The purpose of this study is to investigate the mentoring process and its educational meaning to a kindergarten beginning teacher for enhancing her music teaching abilities. For this study, the researcher carried out the music teaching mentoring as a participant researcher with a experienced teacher for a beginning teacher in charge of aged 4 in ways of simultaneous two-way support system, from July, 2011 to February, 2012, for approximately six months, except for vacation periods. For this purpose, the research questions were formulated as follows.
    1. What was the process of mentoring for enhancing the music teaching abilities of a kindergarten beginning teacher?
    2. What was the meaning of mentoring for enhancing the music teaching abilities of a kindergarten beginning teacher?
First, the results of the 1st research question are as follows. The music teaching ability of a kindergarten teacher had been improved in the process of the 'Beginning', 'Understanding', 'Action', 'Independence', and 'Transformation' stages.
The step of the 'Beginning' was to plan the music teaching mentoring for the teacher. We shared the ultimate purpose of this study, and established a mentor-mentee relationship, not the director-teacher relationship simply. And we discussed the teacher's needs, expectations, schedules and appointments on music educational studies as a basic initial training.
In the step of 'Understanding', the beginning and the experienced teacher tried to explore and understand each other. The research employed both interviews to know the teachers' musical background and experience and their thinking on the music. Then we shared them together. To identify the extent of the beginner's music teaching skills and attitudes, the music aptitude test, the AMMA (Gordon, 1989) and the musical self-concept test, the MUSPI (Vispoel, 1993b) were measured. Based on the test results, the startline of the mentoring was determined, and the content for professional and social-emotional support was arranged for the music teaching based on the literature review. And the questions and answers are conducted in the form of lectures and workshops.
The step of 'Action' was the music lessons for a mentee, the beginning teacher. The beginning and experienced teachers planned and implemented the lessons of physical expression, appreciation, and creative activities according to singing, and instrument playing. After that, they watched the videos about their lessons together, and analysed them in reflective thinking. The experienced teacher gave the socio-emotional and professional support to the beginning teacher. The researcher was to observe and participate in classes to feedback the improvements in the form of lessons, teaching demonstrations, discussions, workshops, consultation and cooperative conference. The teachers got the feedback from the researcher, and repeated it to implement the revised plan.
In the step of the 'Action', the change process in the music teaching skills of beginning teachers is as follows. Despite the beginning teacher started with a passion for music, she had tendency to employ the music as a means, not essentially, and had experienced a kind of fear and burden on the music teaching owing to a lack of experience and musical knowledge. The researcher and the experienced teacher gave the professional advice without criticism for the beginning teacher having a lack of the music practice. The beginning teacher began to discover her music potentials, and creative expression for young children with an attempts to apply the concepts for musical activities. Then the beginning teacher became familiar to the musical knowledge with young children, after repeating it. Eventually, she gained her own practical knowledge, integrating new concepts and activities sequentially. In this process, the beginning teacher's confidence and satisfaction helped restore the musical self-concept, and became to extend the music teaching abilities. The experienced teacher had the great roles of the social-emotional supporting for the beginning teacher, and provided her with a lot of ideas in teaching skills. In addition, the experienced teacher reconfirmed her teaching skills and improved them in a new light. In the mentoring process, the researcher and the beginning teacher were able to cooperate each other, and balance between the research and the teacher's work in kindergarten.
The step of 'Independence' was to encourage the beginning teacher to have chance to plan, implement, reflect, and decide by herself as a autonomous decision maker without any intervention. She was able to teach enthusiastically and to be changed positively about self-assessment. The self-efficacy in her was also improved as a teacher. To explore the change extents of the beginning teacher's musical skills and attitudes, the music aptitude test, the AMMA (Gordon, 1989) and the musical self-concept test, the MUSPI (Vispoel, 1993b) were measured. As a results, the pitch and rhythm were uniformly improved, and the musical self-concept was enhanced significantly.
The step of 'Transformation' was the process that the beginning teacher abandoned a tendency to rely on the mentor and try new challenge by a new idea. The beginning teacher was able to expand her own music teaching abilities in the process of mentoring, and suggest the idea to combine the instrument to young children's play, despite she felt difficult to play it at first. Consequently, the passion of the beginning teacher became to have borne fruit.
Second, the results of the 2nd research question are as follows. At first, the meaning of the mentoring for enhancing the music teaching abilities with a kindergarten beginning teacher was the 'Self-discovery'. The beginning teacher having a burden of the music and the difficulty of musical expression analyzed the causes of the trial and error occurred when experiencing music teaching, and motivated by herself and internalized through the mentoring approach. The beginning teacher who had the negative self-concept became to enhance her self-efficacy on music teaching, find her own musical potentials, and cultivate her music teaching abilities initiatively. In addition, the experienced teacher also reaffirmed her own teaching skills and improved them in a new perspective.
And also, the meaning of mentoring was the 'Cooperation'. The mutual support system with the researcher and the experienced teacher for the beginning teacher was very effective and valid to make dimensions of mutual trust, respect, and cooperation relationship in the process of mentoring. The beginning teacher made her own music teaching skills and ways and became to enhance them by activating reflective music teaching and reinforcing her practice and research behaviors through complementary partnership with researcher and the experienced teacher.
Finally, the meaning of mentoring was the ‘Going Separate’, Through the process of mentoring, the beginning teacher has overcome the technical in teaching music, changed the musical self-concept positively, and reborn as a active and creative music teacher through mentoring process, despite she didn't have a special musical talent. The enthusiasm of the beginning teacher and the creative expression of young children can make a key to success of this mentoring study.

초임교사의 음악 능력과 태도의 정도를 파악하기 위해 음악 적성검사 AMMA(Gordon, 1989)와 음악적 자아개념 MUSPI(Vispoel, 1993b)를 측정하였다.

초임교사의 음악 능력과 태도의 정도를 파악하기 위해 음악 적성검사 AMMA(Gordon, 1989)와 음악적 자아개념 MUSPI(Vispoel, 1993b)를 측정하였다.
