        In case of exchange of intraocular lenses(IOL) in pseudophakia, errors can happen in measuring axial length because of existing IOL. Therefore, we examined the accuracy of axial length measurement in pseudophakia by measuring axial lengths of pre- and post-operation. Eighty nine eyes of 77 patients were divided into four groups in the order of description (AMO SI3ONB, Staar AQ2003V, Pharmacia 720A, and HOYA UY-60SA) : Group 1 and 2 for silicone lenses, and 3 and 4 for PMMA lenses. We compared pre- and post-operative axial lengths with Ocuscan (Alcon, U.S.A.). The postoperative axial lengths were measured by phakic, aphakic, and pseudophakic mode. In pseudophakic mode, the velocity in IOL part was set at the rate of 980 and 1532 m/sec for Group 1 and 2, and 1532 and 2718 m/sec for Group 3 and 4. The preoperative average axial lengths of four groups were 23.34, 22.92, 22.88 and 23.73 mm, respectively. The postoperative average axial lengths of Group 1 and 2 were 23.20 and 23.07 mm at the rate of 980 m/sec in pseudophakic mode, and for Group 3 and 4, the lengths were 22.88 and 23.81 mm at the rate of 2718 m/sec in pseudophakic mode, and they were very close to the preoperative values. We can get the closest values to preoperative axial length by setting the velocity in pseudophakic mode at the rate of 980 m/sec for silicone lens and 2718 m/sec for PMMA lens.

      • 다공질 실리콘 센서를 이용한 알코올 용액의 농도 측정

        A capacitance-type sensor using porous silicon layer was developed to measure aqueous alcohol concentration. Since alcohol, so called ethanol, is very permeable into the silicon wafer, it is often used to help chemical reaction when the silicon wafer is processed under some aqueous solution. In this work, the sensing property was measured for the alcohol concentration from zero to near 100 percent with two types of samples with porous silicon layer formed in 25 and 35% HF solution, respectively. Good reliability as well asw fast response time and good linearity were shown over 10㎑, and the measured capacitance was observed to be inverse to alcohol concentration due to the decrease of the whole dielectric constant in porous silicon layer.

        비만 개선 효과를 지닌 탄수화물 및 지방 흡수 억제 기능성 식이조성물 개발

        In a previous study, we developed a new food additive as an egg yolk antibody (IgY) against carbohydrate digestion enzymes for the regulation of blood glucose level and weight control. The IgY delayed and decreased the increment of blood glucose level after administration of sucrose in human being by 30% in 20∼30 min. We also developed a lipase inhibitor as a water extract of two kinds of herb, Platycodon grandiflorum and Solanum melongena. Twenty three volunteers were subjected to the intake of the egg yolk IgY plus the herbal extracts for 50 days. In average, the treated subjects appeared to lose 1.96 ㎏ of body weight and 3.4 ㎏ of body fat mass during the treated period. Furthermore, Panniculus adiposus and breech size were significantly decreased during the experimental period. Above results suggested that the administration of the dietary additives composed of egg yolk IgY and natural herbal extract improve the obesity by the decrement of body weight and body fat mass.

      • Metallo-β-lactamase 생성 Pseudomonas aeruginosa 및 포도당 비발효그람음성간균의 검출방법에 관한 연구

        연구목적: Metallo-β-lactamse (MBL)는 carbepenem를 포함하는 대부분의 β-lactam 항균제를 가수분해할 수 있으므로 MBL 생성균의 확산은 이들 균에 의한 감염의 치료에 큰 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 따라서 MBL 생성균에 의한 감염의 확산을 막기 위해 이들 균의 조기 검출이 필요하다. 저자들은 MBL 생성균을 검출할 수 있는 세 가지 방법을 PCR 방법과 비교하여 보았다. 재료 및 방법: Imipenem의 MIC가 8 μg/mL 이상인 50개의 포도당 비발효 그람음성 간균을 대상으로 EDTA-double disk synergy test (EDTA-DDS), Etest MBL, Hodge 변법을 시행하였으며 대조 검사로 IMP-1, VIM-1, VIM-2에 대한 PCR을 시행하였다. 결과: 총 50 균주 중 MBL 생성균은 Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1 균주, Alcaligenens xylosxidans 7 균주 등 8 균주(16%)가 검출되었다. 이들 균주는 모두 VIM-2 형이었으며, EDTA-DDS, Etest MBL은 PCR 방법과 100% 일치하였다. Hodge 변법은 8 MBL 생성균주 중 2 균주를 검출하지 못했다. 결론: 50 균주 중 8 균주가 MBL 생성균이었고 모두 VIM-2 형이었다. Etest MBL은 가격이 비싸 검사실에서는 EDTA-DDS가 적당할 것으로 사료된다. Purpose: Because metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) has activity to hydrolysls against most β-lactam drugs, dissemination of MBL producing bacteria may cause problems of treatment of infection by their microorganisms. Early detection or screening for MBLs will contribute to prevent further spread of resistance. Authors compared three MBL detection methods with PCR for MBLs. Materials and Methods: For 50 isolates of g1ucose nonfermentative gram negative bacilli with reduced susceptability against imipenem (MIC≥8 μg/mL), EDTA-double disk synergy (EDTA-DDS), Etest MBL and modified Hodge test were compared with PCR detection method for MBLs. Results: Among 50 isolates of glucose nonfermentative microorganisms, eight MBL producers including a Pseudomonas aeruginosa and 7 Alcaligenes xylosoxidans were detected. Those isolates were VIM-2 producer. The results of EDTA-DDS and Etest MBL completely agreed with PCR for MBL detection. Two isolates among eight MBL Producers were not detected in modified Hodge test. Conclusion: All of MBL producing bacteria were VIM-2 genotype. In conclusion, EDTA-DDS may be useful method for MBL detection in clinical laboratory due to high cost of Etest MBL strip.

      • 생체분해성 고분자를 이용한 사시수술용 제형개발 및 효용성에 대한 연구

        A new device, muscle clamping system was developed to facilitate exact quatifying technique A strabismus surgery, and reduce the risk of complications. The device is composed of a lower fixing body with three jaws and an upper supporting body. They are used to clip an extraocular muscle and fix it to the sclera with a single bite. Superior rectus recession on 16 rabbit eyes were performed with this new device. Conjunctival injection, muscle adhesion strength, and light microscopic findings were examined at 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks postoperatively. The Conjunctival injection were minimal, adhesion power ranged from 420 to 600 gram gravity, which is sufficient in withstand the normal pull of human extraocular muscle. In microscopic exam, some Inflammatory cells and fibrosis were found. The new device was technically easy, fast, and accurate, so it may be useful in stabismus surgery.

      • 생체분해성 망막압정을 이용한 망막고정에 대한 실험적 연구

        Biodegradable retinal fixation devices obtain mechnical fixation of the retina with desirable chorioretinal scarring and with the potential for local, sustained release of antimetabolites and steroids to inhibit proliferative vitreoretinopathy. We manufactured a biodegradable retinal tack with barb that was designed in order to prevent intrusion from implantation of retinal tacks. This study was carried to evaluate the efficacy for retinal fixation and the capability for sustained release of drugs with a newly designed biodegradable retinal tack Biodegradable retinal tacks were made of polymers of glycolic acids and were designed with barbs in a shape to prevent the disinsertion. Biodegradale retinal tacks are divided into 3 parts, a conical portion that is inserted into the sclera, a cylinder portion that remains in the vitreous, and a neck portion between the pin and the cylinder. The tapered conical end was manufactured to allow easy insertion through the retina and choroid into the sclera. A cylinder portion was manufactured with a tapered angle that fixes firmly into the orifice of 19 gauge spinal needle. A neck portion, 0.4 mm in diameter, was designed to prevent disinsertion from following implantation of retinal tack. The applicator was a 19 gauge spinal needle and its orifice was prepared to 15°angle to accept the tapered cylinder portion of the retinal tack. The retinal tacks, secured in the needles, were passed through the formed vitreous and inserted into the retina, choroid, and sclera and were released by pushing the internal needle, usually within 2-3mm of the medullary ray of the posterior rabbit retina A retinal tack was placed in each of 8 pigmented rabbit eyes. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy and fundus photography were performed periodically from 1 day to 8 weeks after surgery. Eight eyes were enucleated and studied by light microscopy at 8 weeks. Biomicroscopic evaluation of the animals revealed edemas adjacent to the retinal surfaces immediately after insertion of the biodegradable retinal tacks in all the animals. These edemas disappeared after 1 week. The first noticeable change in the size of retinal tacks was shown after 2weeks. The size of the retinal tacks gradually got smaller, decreasing to about one-half at 4 weeks and about one-third at 8 weeks. All retinal tacks remained in inserted places without any movement for an 8 week period. On light microscopy, epiretinal proliferations were seen to extend into the vitreous cavity. Cellular capsules that lined the inner aspect of the scleral defect caused by tack insertion were found. However the adjacent retina had a normal cytologic appearance and architecture in all specimens. We manufactured a biodegradable retinal tack that is designed to prevent intrusion from implantation of retinal tacks. All biodegradable retinal tacks reduce in size with time, but no retinal tacks extruded from the inserted place. The newly designed biodegradable retinal tack can be used for retinal fixation and may be used as a vehicle for the introduction of pharmacologic agents to prevent the cellular events that promote proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

      • Regional Diffrerences in Enhanced Neurogenesis in the Dentate Gyrus of Adult Rats after Transient Forebrain Ischemia

        Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus occurs throughout life. We observed regional differences in neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of adult rats following transient forebrain ischemia. Nine days after ischemic-reperfusion or sham manipulation, rats were given 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine-5'-monophosphate (BrdU), a marker for dividing cells. They were killed 1 or 28 days later to distinguish between cell proliferation and survival. Neurogenesis was evaluated by BrdU incorporation as well by identifying neuronal and glial markers in six regions of the dentate gyrus: rostral, middle and caudal along the rostrocaudal axis, each further divided into suprapyramidal and infrapyramidal blade subregions. In control rats BrdU-positive cells in the rostral subregions were significantly lower in the suprapyramidal than in the infrapyramidal blades at both 1 and 28 days after BrdU injection. One day after infection, BrdU-positive cells had increased more in five of the subregions in the ischemic rats than in the controls, the exception being the suprapyramidal blade of the rostral subregion. At 28 days after BrdU injection, numbers of BrdU-positive cells were higher in four subregions in the ischemic group, the exceptions being the rostral suprapyramidal and middle infrapyramidal blades. At 28 days after BrdU injection, the percentages of BrdU positive cells that expressed a neuronal marker (NeuN) were the same in the dentate granule cell layers of ischemic and control rats. Our data thus demonstrate regional differences in enhanced neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of adult rats after transient forebrain ischemia.

        Metal recovery by aged beads prepared using cell-suspension from the waste of beer fermentation broth

        Lead, copper, and cadmium were adsorbed onto aged calcium alginate beads containing cell-suspension from the waste of beer fermentation broth. Beads prepared by adding 0.6% (w/v) sodium alginate into the cell suspension from the waste of beer fermentation broth and making the cell suspension drop into the 1% (w/v) calcium alginate solution were stored in the 1% (w/v) calcium chloride solution for 1 year. The specific metal uptake of the aged cell-suspension immobilized bead was 312 mg Pb2+, 158 mg Cu2+, and 112 mg Cd2+/g bead dry weight at pH 7.5 of the metal solution, respectively. The relation between the specific metal uptake by the aged cell-suspension immobilized beads and the equilibrium metal concentration was nonlinearly regressed and well described by the Freundlich isotherm. The specific cadmium uptake capacity of aged cell-suspension immobilized beads was between the specific cadmium uptake capacities of commercial beads Duolite GT-73 and Amberite IRA-400 and higher than those of the fresh Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 834 and Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 24858 immobilized beads.
