Extensive selection works on wild yeasts of fruits were carried cut to obtain strains which are applicable to apple wine making. Among the total number of 1,358 yeast strains which were isolated from various fruit samples collected from the vicinity of Daejeon and other regions of Korea, the strains SH-49, SH-129 and SH-338 were found to be useful. Then experiments on their morphological and physiological characteristics, and on the aspects of practical use in apple wine making were proceeded. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The strains SH-49 and SH-129, particularly SH-49, were appeared to have good fermentation ability, tolerance to sulfur dioxide and to produce fine quality of apple wine. 2. Apple wines made by using the strain, SH-49 and SH-129 contained less amount of total acids than those by other strains. 3. Apple wines of SH-49 and SH-129 were clarified rapidly during the primary fermentation period, and their absorbancy at 430 nm after 45 days of storage were approximately half of others. 4. Apple wine of SH-338 contained higher amount of residual sugar and its quality was superior to others. It is considered that this strain could be used in the production of apple wine of a characteristic quality. 5. The strains SH-49 and SH-338 were identified as a Saccharomyces cerevisiae according to Taxanomic Study of Yeasts by Lodder, however, classification of SH-129 was suspended for further study.

The College of Engineering was specialized to have a sole function for supplying technical high school teachers in 1977 and referred to as the College of Industrial Education according to the Government's policy. The economic impact mainly due to the oil-crises caused a severe problem to this college, namely discrepancy of supply to demand scale. Accordingly the number of student enrollment was to be fluctuated from 479 in 1979 through 800 in 1979 and 900 in 1980 to 430 in 1981. And the engineering departments have been attached to this Engineering Education College since 1981. These circumstanses met singnificant inefficiency in facility operation. This program aims at providing an overall relocation of the college facilities and preparing the practical system to make the joint-operation possible taking into account circulation, academic stream, budget, maintenance, etc. However this study could not get optimal spacing but some trade-off, considering the current situation.

Responses to chemotherapy correlate with the increased dose of chemotherapeutic agents in some cancers, e.g. breast cancer, Ewing's sarcoma, Hodgkin's disease(HD) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma(NHL), then for the improvement of the chemotherapy responsiveness, high-dose chemotherapy(HDCT) was proposed. But, it's application was limited due to complications, especially bone marrow suppression. HDCT and succeeding autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation(APBSCT) was introduced to overcome this problem. This study was designed to determine the clinical pictures including clinical parameters and the responsiveness of HDCT followed by APBSCT in Hanyang University Hospital. Ten patients were enrolled. They were 8 adults (3 breast cancers, 3 multiple myelomas, 1 HD, 1 NHL) and 2 children (1 acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), 1 neuroblastoma). Mobilization chemocherapy(MCT) followed by Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor(G-CSF) was administered to mobilize stem cells from bone marrow to peripheral blood. The stem cells were collected by using CS-3000 and cryopreserved at -196℃ with programmed controlled rate freezer as the mixture with 10% dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO). HDCT was administered and cryopreserved peripheral stem cells were infused on day 0 as planned. Patients' mean age was 41 years old. After induction chemotherapy three patients achieved complete response and 5 partial response. The median time for bone marrow recovery after MCT was 11.5 days for neutrophil(〉500/㎣) and 4.8 days for platelet(〉20,000/㎣). There were three cases of neutropenic fever and one case of gingivitis. After HDCT with APBSCT, one patient was converted partial response to complete response, and one patient achieved complete response after HDCT without induction chemotherapy. The median time for bone marrow recovery was 12.7 days for neutrophil(〉500/㎣) and 14.7 days for platelet(〉20,000/㎣). Eight patients developed neutropenic fever and required systemic antibiotics. Transfusion was required 1.6 pints for packed red cell and 23.4 pints for platelet concentrates. Toxicity consisted mainly of vomiting, diarrhea, and mucositis which were mild. HDCT with APBSCT can be performed safely with minimal complications. For the evaluation of the exact role of HDCT with APBSCT in malignant diseases, further studies are required as a large scale of patients and lung-term follow up.

Background: Onychomycosis, especially toenail onychomycosis has become one of the common fungal infection and has historically been regarded as a cosmetic rather than medical problem by many patients, even by physicians. Recently, however, there are several reports that is a refractory disease which may cause a deleterious effect on patiets quality of life (QOL). Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of toenail onychomycosis on QOL in Korea and to assess the chandes of QOL after treatment. Methods: Total 1004 patients with toenail onychomycosis which was confirmed by clinical findings and KOH preparation were were enrolled at 47 dermatologic centers in Korea, and interviewed with standardized QOL questionnaire before and after sytemic antifungal treatment. Responses to the questionnaire were scored by 5-point scale (1∼4) and averaged, and were analyzed for 5 dimensions of emotional impact, social impact, symptorn and functional impact, patients views concerning treatment, and relationship with doctor. Results: 1. Before and after treatment, the most serious impact was emotional dimension showing 1.90 and 1.30 in average score (AS), and social (AS: 1.14 and 0.83) and symptom and functional impact (AS: 1.05 and 0.92) was also affected. 2. In female rather than male, statistically more significant impact on patients QOL was observed in all dimensions. 3. After treatment, 3 of 5 dimensions were improved significantly - emotional dimension (AS : from 1.90 to 1.30), social dimension (AS: from 1.14 to 0.83), patients view concerning treatment (AS: from 1.34 to 1.02). 4. The drgree of patients satisfaction at the therapeutic effect was very high- 62.4% (immediately after treatment) and 65.8% (9 months affer initiation of treatment) of patients answered excellent or good. Conclusion: This study confirms that toenail onychomycosis has significant impact on the overall QOL of patients. Also the effect of antifungal therapy on patients QOL were watisfactory. Therefore, both doctor and patient should pay more attention to the treatment of onychomycosis. [Kor J Med Mycol 3(1): 115∼124]

BACKGROUND: Heart transplantation is still the best therapy for end-stage heart disease. However, the longterm outcome among different institutions vary. The current series is an assessment of the important factors which determine prognosis. METHODS: Between November of 1992 and September of 2000, 85 heart transplantations were performed at our institution. The standard technique was used in the first 57 patients (group I) where as in the latter 28 patients (group II), the Bicaval technique was utilized. The mean waiting time was approximately 4.7 months, and the causes in decreasing order were Dilated cardiomyopathy (n=69), Ischemic cardiomyopathy (n=10), Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and others (n=6). The mean follow up was about 31 months. The immunosuppressive protocol comprised cyclosporin, Azathioprine (AZA), and prednisone. Later changes included induction with IL-2 receptor monoclonal antibody and changing AZA to mycophenolate mofetil. RESULTS: The mean donor ischemic time was 95.8 28.3 mins and the implantation time was 59.3 7.6 mins. There was a higher incidence of significant TR in group I along with a greater postoperative pacing requirement. There were 35 postoperative complications of which infectious events were most common (26). Of these, only 3 were early infections and the rest occurred late postoperatively. There were a total of 8 mortalities of which only one occurred early postoperatively and among the 7 late deaths, 3 were medically related and 4 were related to social factors. Only 5% of the patients had graft vascular disease. The overall 1YSR was 92% and the 5 YSR was 85%. CONCLUSIONS: The superior long term results of this current series was attributable to strong early immunosuppression, a homogenous population, and very low incidence of CMV infection.
