In this study, metaphorical expressions for the COVID 19 pandemic in Korean newspaper editorials are examined to find out which aspects of the scientific facts about the coronavirus and of the social reality of the pandemic are highlighted or hidden by the conceptual metaphors and frames related to these expressions. The analysis shows that the metaphorical expressions seem to have been derived from several frames: ‘war', ‘fire', ‘natural disaster', and ‘beast.' Based on these results, this paper discusses in depth how such frames highlight or hide the scientific facts about and the social reality of the pandemic. In addition, from the viewpoint of the ‘war' frame, we can criticize two of the Korean government's COVID 19 slogans: firstly, “Wearing masks is the most effective vaccine.” is a message pushing scientific inaccuracies because the functions of masks are different from those of vaccines; secondly, “Let's fight together in the war against COVID 19.” can unfairly persuade the Korean people to feel obligated to follow all the quarantine measures imposed by the government because it makes them regard the pandemic as a war.

This article compares how Korean University students and British professional writers use differently the lexicogrammatical resources of Heteroglossic ENGAGEMENT in Appraisal for writing argumentative texts. The research distances itself from the previous contrastive rhetoric in three perspectives: professional writers' texts are chosen as an L1 reference corpus for comparison; the topic of L1 and L2 texts is controlled to prevent possible topic-related variations in the frequencies of certain lexicogrammatical features; the emphasis for the comparison has been shifted to the rhetorical function of intersubjective positioning from the macro- or micro-structural features of text. The result has revealed that the Koreans, compared to the British, have used significantly less frequently those resources for creating dialogic spaces of the reader's alternative opinions and for drawing on external voices. However, the generic integrity of argumentative texts seems to be reflected in the overall frequency-ratios of the formulations for Heteroglossic ENGAGEMENT, and this can be a useful guidance for teaching L2 writing.
未熟兒 및 底體重兒에서의 血淸總蛋白 및 蛋白分割値의 變化를 究明하기 위하여 梨花大學病院産室에서 出生한 新生兒중 體重群別로 1001∼1500mg群 14例, 1501∼2000mg群 22例, 2001∼2500gm群 25例, 2501∼3000gm群 25例로 總 86例의 未熟兒 및 底體重兒를 檢査對象으로 하여 cellulose acetate膜을 이용한 血淸蛋白電氣泳動 分劃値를 測定한바 血淸總蛋白 및 albumin, γ-globulin値는 未熟兒 및 底體重兒에서 體重이 增加함에 따라 各各 絶對量 平均値는 上昇하여 未熟兒에서의 發育 및 成熱度를 評價하는데 다소의 도움을 줄 수 있다는 知見을 얻은 바 있으나 globulin分劃중 α_1, α_2, β globulin値는 體重 增加에 따라 各各의 分劃値 變化는 다른 여러 硏究者들의 成績에서와 같이 著者의 경우에도 統計學的인 有意性을 찾아 볼수 없어 α 및 β globulin値는 未熟兒의 出生時 成熟度와는 何等의 關係가 없었음은 本硏究를 통하여 認知할 수 있었다. <Fig. 1> mean values of total protein and albumin in premature and low birth weight infant. 원문 참조하세요 <Fig. 2> Mean values of globulin fractions in premature and low birth weight infant 원문 참조하세요 Serum protein levels were measured among 86 healthy premature and low-birth weight infants. They were divided into 4 groups according to the birth weight. Group 1 included 14 infants with weights between 1001 and 1500 gm. Group 2 consisted of 22 infants with weights varying between 1501 and 2000gm. In group 3 there 25 infants with weights varying between 2001 and 2500gm. A fourth group contained 25 infants with weights varying between 2501 and 3000gm. The total proteins, albumin, globulins, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta and gamma fractions were determined. The concentration of total proteins, albumin and globulin varied directly with the weights fo infants. Alpha 1, alpha 2 and beta globulins did not vary with the weights of infants. Gamma globulin varied directly with the weights of infants, the lowest mean gamma globulin level being observed in the lowest weight group.
