unfermented SJ. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed fermentation by Lactobacillus increases liquiritigenin and cinnamyl alcohol contained in SJ, which are known for their anti-inflammatory activities. Finally, SJ fermented by Lactobacillus exerted potent anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting MAPK and NF-κB signaling in RAW 264.7 cells.</P>

<P>Repetitive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation induces various adverse effects, including skin thickening, wrinkle formation, inflammation, and pigmentation. Various natural and synthetic compounds were studied to determine whether they might prevent UV induction of these adverse effects. In particular, naturally occurring antioxidants were used for regulating skin damage induced by UV radiation since several antioxidants were found to inhibit photoaging through prevention of collagen synthesis via inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and/or decrease of melanin synthesis. The L values in pigmented skin were lower at 4 wk (52.97 +/- 2.09) than at the start of this study (0 wk, 62.89 +/- 0.56) in the control. In the proanthocyanidin mixture group, the L value was increased (56.83 +/- 1.71) similar to the control (52.97 +/- 2.09). Proanthocyanidin also suppressed the expression levels of tyrosinase by 20-40%, and blocked the expression of MITF, TRP-1, and TRP-2, which are factors implicated in the control of melanogenesis. Taken together, these data indicate that proanthocyanidin may be useful to attenuate UVB-induced melanogenesis.</P>

<P>Rho GDP dissociation inhibitor 2 (RhoGDI2) was initiallyidentifiedas a regulator of the Rho family of GTPases. Our recent works suggestthat RhoGDI2 promotes tumor growth and malignant progression, as wellas enhances chemoresistance in gastric cancer. Here, we delineatethe mechanism by which RhoGDI2 promotes gastric cancer cell invasionand chemoresistance using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE)on proteins derived from a RhoGDI2-overexpressing SNU-484 human gastriccancer cell line and control cells. Differentially expressed proteinswere identified using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flightmass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). In total, 47 differential proteinspots were identified; 33 were upregulated, and 14 were downregulatedby RhoGDI2 overexpression. Upregulation of SAE1, Cathepsin D, Cofilin1,CIAPIN1, and PAK2 proteins was validated by Western blot analysis.Loss-of-function analysis using small interference RNA (siRNA) directedagainst candidate genes reveals the need for CIAPIN1 and PAK2 in RhoGDI2-inducedcancer cell invasion and Cathepsin D and PAK2 in RhoGDI2-mediatedchemoresistance in gastric cancer cells. A Medium-Maturing, Multi-Disease Resistant and Good Eating-Quality Rice Variety "Gopumbyeo"

"Gopumbyeo" is a new japonica rice variety developed and registered by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2004, which was derived from a cross between a line SR15225-B-22-1-2 which has good eating-quality and high yield potential and a line SR15140-58-2-2-3 which has lodging and disease resistances. This variety has medium heading date of Aug. 13, medium culm length of 78 cm and tolerance to lodging. It has also relatively semi-erect pubescent leaf blades and slightly tough culm with good canopy architecture. Gopumbyeo has a bit less number of tillers per hill and more spikelets per panicle than Hwaseongbyeo. It shows less sensitivity to premature heading in delayed transplanting of 50-day old seedlings. It showed longer delay of heading date but higher spikelet fertility than Hwaseongbyeo when exposed to cold stress. This variety shows delayed leaf senescence and considerable tolerance to viviparous germination during ripening. It shows moderate resistance to leaf blast, and bacterial blight, but susceptibility to stripe virus and insect pests. The milled rice of Gopumbyeo exhibits translucent, clear non-glutinous endosperm and medium short grains. It shows similar amylose content of 19.6%, and gelatinization temperature, and better palatability of cooked rice compared to Hwaseongbyeo. The milled rice yield of this variety is about 5.48 MT/ha at ordinary culture in local adaptability test for three years. Gopumbyeo would be highly adaptable to the central lowland and mid-southern mountainous areas of Korea.
