The purpose of this study is to investigate current research trends of teaching methods in the area of music education for early children, 3 to 5 years of age. As the importance of music education in early childhood is highlighted and the number of theses about music education of children increases, the need of organizing information data systematically grows up; therefore, this study is to offer systematic and correct information of previous research by collection Korean master`s and doctor`s theses published from 1996 to 2006 about music teaching methods for early children. By analyzing research trends, it is aimed to provide the present situation and actual status of early childhood music teaching methods, and to lead the future research to deal with various research issues and contents. For this purpose of this study, it classifies the aim of research, the certain methods of teaching music to children, the kinds of music activities, and the element of musical abilities. The results show the number of the theses about music teaching methods in early children was generally increasing annually. Also, most studies show that the trend of using the certain music teaching methods leans towards Orff, Dalcroze and Kodaly methods. The theses about music activities present various activities such as hearing, moving, playing instruments, creating, and singing. However, most of them deal with integrative music teaching methods. In addition, about elements of music abilities, there are only two categories, rhythm and integrative elements of music abilities. It shows that the research of elements of music abilities is studying too narrow. Also, even though the studies` trends of teaching music methods for early children start to change gradually, it shows still limited and lack.
