Wireless pressure sensor integrated with a 3D printed polymer stent for smart health monitoring

        Park, Jongsung,Kim, Ji-Kwan,Kim, Dong-Su,Shanmugasundaram, Arunkumar,Park, Su A,Kang, Sohi,Kim, Sung-Ho,Jeong, Myung Ho,Lee, Dong-Weon Elsevier 2019 Sensors and actuators. B Chemical Vol.280 No.-

Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to deploy a promising wireless pressure sensor system capable of monitoring real-time biological signals in an experimental object. MEMS-based micromachining technology was used to fabricate the proposed SU-8 wireless pressure sensor. The sensor utilizes a capacitor-inductor resonant circuit that can operate the sensor without any external power supply. The variable capacitor in the pressure sensor is designed to change the resonance frequency (130, 183 MHz) in response to applied pressure. The fabricated wireless pressure sensor was integrated into a polymer-based smart stent to minimize the discomfort of medication administration and hospital visits. A 3D bio-printing-based manufacturing technique was employed for the production of a smart polymer stent with complicated shapes. The proposed method is considerably more comfortable than the conventional metal stents fabrication process. The polymer smart stent made of the biocompatible polycaprolactone (PCL) material which can be fully absorbed by the body after a medication period. After integrating the fabricated wireless pressure sensor with the polymer smart stent, various basic experiments such as the working distance of the sensor were performed using a simple experimental setup. The biocompatibility of the proposed polymer stent and the wireless pressure sensor was also successfully confirmed using an experimental animal. The preliminary investigation results indicate that the proposed wireless sensor can be used to obtain necessary information in various parts of the human body as well as the stent.

Highlights

Fabrication of SU-8 based wireless pressure sensor for battery-less operation.

Manufacturing of biodegradable polymer stent using 3D printing technique.

Integration of wireless pressure sensor into polymer stent for real-time blood pressure monitoring.

Verification of the biocompatibility of smart stent and its operation with experimental animals.

Continuous measurement of blood pressure change in animals for more than 3 months.

Multiplex PCR Detection for 3 Events of Genetically Modified Maize, DAS-59122-7, TC6275, and MIR604

        Ji-Hye Ahn,Jae-Hwan Kim,Su-Youn Kim,Woo-Young Lee,Sun-Hee Park,Hae-Yeong Kim 한국식품과학회 2008 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.17 No.3

A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was developed to simultaneously detect 3 events of genetically modified (GM) maize. The event-specific primers were used to discriminate the following 3 events of GM maize (DAS-59122-7, TC6275, and MIR604) using multiplex PCR method. The zein gene was used as an endogenous maize reference gene in the multiplex PCR detection. The primer pair Zein-F/R producing a 99 bp amplicon was used to amplify the zein gene. The primer JI-Das-F1/R1 for DAS-59122-7, JI-TC6275-F3/R3 for TC6275, and JI-MIR F1/R1 for MIR604 yielded an amplicon of 130, 162, and 197 bp, respectively. The detection limit of multiplex PCR was 1% for DAS-59122-7, TC6275, and MIR604 for one reaction.

We reported a case of pancreatic pseudoaneurysm, involving pancreaticoduodenal artery, developed after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) with endoscopic sphinterotomy. A 54 year old woman was transferred to our hospital due to sustained hematochezia and hypovolemia. A week before admission, she underwent ERCP with endoscopic sphinterotomy for acute cholangitis in local clinics. She developed abdominal pain and hematochezia at 12 hours after the procedures. A post procedure contrast enhanced computed tomography of abdomen demonstrated a pseudoaneurysm in inferior portion of pancreatic head. This was not present on the pre procedure contrast enhanced computed tomography of abdomen and was thought to arise from the pancreaticoduodenal artery as a complication of the pre sphincterotomy. She was brought to our emergency room in a state of hypovolemia. A upper endoscopy showed active bleeding from ampula of vater. An celiac angiography demonstrated pancreatic pseudoaneurysm involving inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery and selective coil embolization of was performed.

3,4‑Dichloroaniline promotes fatty liver in zebrafish larvae

        Ji‑Seon Park,송정아,Jong‑Su Park,이상우,Jieon Lee,Han‑Jin Park,Woo‑Keun Kim,Seokjoo Yoon,Hang‑Suk Chun 대한독성 유전단백체 학회 2020 Molecular & cellular toxicology Vol.16 No.2

Backgrounds 3,4-Dichloroaniline (3,4-DCA) is a transformation product of herbicides that is commonly used as a reference in developmental toxicity studies (OECD TG 236) (Bonnet et al. in Environ Toxicol 22:78–91, 2007). However, the mechanisms underlying 3,4-DCA-induced hepatotoxicity are not well known. Methods We exposed zebrafish larvae at 72 hpf to 3,4-DCA for 3 days and observed lipid accumulation in liver treated with 10-μM 3,4-DCA using oil red O staining. Subsequently, we performed qRT-PCR analysis to determine the genes involved in the observed lipid accumulation. Results We found that genes related to lipogenesis (srebp1, pparγ, lipin1, and scd1) and ER stress (bip, atf4, ddit3, dnajc3, and edem1) were significantly upregulated. In addition, we found that ROS generation increased in the larvae treated with 10-μM 3,4-DCA. Moreover, glutathione-S-transferase activity in these larvae was increased by 3,4-DCA in a dose-dependent manner, and the expression of the inflammation marker il-1β increased. Conclusion Our results indicated that exposure to 3,4-DCA induced fatty liver in zebrafish larvae and that this, in association with additional factors such as ER stress response, can promote liver damage. We accordingly suggest that 3,4-DCA could be used to induce fatty liver in zebrafish larvae.

      • Elevated TRAF2/6 expression in Parkinson's disease is caused by the loss of Parkin E3 ligase activity.

        Chung, Ji-Yun,Park, Hee Ra,Lee, Su-Jin,Lee, Sun-Hye,Kim, Jin Sik,Jung, Youn-Sang,Hwang, Sang Hyun,Ha, Nam-Chul,Seol, Won-Gi,Lee, Jaewon,Park, Bum-Joon United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology [e 2013 Laboratory investigation Vol.93 No.6

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second leading neurodegenerative disease, and is known to be induced by environmental factors or genetic mutations. Among the verified genetic mutations of PD, Parkin, isolated from the PARK2 locus, shows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern and is known to be an E3 ligase. However, the physiological target of Parkin and the molecular mechanism of Parkin-deficiency-induced PD have not been clearly demonstrated until now. It has recently been proposed that inflammation, suggesting as a causal factor for PD, is enhanced by Parkin deficiency. Thus, we examined the relationship between inflammation-related factors and Parkin. Here, we provide the evidence that Parkin suppresses inflammation and cytokine-induced cell death by promoting the proteasomal degradation of TRAF2/6 (TNF-α receptor-associated factor 2/6). Overexpression of Parkin can reduce the half-lives of TRAF2 and TRAF6, whereas si-Parkin can extend them. However, mutant Parkins did not alter the expression of TRAF2/6. Thus, loss of Parkin enhances sensitivity to TNF-α- or IL-1β-induced JNK activation and NF-κB activation. Indeed, si-Parkin-induced apoptosis is suppressed by the knockdown of TRAF6 or TRAF2. We also observed elevated expression levels of TRAF6 and a reduction of IκB in an 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced PD mouse model. Moreover, elevated expression levels or aggregation of TRAF6 were detected in approximately half of the human PD tissues (7/15 cases) and 2 cases, respectively. In addition, TRAF6 and Parkin expression levels show a reverse relationship in human PD tissues. Our results strongly suggest that the reduction of Parkin or overexpression of TRAF2/6 by chronic inflammation would be the reason for occurrence of PD.

The aim of this article is to improve human health and that of companion animals by improving the diagnosis and control of parasitic diseases. This is achieved by research into parasites of veterinary significance including zoonoses and the use of comparative systems to increase our understanding of some human parasitic diseases. We should promotes learning and teaching through knowledge and operates a diagnostic unit that offers a service to pet owner for indigenous and exotic parasitic diseases of companion animals. We must diagnose and treat them early. Zoonotic parasites are very important because many of animal parasites are zoonoses and give pain and death to human. Parasites are divided Protozoa, Helminthes and Arthropods. There are many protozoa, about 65,000 species. Arthropods are the vector of another diseases, such as virus, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes. Helminthes are composed of Trematoda, Cestoda, Nematoda and Acanthocephala. The target of Veterinary Parasitology is to recognize the characteristics of these parasites and subsequently diagnose, treat and control them. This article is intended to familiarize you with the essential facts and concepts of companion animal parasitology. Emphasis is placed on fecal sample techniques (comparison of fecal examination techniques; frequently found artifacts in fecal smears; direct Smear; zinc sulfate flotation; etc.) We recommend that the study be done to more references on animal parasites.

In Vitro Antiviral Activity of Ribavirin Against Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus Myung Jin LEE1, Kye-Hyung KIM1, Jongyoun YI2, SuJin CHOI1, Chung-Jong KIM1, Nak- Hyun KIM1, Kyoung-Ho SONG1, Pyoeng Gyun CHOI1, Ji-Hwan BANG1, Wan Beom PARK1, Eu Suk KIM1, Sang-Won PARK1, Hong Bin KIM1, Nam Joong KIM1, Myoung- Don OH1 Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea1, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Korea2 Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel Bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). No effective antiviral therapy is proven yet, but clinical use of ribavirin (RBV) has been tried. We investigated the antiviral effect of RBV against SFTSV in vitro. Methods: To test for cytotoxicity of RBV, Vero cells were treated with different concentrations of RBV (3.90 to 500 μg/mL, two-fold dilution) and analyzed by cell viability MTS assay 48h post-infection. To determine antiviral activity of RBV against SFTSV, Vero cells were infected with SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 at 100 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) per well in a 96-well plate, and RBV was added at the concentrations showing no or minimal cytotoxicity. Viral RNAs were extracted from the culture supernatants and quantifi ed using one-step real-time reverse transcription- PCR to amplify the partial large segment of SFTSV. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA with Tukey`s post hoc test. Results: Cytotoxicity due to RBV was not observed at RBV concentration =31.3 μg/ mL. Viral RNAs at 24h post-RBV treatment were reduced with increasing RBV concentrations (1-32 μg/mL), compared with those of mock-treated cells (P <0.01, Figure). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RBV was 3.69 μg/mL at 24h post-RBV treatment. Conclusions: Our study shows that RBV has antiviral effect against SFTSV in a dose-dependent manner. Further studies are required to evaluate the effi cacy of RBV in SFTS.

Objectives : Cinnamomi Ramulus (CR), the young twing of Cinnamomi loureirii nees, has been used for treating symptoms related to pain. rheumatic arthritis and inflammation in Korean herb medicine. This study was carried out to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of CR in vivo and in vitro. Methods : Extracts of CR were prepared and the chemical components of the extracts were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The extracts were administrated to the rat paw edema model induced by carrageenan to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of CR. The expressions of nitric oxide (NO). prostaglandin E2(PGE2), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 were also quantified in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages to survey the effect of CR in vitro. The main components were cinnamaldechyde and coumarin. Results : We examined the anti-inflammatory activity of the 80% ethanol extract of Cinnamomi Ramulus in vivo by using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema model. Maximum inhibition of 54.9% was noted at the dose of 1000㎎/㎏ after 2 hours of drug administration in carrageenan-induced rat paw edema and this showed a potent anti-inflammatory effect. Conclusions : The results showed that Cinnamomi Ramulus suppressed dose-dependently LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 macrophages and also decreased iNOS protein expression. Cinnamomi Ramulus also showed a significant inhibitory effect in LPS-induced PGE2 production and COX-2 expression.
