        A 10-year-old, male, poodle dog was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University because of continuous cough and cardiomegaly. Weight gain, lethargy, unwillingness to exercise and decreased activity was revealed on history. Obesty and alopecia was also observed on physical examination. Hypercholesterolemia and increased ALP was revealed on blood exam. So, evaluation of thyroid gland function was performed and cTSH concentration was increased. tT4 and fT4 concentrations was decreased. Results of a history, physical examination, blood exam, and thyroid gland fuction test support a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. Initial therapy with sodium levothyroxine was indicated. On 32 days after treatment of hypothyroidism, clinical signs was relieved and cTSH concentration was decreased, tT4 and fT4 concenctrations was increased.

        Objectives : Acupuncture is expected to have somewhat like the efficacy parallel increasing activity of immune system in Western modern medicine. There, already, are many animal researches on activating effect of acupuncture for the immune system in peripheral organs. So, we carried out this experiment to see whether acupuncture has controlling effect on interleukin-6(IL-6) activity in rat's brain. Methods and Results : We had topical application of IL-6(1U-1pg, 10㎕) on brain of rat. It reduced afferent sensory transmission to the primary somatosensory(SI) cortex from periphery. Whereas, electrical stimulation(ES, 2Hz, 1.5V, 15min) of ST36(足三里) with application of IL-6 prominently activated afferent sensory transmission. ES of non-acupoint(proximal tail) with IL-6 showed suppression of afferent transmission. ES of ST36 without IL-6 application also exerted facilitation of afferent transmission to the SI cortex. Conclusions : Electoacupuncture(EA) on ST36 has noticeable influences on modulating activation of IL-6 in central nervous system, which do major role in immune system.

        알록산 투여로 유발된 실험적 당뇨병에 대한 사인추출물의 치료 효과

        연구배경:사인추출물이 알록산에 의한 당뇨 유발을 억제하는 효과가 있음을 이미 확인하였던 바 사인 추출물이 췌장 베타세포가 손상되어 유발된 당뇨병의 치료에 사용할 수 있는지의 가능성을 알아보았다. 방법:실험적 당뇨는 알록산(60㎎/㎏)을 생쥐 꼬리 정맥을 통해 주사하여 유발시켰다. 당뇨에 미치는 사인추출물의 영향을 관찰하기 위하여 사인추출물의 영향을 관찰하기 위하여 사인추출물(2.5㎎/생쥐)을 하루에 두 번 생쥐 복강 내로 투여하였다. 당뇨에 미치는 사인추출물의 영향을 관찰하기 위하여 생쥐에 사인추출물을 처리한 다음 혈당 및 혈청 인슐린 농도 변화 및 조직학적인 소견으로 확인하였다. 결과:생쥐에 알록산을 투여하면 췌장 베타세포가 파괴되어 고혈당 및 hypoinsulinemia가 유발되었다. 사인추출물을 알록산 투여 전 2일 동안 전처리하면 알록산에 의한 고혈당이 완전히 억제되었다. 뿐만 아니라 알록산에 의해 유발된 췌장 베타세포의 손상은 사인추출물의 투여로 현저히 개선되어 혈당 및 혈청 인슐린 농도가 거의 정상 수준으로 회복되었다. 알록산을 투여한 생쥐의 췌장 소도는 정상군에 비해 수가 현저히 감소되었을 뿐 아니라 남아있는 소도의 크기도 현저히 줄어들어 있었으나, 사인추출물을 처리하면 모두 회복되어 정상군과 유사한 양상을 보였다. 결론:사인추출물은 알록산에 의해 유발되는 당뇨병을 억제하는 방어 작용 뿐만 아니라, 알록산 투여로 이미 손상된 췌장 베타세포를 개선시킬 수 있는 치료 효과작용도 가지고 있음을 확인하였다. 이를 토대로 사인의 당뇨 개선 기전을 규명하면 당뇨병 치료제로서 이용할 수 있으리라 사료된다. Background : During the screening of natural products for potential antidiabetogenic components, a strong protective effect of Amomum xanthoides extract on alloxan-induced β-cell damage and in a mice diabetic model. In this study, the therapeutic effect of Amomum xanthoides extract was investigated after induction of diabetes by alloxan. Methods : Experimental diabetes was induced by the injection of alloxan(60mg/kg) to the mouse via the tail vein. To examine the effect the of Amomum xanthoides extract on diabetes, Amomum xanthoides extract (2.5mg/mouse) was admini-strated intraperitoneally. The effect of the Amomum xanthoides extract on alloxan-induced diabetes was observed by measuring the blood glucose and serum insulin level, and a histological examination. Results : Alloxan caused hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia by a selectively destroying pancreatic β-cell. Pretreating the with an Amoumum xanthoides extract completely protected them from the hyperglycemia induced by alloxan. In addition, the Amomum xanthoides extract administe 3 days after the of alloxan injection significantly abolished the hyperglycemia and hypoinsulinemia induced by alloxan. The alloxan-treated mice showed a marked change of in the pancreatic islets: the number of islets was reduced and the size of the remaining islets also decreased. However these effects of alloxan were significantly recovered by a later administration of the Amomum xanthoides extract. Conclusion : The amomum xanthoides extract contains potentially effective components, which both protect and treat alloxan-induced diabetes. The identification and action mechanism of the effective components of the Amomum xanthoides extract requires further investigation and it is suggested that the Amomum xanthoides extract be used as a therapeutic drug for diabetes(J Kor Diabetes 26:126~133, 2002).

      • KS H ISO 1242 표준의 평가 : 라반딘 정유의 산값 측정

        The acid value (AV) as well as the ester value of essential oil is an important index to evaluate quality of essential oil. The official standard analytical method of KS H ISO 1242 dealing with “Essential oils - Determination of acid value” was assessed experimentally using two lavandin essential oils obtained in France as an example. One French lavandin oil sample showed the results of AV= 0.9 by both indicator method and potentiometry. Another sample showed AV = 1.9 by indicator method and AV = 1.6 by potentiometry. Latter lavandin oil sample exhibited significantly higher acid value than maximum value of 1 described in the standard. This result suggests that latter lavandin oil was contaminated, because this oil was contained in an orange juice bottle. Results of this study proved that KS H ISO 1242 could be used as a suitable scientific standard for the determination of acid value of essential oils.

        Inhibitory Effect of Clavicepitaceae on Serotonin Release out of Human Platelets and Human Platelet Aggregation

        We have investigated the effects of hypha-water extracts (HWE), fruit body-water extracts (FWE) and cordycepin from Cordyceps militaris on serotonin release out of human platelets and human platelet aggregation. HWE and FWE inhibited the release of [^(3)H]-serotonin from human platelet stimulated by thrombin (2 U/ml) or collagen (20 ㎍/ml) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, cordycepin, a major component of Cordyceps militaris, inhibited the human platelet aggregation induced by collagen (10 ㎍/ml) in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that cordycepin containing in HWE and FWE may inhibit the serotonin release by suppressing the collagen-induced human platelet aggregation. Accordingly, our data demonstrate that HWE and FWE containing much cordycepin might have antithrombotic and antimigrainous functions.

      • 제2형 당뇨병 환자에서 적극적 환자 교육이 혈당조절에 미치는 효과

        연구배경: 현재까지의 당뇨병 교육에 대한 노력은 제한되었으며, 연구 결과를 보면 식사 조절 교육과 체중 조절 프로그램을 수행한 환자들 중 적극적이고 기간이 긴 교육을 받은 경우, 성공적 결과가 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 자가관리나 체중감량 등의 당뇨병 치료의 중요한 목표는 적극적이고 긴 기간의 교육 없이는 시행되기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 외래에서 당뇨병 환자를 대상으로 시행할 수 있는 행동 및 식사 교육 등의 적극적 교육 프로그램을 개발하여 제2형 당뇨병 환자들을 대상으로 이들에게 식사 조절 방법에 대한 목표설정과 문제에 직면하였을 때의 해결 방법 등을 교육해서 궁극적으로는 적극적 자아관리에 연결될 수 있도록 도와주는 것을 목적으로 기존의 통상적 교육과 보다 적극적인 교육이 당뇨병 환자의 혈당 조절에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대해 알아보기 위해 다음과 같은 연구를 시행하였다. 방법: 본 연구는 아주대학교 병원 내분비 대사 내과를 처음으로 방문하여 치료받았던 58명의 제2형 당뇨병 환자를 대상으로 하였다. 내원 환자들을 무작위하게 추출하여 진찰권 번호 끝자리에 따라 홀수는 통상적 교육군(conventional education group, CE)과 짝수는 적극적 교육군(intensive education group, IE)으로 나누어 교육하고, 3개월후에 교육의 효과를 평가하였다. 결과: 1) 연구 대상자들의 교육 전과 후의 공복혈당, 식후2시간 혈당 및 HbA_lc 치는 IE군과 CE군 모두 각 그룹 내에서, 유의적으로 감소하였다(p<0.05). IE군에서는 공복혈당이 12.4nmol/L에서 7.7nmol/L로, 식후2시간 혈당이 20.3nmol/L에서 10.9nmol/L으로, HbA_lc치가 9.4%에서 7.0%로 모두 교육 전에 비하여, 교육 후에 감소(p<0.05)하였고, CE군도 공복혈당은 10.9nmol/L에서 9.4nmol/L로, 식후2시간 혈당은 17.1nmol/L에서 14.6nmol/L으로 HbA_lc가 8.5%에서 7.3%으로 모두 교육 후에 감소하였다(p<0.05). 또한, 교육 전에 비하여 교육 후에 공복 혈당 및 HbA_lc치가 감소하는 정도는 IE군에서의 감소가 CE군에 비해 더 현저하였다Op<0.05). 2) 식사에 대한 태도는 3부분으로 나누어 식사에 대한 규칙성, 식사 내용의 균형성, 식사에 대한 태도 등으로 나누어 각각의 점수 및 총점을 비교하였으며 교육 전에 비해 교육 후에 연구 대상자들의 식태도가 향상되었음을 알 수 있었다. 두 그룹간의 차이를 분석한 결과 식사의 균형성 항목에서와 총점에서 유의적으로 두 그룹의 차이를 보여서 IE군에 CE군에 비해 식사의 균형성 측면이 향상되었고, 전체적인 식태도가 좋아졌음을 알 수 있었다(p<0.05). 결론: 비교적 긴 기간은 아니지만 적극적 교육을 받은 당뇨병 환자들이 통상적 교육을 받은 군보다 혈당 및 HbA_lc, 식태도 점수등의 수치의 호전뿐만 아니라 당뇨병 환자의 삶에서 중요한 부분을 차지하는 식사요법 관리 부분에 있어 향상됨을 알 수 있었다. Background: To this date, efforts to develop effective methods for the education of diabetic patients have been limited. The important goal of self-management and weight control for diabetic treatment can not be attained without long and intensive period of education. This study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of an intensive educational program, of behavior and diet control, which was carried out on subjects with type 2 diabetes, on and out-patient basis. we compared the effectiveness of an intensive education programme with that of a conventional education programme for the self-management of type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: Subjects with type 2 diabetes were randomly selected, and allocated to one of two groups. One group received a conventional education programme of self-management(the CE group), and the second group received an intensive education progammes for three months, after which the effectiveness of the programmes were evaluate. Results: 1) The levels of fasting blood sugar(FBS), postprandial 2 hour blood sugar(PP2h) and HbA1c were significantly lowered in both groups following the intervention(p<0.05). In the IE group, the FBS declined from 12.4nmol/L to 7.7nmol/L, PP2h declined from 20.3nmol/L to 10.9nmol/L, and the HbA_lc showed a similar decline from 9.4 to 7.0% after intervention(p<0.05). In the Ce group, the FBS declined from 10.9 to 9.4nmol/l, the PP2h decreased from 17.1 to 14.6nmol/l, and the HbA_lc also decreased from 8.5 to 7.3% after intervention(p<0.05). The decrease in the FBS and HbA_lc following the educational intervention was more pronounced in the IE group than the CE group(p<0.05). 2) The effectiveness of the education programmes in promoting appropriate dietary behavior in the diabetic subjects was assessed by a scoring system in three parts: a regularity score, a balance score and an attitude score. From a comparative study of the three scores, the patients attitudes were observed to be much improved in both the groups following the intervention compared to before the programmes, but the balance and total scores were significantly higher in the IE group than the CE group(p<0.05). Conclusion: We can conclude that the intensive diabetic education programme is more effective than a conventional programme, not only in improving the patients' levels of glucose, HbA_lc, and dietary score, but also the diabetic patients self-control abilities, promoting behavioral change, and prompting problem solving capabilities in respect to the everyday problems that they have to face throughout their lives(J Kor Soc Endocrinol 18:63∼72, 2003).

        <P>A general synthesis of dibenzoxepine lactams has been developed using a one-pot Cu-catalyzed etherification/aldol condensation cascade reaction.       • Activation of Anthocyanin Biosynthesis by Expression of the Radish R2R3 MYB Transcription Factor gene RsMYB1

        Anthocyanins, providing the bright red-orange to blue-violet colors, flavonoid-derived pigments with strong antioxidant activity that have benefits for human health. We isolated RsMYB1, which encodes an R2R3 MYB transcription factor (TF), from red radish plants (Raphanus sativus L.) that accumulate high levels of anthocyanins. RsMYB1 shows higher expression in red radish than in common white radish, in both leaves and roots, at different growth stages. regulatory genes. Transient expression of RsMYB1 in tobacco showed that RsMYB1 is a positive regulator of anthocyanin production. Also, the synergistic effect of RsMYB1 with B-Peru was larger than the effect of Arabidopsis plants stably expressing RsMYB1 produced red pigmentation throughout the plant, accompanied by up-regulation of the six structural and two regulatory genes for anthocyanin production. This broad transcriptional activation of anthocyanin biosynthetic machinery in Arabidopsis included up-regulation of TRANSPARENT TESTA 8, which encodes a bHLH-type TF. These results suggest that overexpression of RsMYB1 promotes anthocyanin production by triggering the expression of endogenous bHLH genes as potential binding partners for RsMYB1. In addition, RsMYB1-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants had a higher antioxidant capacity than did non-transgenic control plants. Taken together, RsMYB1 is an actively positive regulator for anthocyanins biosynthesis in radish plants and it might be one of the best targets for anthocyanin production by single gene manipulation being applicable in diverse plant species.
