Efficient information-based criteria for model selection in quantile regression

Information-based model selection criteria such as the AIC and BIC employ check loss functions to measure the goodness of fit for quantile regression models. Model selection using a check loss function is robust due to its resistance to outlying observations. In the present study, we suggest modifying the check loss function to achieve a more efficient goodness of fit. Because the cusp of the check loss is quadratically adjusted in the modified version, greater efficiency (or variance reduction) in the model selection is expected. Because we focus on model selection here, we do not modify the model-fitting process. Generalized cross-validation is another common method for choosing smoothing parameters in quantile smoothing splines. We describe how this can be adjusted using the modified check loss to increase efficiency. The proposed generalized cross-validation is designed to reflect the target quantile and sample size. Two real data sets and simulation studies are presented to evaluate its performance using linear and nonlinear quantile regression models.

This paper aims to analyze the effect of CEO characteristics of lodging companies on CSR. CEO characteristics are one of the most important factors influencing corporate activities. Since the management behavior of companies may vary depending on CEO characteristics, it is meaningful to study how the CSR activities of lodging companies change depending on the nationality and number of CEO. The sample of this study is based on externally audited companies that fall under the " lodging industry" in the medium industry classification of the Korea Listed Companies Association from 2000 to 2020. The result shows that lodging companies with foreign CEOs perform more CSR than those with Korean CEOs. It is found that lodging companies with multiple CEOs perform less CSR than those with a single CEO. This paper is meaningful in that it studied CSR activities such as ESG management in connection with CEO characteristics of lodging companies. In particular, it differs from previous studies in that it studied the nationality and number of CEOs rather than the demographic characteristics of CEOs for which many studies have been conducted.
경영자특성이 경영성과에 미치는 영향 : 숙박업 외부감사대상법인의 경영자 국적과 수를 중심으로

The purpose of this paper is to verify the effects of chief executive officers’ (CEO) characteristics of lodging companies on corporate performance. The CEO is a critical factor affecting corporate performance in all companies including lodging companies. Many studies have been conducted to identify the characteristics of CEOs in adjoining disciplines such as business administration and managerial accounting. In the field of hotel management, however, there are no active researches on CEO characteristics due to various constraints. In this paper, the nationality and the number of CEOs of a company are selected as CEO characteristics and the corporate performance is measured by productivity and profitability. Productivity is measured by value added ratio and total capital investment efficiency, and profitability is measured by return on sales and return on assets. The analyses are conducted for lodging companies audited by external auditors from 2000 to 2016. The results show that the productivity of lodging companies with foreign CEOs is significantly higher than those with Korean CEOs. The productivity of lodging companies with multiple CEOs is found to be partly higher than with single CEOs. However, the nationality of the CEO does not significantly affect the profitability of lodging companies. The number of CEOs does not significantly affect the profitability of the lodging company as well. In conclusion, CEO characteristics have a significantly positive impact on the productivity of lodging companies, but not on the profitability. Foreign or multiple CEOs of lodging companies seem to be able to increase productivity partly through efficient management, but they do not lead to profitability improvement. It seems plausible that the profitability can be increased only by a CEO's experience, education, and competency rather than the nationality and the number of CEOs. This paper has contributed to the study of CEO characteristics that are rarely examined in lodging companies. In particular, this is the first study to examine the effects of the nationality and the number of CEOs on corporate performance. It is recommended to consider the implications of this study when choosing a CEO in lodging companies. 본 논문의 목적은 숙박업기업의 경영자특성이 경영성과에 미치는 영향을 검증하는 것이다. 숙박업기업은 물론이고 모든 기업에 있어 경영자는 경영성과에 영향을 미치는 매우 중요한 요인이다. 경영학, 관리회계학 등 인접 학문에서는 경영자의 특성을 규명하려는 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있으나 호텔경영학 분야에서는 여러 제약으로 인해 활발한 연구가 수행되지 않고 있다. 본 논문에서는 경영자특성으로 경영자의 국적과 경영자의 숫자를 선정하였고, 경영성과는 생산성과 수익성을 측정하였다. 생산성은 부가가치율과 총자본투자효율, 수익성은 매출액순이익률과 총자산순이익률로 측정하였다. 2000년부터 2016년까지의 외부감사법인 숙박업기업을 대상으로 분석한 결과, 경영자가 외국인인 숙박업기업의 생산성은 유의하게 높은 것으로 나타났다. 경영자가 복수인 숙박업기업의 생산성은 일부유의하게 높은 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 경영자의 국적은 숙박업기업의 수익성에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 경영자의 숫자도 숙박업기업의 수익성에 유의한 영향을 미치지 않았다. 결론적으로, 경영자특성은 숙박업기업의 생산성에 대체적으로 유의한 양의 영향을 미치나 수익성에는 유의한 영향을미치지 않는다. 숙박업기업의 외국인 경영자 또는 복수 경영자는 효율적 관리를 통해 생산성을 일부높이기는 하지만 수익성의 향상으로 까지 이끌지는 못하는 것으로 판단된다. 경영자의 경험, 학력, 역량 등의 요인이 아닌 단지 국적과 숫자라는 요인만으로 수익성을 높일 수 없다는 것은 일견 타당해 보인다. 본 논문은 숙박업기업에서 거의 이루어지지 않은 경영자특성에 대해 연구했다는 공헌점이있다. 특히, 경영자국적과 경영자숫자가 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 대해 검증한 최초의 연구라는 점에서 의미하는 바가 크다. 실무적으로, 숙박업기업에서는 경영자를 선임할 때 본 연구의 시사점을 고려해 봄직하다.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the role of primary care facilities and their support measures in response to coronavirusdisease 2019 (COVID-19) and to identify challenges to achieving public–private cooperation in South Korea. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four leading experts were selected and recruited to participate in this iterative web-based Delphistudy. An open-ended questionnaire was administered to collect the expert panel’s views in the first round. In the second round,the panel was asked to rate on a 5-point Likert scale their agreement with individual items gleaned from qualitative content analysisof views expressed in the first round. The participants were offered the opportunity to reevaluate and correct their initial responses insubsequent rounds. Responses in the second and following rounds were analyzed using quantitative descriptive statistics. Results: The first and second rounds were completed by 54.2% (n=13/24) and 58.3% (n=14/24) of the selected panel, respectively,while 10 out of these 14 participants completed the third round. The panel cited in-person essential medical services, telehealthfor fever/respiratory symptoms, surveillance for influenzae-like illness, and minimization of spread to staff as important and appropriateroles of primary care, which are urgent and feasible during a pandemic. Regarding conditions/support for these roles, thepanel indicated that institutional support and funding for separate areas, workforce, and telehealth, along with public-private collaborativegovernance, are urgent, but not feasible. Conclusion: This study provides guidance on strategies for continuing the required roles of primary care and highlights a need tostrengthen public-private partnerships during pandemic events in Korea.
