Progenitor Cells in Healing after Pterygium Excision

Bone marrow derived progenitor cells were reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of pterygium and have been suggested to be important in angiogenesis and the repair process after tissue damage. In order to investigate the involvement of these cells in wound healing after a pterygium excision, immunohistochemical staining was performed with a temporary amniotic membrane, applied to the bare sclera, after a pterygium excision using various progenitor cell markers, including CD34, c-kit, STRO-1, and AC133, to determine the expression levels of the participating cells. CD34-positive cells were observed along with some round or spindle-shaped mononuclear cells on the stromal side of the amniotic membrane. Some CD34-positive, large, and round or spindle-shaped cells formed clusters resembling small vessels in some regions of the amniotic membrane. c-kit was expressed in the epithelium that had grown over the amniotic membrane and in the spindle-shaped or round mononuclear cells in the stroma. Many stellate- to spindle-shaped fibroblast like cells expressed STRO-1, and AC133 was expressed in some round and ovoid cells. Overall, these results suggest that adult bone marrow- derived progenitor cells, such as endothelial progenitor cells and mesenchymal stem cells, are involved in the wound healing process post-excision in patients with pterygium.

Orbital Sarcoidosis Presenting as Diffuse Swelling of the Lower Eyelid

The author reports a case of orbital Sarcoidosis in a 70-year-old female that initially presented as diffuse swelling of the lower eyelid. The patient complained of painless swelling of the left lower lid without palpable mass, and a computerized tomography (CT) scan of the orbit was unremarkable. A serum angiotensin converting enzyme level was elevated, and hilar lymphadenopathy was noted on the chest CT. The patient underwent surgical debulking for histologic confirmation, which led to a final diagnosis of sarcoidosis involving the orbital fat. Unexplained chronic eyelid swelling without a mass should be considered a possible ophthalmic manifestation of orbital sarcoidosis.

In Defense of Hume’s Skeptical Argument against Induction

It is well known that Hume gave a powerful skeptical argument against induction. Many philosophers think that even though Hume’s description of induction is inadequate in some respects, his skeptical argument is still irrefutable. However, Okasha argues that this cannot be right: Once we adequately describe what we are doing with induction, Hume’s skeptical argument cannot be applied to this adequate description of induction any more. In this paper, in opposition to Okasha, I will argue that Hume's skeptical argument still can be applied even on the ‘adequate’ description of induction.

골프 매니아 수준에 따른 세분시장 특성 분석: 골프장 선택속성 및 만족도에 따른 차이

Given the situation that domestic golf industry is highly competitive, it is imperative to understand the nature of true desire of the golf maniacs to hold the lead among competitors. Thus, this study contains three main purposes: 1) to find out selection attributes of golf course customers based on their mania level, 2) suggest the features of market segmentation of golf course and lastly, 3) to present the difference among segments related to selection attributes and satisfaction. From September 1st to 30th, 2018, the survey questionnaire was distributed to the golf community members who have joined to golf practice clubs in Seoul and the data analyses were performed as utilizing the SPSS 20. As results, firstly, three different segments were clustered: 1) active mania, 2) intermediate mania and 3) passive mania. Secondly, from the finding of difference analysis between selection attribute and segments, it was revealed that there is significant different only from the “golf course” factor. Lastly, from the finding of different analysis between satisfaction and segments, Active mania showed the highest degree of satisfaction whereas passive mania showed the least one. This research is expected to contribute to building proper marketing strategies based on given market segmentation features to golf course business players.

The tumor embolism is defined as tumor cells within the vascular system such as pulmonary artery that is not contiguous with the other metastatic foci. The incidence of tumor embolism varies widely ranging from 3% to 26% among seve ral studies; whereas lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, pancreas cancer are associated with high risks for tumor embolism. However thyroid cancer is rarely associated with tumor embolism. Among the rare cases, tumor embolism was reported as being mostly of follicular carcinoma or undifferentiated carcinoma, but few of papillary carcinoma. We report an unusual presentation that pulmonary tumor embolism from thyroid papillary carcinoma was diagnosed with positron emission tomography/computed tomography (CT) and chest CT.

심리적 거리에 따른 관광목적지 이미지 영향에 관한 연구

The purpose of this study is summarized by 3 sections. First, it is to study influencing relationship between psychic distance and tour destination image (cognitive image and emotional image). Second, it’s to study influencing relationship between tour destination image (cognitive image and emotional image) and intention to visit. Third, it is to study influencing relationship between psychic distance and intention to visit. In order to achieve these research purposes, questionnaire survey was conducted with citizens in Manila city in the Philippines and 334 valid questionnaire papers were returned. According to analysis result of actual proof, first, psychic distance affects tour destination image (cognitive image and emotional image). Second, tour destination image (cognitive image and emotional image) affects intention to visit. Third, psychic distance affects intention to visit. The result of this study would contribute to tourist’s behavior research with conception of psychic distance.
