When listening to the Figaro's aria "Se vuol ballare"of Mozart's opera, Le Nozze di Figaro at first, we can guess the theme of the aria is just light and happy things because of its minuet rhythm and simple melody. But, we can realize it's not the happy aria if we see the opera and read the text. So I want to research about this aria in detail and find out why he composed like this. There are two kinds of opera. One is opera seria(serious) and the other is oepra buffa(comic). In opera seria, the leading singers each expected their arias of varied mood, sad, angry, heroic or meditative. On the contrary, in comic opera, most arias have delightful melody. But even in the comic opera, there are serious situations. However, Mozart wanted to keep the bright mood because the pleasant atomosphere is easily and widely accepted by the audiences. Therefore, instead of selecting minor key in serious situation, Mozart changed tempo, time and dynamic to express the character's bad feeling. He also created the angry mood and hunt emotion through the orchestra part that imitates the text with horn and string tremolos. Comic energies are usually gathered up and released through musical means. When the story comes to reach a crisis, the tempo gets faster. It makes each character (especially Figaro) lies. Ironically, in his comic opera, every lie accepted easily. Mozart controled the crisis with the rapid orchetral figures and the breathless vocal lines mirror their panic. The most successful operas are those in which the story and the music work together. In this aspect, Mozart had a great talent of it. He intended his arias to suit both the available voices and the dramatic situation, and he considered expectations of his audiences rather than defying them.
F. J. Haydn의 '천지창조'에 나타난 독창적 음악접근

Franz Joseph Haydn was born at Rohrau, Austria, in 1732, and he spent most of his life in the neighborhood of Vienna. He had become the most famous composer in Europe, and had established the norms of classical music in the symphony, the string quartet and the keyboard sonata. He was a very faithful man. We can find evidences in all of his religious works, most notably, The Creation. He habitually wrote a writing "In nominee Domini(in the name of the God)" at the beginnings of his scores and either "Laus Deo(praise be to God)" or "Soli Deo Gloria(only glory to God)" at the ends. His numerous religiously themed works point to his faith. Haydn felt so moved by Handel's oratorios during his London visits in the early 1790s and he began to compose his own oratorio. He later remarked that: "I was never so devout as when I was at work on The Creation; I fell on my knees each day and begged God to give me strength to finish the work." It was the longest time he had ever spent on a single composition. Explaining this, he wrote "I spent much time over it because I expect it to last for a long time." The Creation expresses composer's intense faith and skill. Haydn combines various styles and moods. Haydn's "Chaos" is a superb orchestral tone painting that depicts the origin and initial creation of the world. In the numerous picturesque passages that illustrate natural phenomena and creatures of the world. The Creation is an early example of musical Romanticism. One hears, for example, quasi-Wagnerian tonal ambiguities and special orchestral effects in "Chaos" (no.1) and Schubertian brooklike accompaniments in "Rolling in foaming billows" (no.7). There is also the occasional use of forward-looking harmonic surprises and enharmonicism. Other proto-romantic characteristics include its focus upon nature, its expanded orchestra, and its abandonment of classical forms for expressive purposes. Haydn's melodic invention and colorful orchestration influenced many later composers, including Verdi and Wagner. Haydn could not base his composition of recitatives on Italian principles because they did not allow for the variable rhythm needed to convey biblical prose. So, He created new non-conventional cadences and phrases to express the text. He felt a strong compulsion to connect the music to the text, since it was biblical text and the very word of God. These were the most important words to the religious Haydn. Haydn's religious works move many Christians' heart so deeply. The Creation has become one of Haydn's most popular works.
J. S. Bach 마태수난곡의 작품 분석과 배청에 관한 연구

The extraordinary composer, Bach is praised by many other composers. Beethoven said of Bach "Nicht Bach aber Meer haben wir hier", - we have here not a stream but an ocean (Bach means stream in German) and he also mentioned Bach was the "father of all harmony", for Max Reger, he was the "beginning and the end of all music", and for Claude Debussy he was simply "the Good Lord of music." Mozart said "He is the father, and we are his children". Many composers, writers praised Bach in this manner. Bach's art is surely omnipresent in the music life of today, accessible to everyone. Born into a musical family, Bach received an education at schools in Eisenach, Ohrdruf, and Luneburg. Bach's first permanent positions were as organist in Arnstadt (1703-1707) and Miihlhausen (1707-1708). Bach was cantor at the St. Thomas Church and School, and Director of Music for Leipzig. Bach lived in the Baroque period. At this time, the characteristics of music written and in this style are as follows: diatonic, polyphonic, figured bass, basso continuo, sudden dynamic change, long ornated melodic line, doctrine of Affections, etc. Bach wrote the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) which is regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. Soprano aria, Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben (For love my Savior is now dying) in Matthew passion is an example that has representative musical characteristics of baroque era. Matthew passion is for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra which make the music majestic, with libretto by Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici). The recitatives are based on chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, present a narration of the passion story. The intent of this study is to present a comparison of John passion and Matthew passion. It also explains the whole structure of Matthew passion like the orchestra role and choir role. This work mainly analyzes the expression things such as word painting technique, imitation to exaggerate the scene in the instrument, harmonization of voice and instrument solo part. perfect blending of solo and choir part though they have very contrastic musical characteristics. Some figurative rhythmic uses that are related to the text can be found in this passion. For example, in alto recitative, 'Erbarrn es Gott! Hier steht der Heiland angebunden (0 gracious God! Behold, the Saviour standeth bound)', the accompaniment of strings and continuo conjures up a vivid picture of the chastisement by means of a sharp dotted rhythm. A main characteristic of Bach's chorale settings which distinguishes them from other composers is the expressive harmonic coloring to emphasize particular words or special meaning. The harmonic accompaniment supports the vocal recitatives. When the text means such as 'death', 'pain', 'sorrow', 'fear', chromatic and dissonant chords are often used to express the words. Word painting occurs when the music directly reflects what is stated in the text. For example, the text mentions "heaven," the music gets higher. The 13 chorales, placed at moments of greatest emotional tension such as the prophecy of resurrection, the arrest, the trial, and so on. When Bach composed his St. Matthew Passion in 1927, praise was not the immediate reaction, but through Mendelssohn's recognition of Bach's genius and his efforts, Bach's works can be accessible to a wider public today and recognized as summits of musical expression.
