      • Long-range transport of giant particles in Asian dust identified by physical, mineralogical, and meteorological analysis

        <P>Abstract. Giant particles transported over long distances are generally of limited concern in atmospheric studies due to their low number concentrations in mineral dust and possible local origin. However, they can play an important role in regional circulation of earth materials due to their enormous volume concentration. Asian dust laden with giant particles was observed in Korea on 31 March 2012, after a migration of about 2000 km across the Yellow Sea from the Gobi Desert. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that 20% of the particles exceeded 10 μm in equivalent sphere diameter, with a maximum of 60 μm. The median diameter from the number distribution was 5.7 μm, which was larger than the diameters recorded of 2.5 and 2.9 μm in Asian dust storms in 2010 and 2011, respectively, and was consistent with independent optical particle counter data. Giant particles (>10 μm) contributed about 89% of the volume of the dust in the 2012 storm. Illite-smectite series clay minerals were the major mineral group followed by quartz, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and calcite. The total phyllosilicate content was ~52%. The direct long-range transport of giant particles was confirmed by calcite nanofibers closely associated with clays in a submicron scale identified by high-resolution SEM and transmission electron microscopy. Since giant particles consisted of clay agglomerates and clay-coated quartz, feldspars, and micas, the mineral composition varied little throughout the fine (<5 μm), coarse (5-10 μm), giant-S (10-20 μm), and giant-L (>20 μm) size bins. Analysis of the synoptic conditions of the 2012 dust event and its migration indicated that the mid-tropospheric strong wind belt directly stretching to Korea induced rapid transport of the dust, delivering giant particles. Giant dust particles with high settling velocity would be the major input into the terrestrial and marine sedimentary and ecological systems of East Asia and the western Pacific. Analysis of ancient aeolian deposits in Korea suggested the common deposition of giant particles from Asian dust through the late Quaternary Period. The roles of giant particles should be reviewed with regard to regional circulation of mineral particles and nutrients. </P>

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation of alcohol use disorder, social support and depression of the college students. Method: In this descriptive design study, 334 university students were recruited through convenient sampling from October, 2015 to January, 2016. Questionnaires used for online Google docs were AUDIT-K(Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Korea), MSPSS(Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support) and SDS(Self - Rating Depression Scale). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one way ANOVA with Scheffe's test, and Pearson’s coefficient using SPSS 22.0 program. Result: 230 students of the 334 college students(68.8%) were classified into alcohol use disorder group. There was a significant correlation between the degree of social support and depression among all participants(r=-.45, p=.000). However, there was no correlation between alcohol use disorder and depression(r=.23, p=.006) and between alcohol use disorder and social support(r=.02, p=.758). Conclusion: This study showed a relationship between social support and depression, not the alcohol use disorder. This result can be used as the basic data in nursing research about alcohol use disorder, social support and depression of college students. Also, Further researches are needed to examine the factors that affect alcohol use disorder of college students, as well as depression and social support.

      • 미국 의학드라마에 나타난 간호이미지와 역할수행 연구

        We tried to inquire the people's views on nursing or nurses, correct the image of nurse and take it as a basis to be applied on nursing education examining the image of nursing on Television drama playing a important role of mass media. 523 nurses of the characters in drama is applied to the analysis object of this study by selecting 3 American medical dramas, Grey's Anatomy, House M.D, E.R from 2005 to 2007. Contents analysis method was used in Data Analysis, which was used in Lim Mi-lim ?Research on contents analysis on image of nursing on television drama?, 7 Items was used after Coders previously modify and compensate it based on research documents of Kalish & Kalisch(1986), Yoon Young(1983), Lee Hye-Ok(1982), Lee Young-Bok, etc in analysis items. Before making the coding, we did pre-test. 6 Coders made of 3teams, 2 Coders are in each team, made the Codings the article on each person by Item seeing the recorded Film. An each team makes coding about 50episodes, total 147episodes for 2weeks. We used double coding and when the results are different between two coders, we decided just one result through mutual agreement. The average of reliability degree was 97.4% which measured the reliability degree by the method of Holsti. The statistic method of Frequency, Percentage was used using EXCEL Program in data processing. The result of research is as follows. 1. The general feature of nurses on the drama is that they are women(92.7%) which is 20 or 30-aged(70.5%). 2. Relative importance of 65.2% nurses in drama is depicted as surrounding characters and most of them was expressed as the character plating surrounding role. 3. The affair attitude of nurses shown on drama is revealed as active(24.5%), autonomous(32%), kind(16.8%), mechanical(23.2%) and adept(28.4%). However, unknown category is the highest in all affairs. 4. The professional activity of nurses was classified with professional/simple affair, The professional activity of nurses was 80% and simple activity of nurses was 22.9%. The professional activity of nurses was classified with personal/assistant affair. The personal activity of nurses was 61.9% and assistant activity of nurses was 15.1%. 5. The place nurses of the drama appears are hospital(97.7%). 6. The appearance feature of nurses is shown on common physique (55.0%), common stature(79.3%), common appearance(76.1%), common dignity(97.5%) and decent (51.1%). 7. The feature of character of nurses depicted on Television drama is neutral in all 11 affairs. We want the following epigraph based on above conclusion. 1. The continuos research intended for mass people is required about how their image of nurse is changed after watching medical drama. 2. The research to construct monitoring mass media system and make plans for developing is required for nurse image being in a triangular position as a professional job.

        High-temperature strength of silicon carbide ceramics sintered with rare-earth oxide and aluminum nitride

        The effect sintering additives comprising AlN and Re<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> (Re=Sc, Lu, Yb, Er and Y) in a 2:3 molar ratio on the high-temperature strength of liquid phase-sintered and subsequently annealed SiC ceramics was investigated. Clean SiC-SiC boundaries and clean SiC-junction phase boundaries without the amorphous inter-granular phase (IGP) were observed in Sc<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-, Lu<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>- and Yb<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-doped SiC ceramics. Clean SiC-SiC boundaries and SiC-junction phase boundaries with the amorphous IGP were also observed in Er<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-doped SiC ceramics. The amorphous IGP was present in both SiC-SiC and SiC-junction phase boundaries in Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-doped SiC ceramics. The high-temperature strength was not dependent on the crystalline nature of the IGP and junction phases, but was dependent on the chemistry of these phases. Lu<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-, Er<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-, Sc<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>- and Y<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-doped SiC maintained their room-temperature strengths up to 1600, 1500, 1400 and 1400<SUP>o</SUP>C, respectively. However, Yb<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>-doped SiC manifested a drastic degradation in strength at 1400<SUP>o</SUP>C. Thus, clean boundaries and/or crystallization of junction phases did not always lead to the hoped-for increase in strength at temperatures above 1400<SUP>o</SUP>C.

        The thin film growing processes and the photolithographic techniques involved in the manufacturing of thin film magnetic heads are discussed. The thin film heads are composed of the hundreds of electromagnetic transducers on a single wafer and are made of Al_(2)O_(3)-TiC substrate on which Al_(2)O_(3) film as a insulating, protective layer and gap material, Cu film as a multi-turn coil and permalloy film as a magnetic material are deposited and patterned. In this article we will introduce how the thin film heads is fabricated and differ from an integrated semiconductor device. An effort is devoted to develop the formation of PR frame using a lithography process and finally the thin film heads manufacturing technologies.

        Effect of citric acid on the acidification of artificial pepsin solution for metacercariae isolation from fish

        Artificial digestive solution based on pepsin is essential for collecting metacercariae from fish. To promote the enzymatic reactivity of pepsin, the pH of the solution has to be adjusted to pH 1.0-2.0. Hydrochloride (HCl) is usually used for this purpose, but the use of HCl raises safety concerns. The aim of this work was to address the usefulness of citric acid as an alternative for HCl for the acidification of pepsin solution, and to examine its potential to damage metacercariae during in vitro digestion as compared with HCl. Changes in pH after adding 1-9% of citric acid (m/v) to pepsin solution were compared to a 1% HCl (v/v) addition. Digestion of fish muscle was evaluated by measuring released protein concentrations by spectrophotometry. In addition, survival rates of metacercariae in pepsin solution were determined at different citric acid concentrations and were compared that of with 1% HCl. The present study shows that addition of citric acid reduced the pH of pepsin solutions to the required level. Addition of more than 5% of citric acid resulted in the effective digestion of fish muscle over 3h in vitro, and 5% citric acid was less lethal to metacercariae than 1% HCl in pepsin solution. Pepsin solution containing 5% citric acid had digestive capacity superior to pepsin solution containing 1% HCl after 3h incubation with released protein concentrations of 12.0ng/ml for 5% citric acid and 9.6ng/ml for 1% HCl. Accordingly, the present study suggests that the addition of 5% citric acid to pepsin solution is a good alternative to 1% HCl in infection studies because citric acid is a stable at room temperature and has a good safety profile. In addition, we suggest that the use of citric acid enables the preparation of commercial digestive solutions for the detection of microorganisms in fish and other vertebrate muscle tissue.

      • 대학생의 암 예방 수칙에 대한 인식 및 실천행태 연구

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify college student's perception and practice of 'National Cancer Prevention Actions' and the factors that influence the perception and practice. Method: The participants were 310 undergraduates selected by convenience sampling at colleges in Seoul. Instrument was 2014 Survey of Perception and Practice of National Cancer Prevention Actions by National Cancer Center(2014), and has been modified for the purpose of the study. The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe test with SPSS 23.0 Windows software. Results: The most recognized action for cancer prevention in college students was "Do not smoke, also avoid smoking smoke"(96.8%) while the most unrecognized was "Get a type B hepatitis vaccination"(58.7%). The most practiced action for cancer prevention in college students was "Sexually as to safe sex"(94.8%) while the most unpracticed was "Exercise five times a week or more, for at least 30 minutes a day"(33.9%). Among general characteristics, participants' age (t=-2.015, p<.05), major (F=3.109, p<.001), and residential type (F=4.959, p<.01) were statistically significant in the recognition of Cancer Prevention Actions and major(F=3.341 p<.05) and residential type(F=3.827, p<.05) were also significant in the practice of Cancer Prevention Actions. Among health characteristics, health concern(F=3.154, p<.05) and education in cancer(t=-3.112, p<.01) showed statistically significant differences in the recognition of Cancer Prevention Actions while health concern(F=7.896 p<.001) and subjective health status(F=9.913, p<.001) showed differences in the practice of Cancer Prevention Actions. Conclusion: These findings showed the gap between the perception and practice of cancer prevention actions. Considering the importance of individual characteristics, it is essential to develop a differentiated cancer prevention education program for college students. Also, nursing intervention program should be developed to raise the alertness of cancer in order to enhance cancer preventive practice.

      • A wide‐field survey of satellite galaxies around the spiral galaxy M106

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>We present a wide‐field survey of satellite galaxies in M106 (NGC 4258) covering a <IMG src='/wiley-blackwell_img/equation/MNR_18022_mu1.gif' alt ='inline image'/>× 2° field around M106 using Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope/MegaCam. We find 16 satellite galaxy candidates of M106. Eight of these galaxies are found to be dwarf galaxies that are much smaller and fainter than the remaining galaxies. Three of these galaxies are new findings. Surface brightness profiles of 15 out of 16 satellite galaxies can be represented well by an exponential disc profile with varying scalelength. We derive the surface number density distribution of these satellite galaxies. The central number density profile (<I>d</I> < 100 kpc) is well fitted by a power law with a power index of −2.1 ± 0.5, similar to the expected power index of isothermal distribution. The luminosity function of these satellites is represented well by the Schechter function with a faint‐end slope of −1.19<SUP>+0.03</SUP><SUB>−0.06</SUB>. Integrated photometric properties (total luminosity, total colour and disc scalelength) and the spatial distribution of these satellite galaxies are found to be roughly similar to those of the Milky Way and M31.</P>

        칡소의 염색체 양상과 핵형 분석

        The Korean Native Stripped Cattle known as Chickso have distinctive black hair belts all over the body to varying extents on a Hanwoo(Korean Cattle)-like yellowish brown background. These Battle are remaining only in a limited area of this country and are known to yield a flavorful meat somewhat distinct from that of Hanwoo, but their genetic lineage has not been identified. We have carried out karyotyping of these cattle firm the lymphocyte culture. Blood samples were collected from 20 of male and female cattle that had been bred at Poongjeon Farm located in Kosong, Kyongnam, and were subjected to chromosomal morphology and G- and C-banding analysis. Chickso, like Hanwoo, had 58 autosomes and X and Y sex chromosomes which were morphologically very similar to those of the latter. All the 58 autosomes revealed almost a zero value of centromeric index, suggesting that they are acrocentric; sex chromosomes X and Y were submetacentric and metacentric, respectively. Following G-banding, the light bands appeared near the centromeric site in all the autosomes whereas the specific dark bands were consistently visible in each homologous chromosome. Overall, the G-banding pattern was nearly identical between the Chickso and Hanwoo. C-bands representing the heterochromatin were present at or near the centromere in all the autosomes, whereas in sex chromosomes, they were found distributed on variable sites. The proportion of constitutive heterochromatin ranged 20∼30%. These patterns were not significantly different between the two subspecies. All of these cytogenetic results suggest that the distinctive traits of Chickso did not arise from a cytogenetic variation from Hanwoo, i. e. the former is simply a subpopulation of the latter. As such, we propose that selection and propagation of the Chickso based on economic traits may be advantageous to the domestic beef industry.

      • Effect of acteoside on the re-localization and abnormal morphology of mitochondria in porcine oocytes during in vitro maturation

        <P>The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of acteoside, an antioxidant, on in vitro maturation (IVM) of oocytes to improve early parthenogenetic embryonic developmental competence. Porcine immature oocytes (total 770) were cultured in IVM medium with acteoside at various concentrations, 0 (control), 10, 30, and 50 mu M. Each group was assessed for maturation and subsequent development rates, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level (15 oocytes per group and four independent experiments performed), ultrastructure observation (15 oocytes per group), mitochondrial activity (30 oocytes per groups and three independent experiments performed), and expression patterns of apoptosis-related genes (100 expended parthenogenetic embryos per group and three independent experiment performed). Main outcome measures were the rates of IVM, blastocyst formation, ROS, mitochondria, and expression of apoptosis-related genes in oocytes treated with acteoside. Addition of acteoside during IVM did not change the maturation efficiency of oocytes but improved the rate of blastocyst formation with significantly decreased ROS level. Moreover, in acteoside-treated oocytes, cytoplasmic maturation was improved with morphologically uniform distribution of mitochondria and lipid droplets in cytoplasm. Acteoside supplementation also increased the mRNA expression levels of antiapoptotic genes and reduced those of pro-apoptotic genes. Acteoside supplementation in IVM medium improves the oocyte quality and subsequent development of pre-implantation embryos that would eventually contribute to produce embryos with high embryonic development competence.</P>
