        Background and aims: The Apolipoprotein E is a ligand of both the protein component LDL receptor as well as the apo E LDL-Receptor related protein (LRP). It modulates the receptor binding of lipoproteins, with the apolipoprotein E found on cell surfaces as its component, thus serving an important role in the lipid metabolism by carrying out the intracellular transport of cholesterol in lipoproteins. The gene for apolipoprotein E is the product of three common genotypes as well as many more rare alleles. The common genotypes are ε2, ε3, and ε4, and are expressed in the three phenotype isoforms of E2, E3, and E4. In the event that E4 is the main component, a rise in the cholesterol level, as the result of down-regulation of the LDL receptor, is observed. Therefore, those samples with E4 genotypes are known to be in much higher risk of coronary artery disease than those with ε3/ε3, while those with ε2 are in low risk (with the exception of hypertiglyceremai Ⅲ). The aim of this study is to analyze in patients with ischemic heart disease the role of aplipoprotein E alleles in order to seek its correlation with coronary artery disease, as well as to seek whether the polymorphism of apo E produces any differences in the severity of coronary artery disease according to plasma lipid levels. Methods: The subjects for study were 273 patients admitted to the Internal Cardiology Division of the Soonchunhyang University Hospital form December 1998 to February 1999. The subjects were divided into the two groups of which one was ischemic heart disease (IHD) experiment group totaling 105 (avg.60.1 years of age, male/female ratio = 69/36) and the control group totaling 168 (avg. 59.7 years of age, male/female = 73:95). The coronary angiogram was given to 127 subjects, and of this total, 94 have developed significant stenosis in the coronary artery. The stages of the analyzing of the apo E phenotype was first, the separation of DNA from the blood samples, subjecting it to the PCR from with 228 base pairs of expanded products were obtained. The band was determined by means of the reverse hybridization principle on the nitrocellulose strip. Results: From the 105 patients the distributions of apo E phenotypes were as follows: ε3/2(5.7%), ε4/2(1.9%), ε3/3(70%), ε4/3(20%), ε4/4(1.9%). The relative frequencies of each allele are as follow: ε2 (0.038), ε3 (0.833), ε4 (0.128). The results show as follows: ⅰ) The IHD experiment group to have a higher occurrence of ε4/3 phenotypes as well as ε4 alleles than the control group. ⅱ) Both the control group and IHD group showed the largest distribution of ε3/3 for phenotypes, and ε4 for alleles. ⅲ) The IHD group showed less ε2/3 phenotypes as well as significantly less allele frequency of ε3 in comparison to the control group. ⅳ) the IHD group showed a much lower level of HDL in comparison to the control group, while the LDL was significantly higher; samples including the apo ε2 showed a significantly higher level of HDL than those without. Among the control group, samples including apo ε2 showed a significantly higher level of TG (triglyceride) than samples without. No significant difference was found between the experiment apo ε4 sample and the control plasma lipid sample. ⅴ) No significant correlation was found between an apo E polynorphism and the number of involved arteries of a coronary angiogram. Conclusion: Between the experiment IHD group and control group were found differences in the frequency of alleles. The polymorphism of apo E alleles may contribute as a risk factor to the development of heart disease by involving itself in the metabolism and modulation of plasma lipids.

      • Lutembacher 증후군 환자 증례 보고

        Lutembacher's syndrome is rare combination of mitral stenosis (MS) and atrial septal defect (ASD). The hemodynamic interplay between the MS and ASD leads to wide variation of clinical presentation. Here we describe a 43-year-old female with Lutembacher's syndrome and tricuspid regurgitation with pulmonary hypertension, who underwent direct closure of ASD and tricuspid valvuloplasty successfully. We also reviewed other literatures in an effort to increase awareness of this condition.

        Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Strongyloides stercoralis which exists in two forms : the free living and parasitic forms. It exists in warm, moist climate in areas where there is frequent fecal contamination of the soil. After cutaneous invasion by the filariform larvae, petechial hemorrage, pruritus, papular rashes, edema, and urticaria occur. Infection commonly occurs in the proximal intestine of the gastrointestinal (G-I) tract but may extend from the stomach to the anus. Once the worm is established in the small intestine, the physical findings may include epigastric tenderness to palpation. The mucosal biopsy is an inefficient way of making the diagnosis because the worm is found in the biopsy specimen in only 2% of patients. Gastric strongyloidiasis is rare. We experienced a case of gastric strongyloidiasis diagnosed by the endoscopic biopsy and serologic test for parasite specific IgG antibody by micro-ELISA.

        CD4+/CD8+ Ratio and Growth Differentiation Factor 8 Levels in Peripheral Blood of Large Canine Males Are Useful Parameters to Build an Age Prediction Model

        Purpose:Purpose: To build an age prediction model, we measured CD4+ and CD8+ cells, and humoral components in canine periph-eral blood. Materials and Methods:Materials and Methods: Large Belgian Malinois (BGM) and German Shepherd Dog (GSD) breeds (n=27), aged from 1 to 12 years, were used for this study. Peripheral bloods were obtained by venepuncture, then plasma and peripheral blood mono-nuclear cells (PBMCs) were separated immediately. Six myokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-15, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), growth differentiation factor 8 (GDF8), and GDF11 were measured from plasma and CD4+/CD8+ T-lymphocytes ratio were measured from PBMC. These parameters were then tested with age prediction models to find the best fit model. Results:Results: we found that the T-lymphocyte ratio (CD4+/CD8+) was significantly correlated with age (r=0.46, p=0.016). Among the six myokines, only GDF8 showed a significant correlation with age (r=0.52, p=0.005). Interestingly, these two markers showed better correlations in male dogs than females, and BGM breed than GSD. Using these two age biomarkers, we could obtain the best fit in a quadratic linear mixed model (r=0.77, p=3×10-6). Conclusions:Conclusions: Age prediction is a challenging task because of complication with biological age. Our quadratic linear mixed model using CD4+/CD8+ ratio and GDF8 level showed a meaningful age prediction.

      • Ignition characteristics of laser-ablated aluminum at shock pressures up to 2 GPa

        The ignition of aluminum particles under high pressure and temperature conditions is considered. The laser ablation method is used to generate oxide-free aluminum particles exposed to pressures ranging between 0.35 and 2.2GPa. A continuous wave CO2 laser radiation heats the surface of the aluminum target until ignition is observed. We confirm ignition by a spectroscopic analysis of AlO vibronic band of 484 nm wavelength, and the radiant temperature is measured with respect to various pressures for estimating the heating energy for ignition. The ignition characteristics of the oxide-free aluminum particles exposed to extremely high pressures are reported. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

        간암 환자의 술전 검사로서 CTAP와 CTHA 의 유용성

        Background / Aims : Combined computed tomography during arterial portography(CTAP) and computed tomography during hepatic arteriography(CTHA) are more sensitive methods compared to conventional spiral CT in detection small hepatocellular carcinoma. However, there are few data available on the influence of combined CTAP and CTHA on decision making for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to evaluate the usefulness of CTAP and CTHA as a preoperative study of hepatocellular carcinoma for surgical treatment. Methods : Eighty -two patients with histologically proven hepatocellular carcinoma who were considered to be surgical candidates on spiral CT and angigraphy were included. CTAP and CTHA were performed as the routine protocol. The findings of CTAP and CTHA were analyzed and compared to conventional spiral CT and angiography. Results : 1)105 nodules were found on spiral CT plus angiography , whereas, 138 nodules found on combined CTAP and CTHA : 33 additional nodules were found in 23 cases(28%). 2) The treatment plan changed from surgery to nonsurgical treatment in 10(12%) cases : 9 cases(10%) with bilobar involvement, and 1 case(1%) with more than three nodules. 3) The larger the tumor nodules on the spiral CT, the more additional tumor nodules were found on CTAP and CTHA : combined CTAP and CTHA were able to find more nodules in 21% of tumor ≤3cm, 27% of tumor with 3- 10cm, and 71% of tumor > 10 am on spiral CT (p=0.03). Conclusion : Compared to spiral CT plus angiography, CTAP and CTHA may be useful in avoiding unnecessary operation of hepatocellular carcinoma, especially in large tumors.

        기상요소에 따른 부산지역 계절별 교통사고 변화와 예측에 관한 연구

        The traffic accidents in large cities such as Pusan metropolitan city have been increased every year due to increasing of vehicles numbers as well as the gravitation of the population. In addition to the carelessness of drivers, many meteorological factors have a great influence on the traffic accidents. Especially, the number of traffic accidents is governed by precipitation, visibility, humidity, cloud amounts and temperature, etc. In this study, we have analyzed various data of meteorological factors from 1992 to 1997 and determined the standardized values for contributing to each traffic accident. Using the relationship between meteorological factors(visibility, precipitation, relative humidity and cloud amounts) and the total automobile mishaps, an experimental prediction formula for their traffic accident rates was seasonally obtained at Pusan city in 1997. Therefore, these prediction formulas at each meteorological factor may be used to predict the seasonal traffic accident numbers and contributed to estimate the variation of its value according to the weather condition in Pusan city.

        백서의 척수에서 GABAB 수용체의 심혈관 조절 작용

        Objectives : The purpose of present study is to investigate the influence of a spinal gamma-aminobutyric acid B (GABAB) receptor on a central regulation of blood pressure(BP) and heart rate(HR), and to define its mechanism in the spinal cord. Methods : In urethane-anesthetized, d-tubocurarine- paralyzed and artificially ventilated male Sprague-Dawley rats, intrathecal administration of drugs were carried out using injecton cannula(33-gauge stainless steel) through the guide cannula(PE 10) which was inserted intrathecally at lower thoracic level through the puncture of a atlantooccipital membrane. Results : Intrathecal injection of an GABAB receptor agonist baclofen(30, 60, 100 nmol) decreased both blood pressure and heart rate dose-dependently. Pretreatment with 8-bromo-cAMP(50 nmol), a cAMP analog or glipizide(50 nmol), a ATP-sensitive K+ channel blocker attenuated the depressor and bradycardic effects of baclofen (100 nmol) but not with 8-bromo-cGMP(50 nmol) a cGMP analog. Conclusions : The GABAB receptor in the spinal cord plays an inhibitory role in central cardiovascular regulation and that this depressor and bradycardic actions are mediated by the decrease of cAMP via the inhibition of adenylate cyclase and the opening of K+ channel.

        Quality Prediction of Kiwifruit Based on Near Infrared Spectroscopy

        To establish the standard of ripe kiwifruit sorting, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was performed on kiwifruit sampled from three farms. Destructive measurements of flesh firmness, soluble solids content (SSC), and acidity were performed and compared to measurement using NIR reflectance spectrums from 408 to 2,492 nm. NIR predictions of those quality factors were calculated using the modified partial least square regression method. Flesh firmness was predicted with a standard error of prediction (SEP) of 3.32 N and with a correlation coefficient ($R^2$) of 0.88. SSC was predicted with SEP of $0.49^{\circ}Brix$ and with $R^2$ of 0.98. Acidity was predicted with SEP of 0.28% and with $R^2$ of 0.91. Kiwifruit ripened at $20^{\circ}C$ for 15 days showed uneven qualities with normal distribution. Considering the SEP of each parameter, kiwifruit after ripening treatment could be non-destructively predicted their qualities and sorted by flesh firmness or soluble solids content through NIR prediction.

        1SWASP J093010.78+533859.5: A POSSIBLE HIERARCHICAL QUINTUPLE SYSTEM

        <P>Among quadruples or higher multiplicity stars, only a few doubly eclipsing binary systems have been discovered. They are important targets for understanding the formation and evolution of multiple stellar systems because we can obtain accurate stellar parameters from photometric and spectroscopic studies. We present the observational results of this kind of rare object, 1SWASP J093010.78+533859.5, for which the doubly eclipsing feature had been detected previously from the SuperWASP photometric archive. Individual point-spread function photometry for two objects with a separation of about 1.''9 was performed for the first time in this study. Our time-series photometric data confirms the finding of Lohr et al. that the bright object A is an Algol-type detached eclipsing binary and the fainter B is a W UMa-type contact eclipsing. Using high-resolution optical spectra, we obtained well-defined radial velocity variations of system A. Furthermore, stationary spectral lines were detected that must have originated from a further, previously unrecognized stellar component. It was confirmed by the third object contribution from the light-curve analysis. No spectral feature of system B was detected, probably due to motion blur by long exposure times. We obtained the binary parameters and the absolute dimensions of systems A and B from light-curve synthesis with and without radial velocities, respectively. The primary and secondary components of system A have a spectral type of K1 and K5 main sequences, respectively. Two components of system B have nearly the same type of K3 main sequence. Light variations for both binaries are satisfactorily modeled by using two-spot models with one starspot on each component. We estimated the distances to systems A and B individually. Two systems may have similar distances of about 70 pc and seem to be gravitationally bound with a separation of about 130 AU. In conclusion, we suggest that 1SWASP J093010.78+533859.5 is a quintuple stellar system with a hierarchical structure of a triple system A(ab)c and a binary system B(ab).</P>
