Professionalization has become a very important issue in the field of early childhood education. Reflection on one`s work is a key component of being a professional and is essential to teacher education. This paper examines the reasons why reflective thinking is essential in early childhood teacher education, defines reflective thinking through its various aspects, and offers several strategies to promote it among preservice and inservice teachers. The strategies include journal writing, autobiography, curriculum story, case study, action research, and ethnographic study. An ability to reflect in- and on- practice is not something that most prospective teachers master within a handful of courses, or in a month of student teaching. It is, rather, a lifelong practice that only begins during preservice education.
