The purposes of this article are to find the general trends of unmarried men and women's mate selection conditions, to estimate the differences according to related variables and to analyze the effects of significant variables influencing on mate selection. The samples were selected from the unmarried 164 men and 235 women living in Kwang-ju. The major findings are as follows; 1. All scores of mate selection conditions were higher than medium. Especially in desirable spouse conditions, women's were higher than men's. Move valued spouse conditions were women's apperance, health, family background in men and all conditions in women. Women desired more similar and interactional conditions than men. 2. External and internal conditions were significantly different from age, work in men and age, father's and mother's age in women. Homogeneous and interactional conditions were significantly different from sex role attitude, premarital sexual experience in men and age, education, work, father's age, love necessity of marriage, sex role attitude, premarital sexual experience in women. 3. External and internal conditions were influenced by work in men and mother's and father's age in women. Homogeneous conditions were influenced by premarital sexual experience, necessity of marriage in men and age, premarital sexual experi-ence, necessity of marriage in women. Interactional conditions were influenced by sex role attitude, father's age in men and sex role attitude, education, work in women.

석청에 포함된 grayanotoxin에 의해 독성 작용이 나올 수 있으며, 이러한 독성 작용은 일반적으로 24시간 이내 저절로 회복된다. 최근에 본 저자들은 석청 복용 후 발생한 심실빈맥을 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다. 49세 남자가 호흡곤란으로 내원하였으며, 내원당시 분당 40회 정도의 동성 서맥이 관찰되었고, 수액을 투여하던 중 심실 빈맥이 발생하였다. 항부정맥제를 투여 후 정상 동율동으로 전환되었으며, 특별한 이상 없이 4일 후 퇴원하였다. Mad-honey intoxication caused by the consumption of honey producted from the nectar of rhododendrons. The grayanotoxins cause the intoxication. The toxic effects of mad-honey poisoning are rarely fatal and generally last for no more than 24 hours. We experienced one case, a 49 years-old man who presented with dyspnea after ingestion of mad-honey. He showed marked sinus bradycardia with < 40 beats per minute on admission. The cardiac rhythm was changed to ventricular tachycardia immediately. These features resolved completely in 24 hours with continuous infusion of amiodarone(600 mg per day) and fluids. We report the case of intoxication of mad-honey as a presentation of fatal cardiac arrhythmia.

Background : Gastric cancer is the most common malignant tumor in Korea. surgical operation is one of the major treatment modalities for gastric cancer patients. Therefore, gastrectomy is one of the most common procedures in General Surgery. There were variation in length of hospital stay and medical treatment for gastrectomy between three surgeons at Asan Medical Center. Clinical pathways have received considerable attention as a tool for recucing the medical practice variation, increasing the efficiency of care process, and improving the quality of care. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a clinical pathway for gastrectomy in gastric cancer patients. Methods : The clinical pathway for gastrectomy was developed and implemented by a multidisciplinary group in Asan Medical Center. A computerized clinical pathway program was developed and revised after a pilot test. A total of 145 patients underwent gastrectomy by three surgeons at Asan Medical Center. We compared the length of hospital stay, patient satisfaction, and unplanned readmission rate between the pre-pathway group(n=67) and the post-pathway group(n=78). We also investigated the degree of satisfaction among the physicians and nurses who were main end-users of the clinical pathway. Results : The clinical pathway was applied to all target patients. The average length of hospital stay was shortened from 12.7days to 10.6days(p<0.01). The degree of patient satisfaction with the care process changed from 90.3% to 89.2% after the implementation of the clinical pathway, but the difference was of satistically significant(p=0.761). Unplanned readmission rate was 2.9% in the pre-pathway group. More than 90% of physicians and nurses answered that the clinical pathway had been a useful tool in their medical practice. Conclusions : The findings of the study demonstrated that implementation of the clinical pathway for gastrectomy produced substantial reduction in the length of hospital stay while improving the quality of patient outcomes. The computerized clinical pathway program can be used as one of the powerful patient management tools for reducing the practice variations and increasing the efficiency of care process in Korea hospital settings.

The methanolic extract of the leaves of Liriodendron tulipifera was found to show inhibitory activity towards farnesyl protein transferase (FPTase). Bioassay-guided fractionation of the methanolic extract resulted in the isolation of lipiferolide, an inhibitor of FPTase. This compound inhibited the FPTase activity in a dose-dependent manner, and showed cell growth inhibitory activity against several tumor cells.

High performance liquid chromatographic method with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) has been performed for the simultaneous determination of four marker constituents, paeoniflorin, trans-cinnamic acid, schisandrin and glycyrrhizin in traditional herbal medicinal preparation, So-Cheong-Ryong-Tang (SCRT). The presence of paeoniflorin, trans-cinnamic acid, schisandrin and glycyrrhizin in this decoction was ascertained by retention time, spiking with each authentic standard, UV spectrum and ESI mass spectrum. All four compounds showed good linearity (r2 > 0.998) in a relatively wide concentration ranges. The RSD for intra-day and inter-day precision was less than 3% and the limits of detection (LOD) were less than 30 ng. The mean recovery of each compound was 94.1 - 113.0% with RSD values less than 3.0%. These results suggest that the developed HPLC method is simple, effective and could be readily utilized as a quality control method for commercial SCRT products.

<P>Host genomic alterations in addition to human papillomavirus (HPV) are needed for cervical precursor lesions to progress to invasive cancer because only a small percentage of women infected by the virus develop disease. However, the genomic alterations during the progression of cervical lesions have not been systematically examined. The aim of this study was to identify differential genomic alterations among cervical intraepithelial neoplasia CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 and cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Genomic alterations were examined for 15 cases each of CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 and SCC by array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array CGH). The chromosomal regions showing significant differential in DNA copy number aberrations (DCNAs) among CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 and SCC were successfully identified by resampling-based t-test. The chromosomal regions of 5q35.3 and 2q14.3 showed significant DCNAs between CIN1 and CIN2, and between CIN2 and CIN3, respectively, while a significant difference in DCNAs between CIN3 and SCC was observed at 1q24.3, 3p14.1, 3p14.2, 5q13.2, 7p15.3, 7q22.1 and 13q32.3. In addition, the status of DCNAs in 1q43, 2p11.2, 6p11.2, 7p21.1, 7p14.3, 10q24.1, 13q22.3, 13q34 and 16p13.3 was conserved throughout the progression of CIN to SCC. The presence of differential and common DCNAs among CIN1, CIN2, CIN3 and SCC supports that the CIN progression may include continual clonal selection and evolution. This approach also identified 34 probe sets consistently overexpressed when amplified, suggesting an unbiased identification of candidate genes in SCC during cervical cancer progression.</P>
Simultaneous Determination of Paeoniflorin and Glycyrrhizin in Sayuk-san by HPLC/DAD

A high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method for the simultaneous determination of marker constituents, paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizin was established for the quality control of traditional herbal medicinal preparation, Sayuk-san (SYS). Separation and quantification were successfully achieved with a Waters XTerra RP18 column ($5{\mu}m$, $4.6mm\;I.D.{\times}150mm$) by gradient elution of a mixture of acetonitrile and water containing 0.03% phosphoric acid (pH 2.03) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The diode-array UV/vis detector (DAD) was used for the detection and the wavelength for quantification was set at 230 nm. The presence of paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizin in this decoction was ascertained by retention time, spiking with each authentic standard and UV spectrum. All two compounds showed good linearity ($r^2$>0.996) in a relatively wide concentration ranges. The R.S.D. for intra-day and inter-day precision was less than 7.3% and the limits of detection (LOD) were less than 55.7 ng. The mean recovery of each compound was $102.3{\sim}111.1%$ with R.S.D. values less than 4.6%. This method was successfully applied to the determination of contents of paeoniflorin and glycyrrhizin in three commercial products of SYS. These results suggest that the developed HPLC method is simple, effective and could be readily utilized as a quality control method for commercial SYS products.
