In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

3,4-Dihydroquinazoline 1 as T-type calcium channel blocker was in vivo evaluated against A549 xenograft in BALB/c-nu Slc mice, which exhibited 54% tumor growth inhibition through oral administration of 8 mg/kg of body weight and was slightly less active than doxorubicin (68%). In addition, this compound was also profiled for its acute toxicity to ICR mice to afford oral LD50 value of 1,038 mg/kg of body weight.

Industrial Complex in Ulsan is one of the most important areas in the nation. It includes ship building, automobile production, petroleum industry, non-metalic industry, and related industries. However, water for drinking and industry use has been and will be short seriously. Thus available drinking water sources were searched. By rebuilding the two existing dams 20m higher than the present levels, 500,000m^3/day(for 200days) of water sources may be produced. Additional volume of 13,000㎥/day(for 200days) can be obtained by a number of small dam construction in the vincity area. Underground water of about 50,000㎥/day may also be available. The total of 680,000㎥/day could be produced in Ulsan area, which is enought for the population of 1,200,000 in Ulsan area even after year 2011. This newly searched volume of water may be free from pollution. Raising the dam levels may also prevent Ulsan city from chronic flooding problems. Additional advantage is that as much as the newly developed water resources can be supplied to the industrial complexes.

<P><B><I>Background:</I></B> We retrospectively investigated the treatment outcomes of second-line treatment with pazopanib or gemcitabine/docetaxel in patients with advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS). <B><I>Methods:</I></B> Ninety-one patients who were treated with pazopanib or gemcitabine/docetaxel for advanced STS between 1995 and 2015 were analyzed. <B><I>Results:</I></B> Forty-six and 45 patients received pazopanib and gemcitabine/docetaxel, respectively. The median progression-free survival for the group treated with pazopanib was 4.5 months compared with 3.0 months for the gemcitabine/docetaxel group (<I>p</I> = 0.593). The median overall survival for the group treated with pazopanib was 12.6 months compared with 14.2 months for the gemcitabine/docetaxel group (<I>p</I> = 0.362). The overall response rates (ORRs) were 6.5 and 26.7% in the pazopanib and gemcitabine/docetaxel groups, respectively. The following parameters had ORRs favoring gemcitabine/docetaxel: age ≥50 years (31.6 vs. 2.9%, <I>p</I> = 0.006), histologic grade 1–2 (40.9 vs. 0%, <I>p</I> = 0.001), and poor first-line treatment response (23.3 vs. 3.0%, <I>p</I> = 0.022). Gemcitabine/docetaxel was associated with better ORRs for the following histologic subtypes: leiomyosarcoma (<I>p</I> = 0.624), malignant fibrous histiocytoma/undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (<I>p</I> = 0.055), and angiosarcoma (<I>p</I> = 0.182). However, the ORR of synovial sarcoma favored pazopanib (<I>p</I> = 0.99). <B><I>Conclusions:</I></B> The efficacies of pazopanib and gemcitabine/docetaxel as second-line treatments after doxorubicin or ifosfamide failure differed among clinical and histologic subgroups and appeared to facilitate a more personalized treatment approach for advanced STS.</P>

The azuki bean in Korea consists of seven domestic varieties which have been developed and registered for the public during last 25 years. Here, we present a simple but reliable method to screen and identify Korean azuki bean varieties. A method based on simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers is widely used for prominent gene identification and variety discrimination. In molecular biology, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a laboratory technique based on the polymerase chain reaction that is used to amplify and simultaneously quantify a targeted DNA molecule. It enables easy detection of a specific sequence in a DNA sample without performing electrophoresis and further processes. For separation of seven Korean azuki bean varieties, 110 unique azuki bean SSR markers from an (AG)n-enriched library were selected, synthesized and used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Data were taken through acrylamide gel electrophoresis and automated multi-capillary electrophoresis system for selection of specific markers and then changed into proper formats for data mining analysis. Ten primer pairs that showed high polymorphism were chosen for the indepth study. These ten primers were re-amplified with real-time PCR and checked the cycle threshold (Ct) and temperature (Tm) for comparison of amplification sequence in seven varieties. Consequently, a total of 20 alleles and 6 SSR primers were detected from the standard PCR amplification. Within these 6 primers, 7 alleles of 3 SSR primers were isolated for variety identification. From real-time PCR results, 3 SSR primers were selected as efficient markers for discrimination of seven Korean azuki bean varieties. The approach described here could be applied in monitoring our varieties and can be adapted in the azuki bean breeding program.
Comparison of K-index Calculations between Several Geomagnetic Stations during IQDs and IDDs

BOH magnetometer was installed at Mt. Bohyun in 2007 and has provided continuous dataset for 3-axis geomagnetic field over the South Korea. We have calculated real-time K-index based on BOH magnetic field data using well-known FMI method. Local K-index is calculated eight times a day, per every three hours. To calculate K-index, it is critical to get the Quiet Day Curve (QDC). For QDC calculation, we take the previous one month’s average of H-component. In this paper, we compared four geomagnetic stations’ magnetic field data over South Korea and Japan and K-indices of each stations; Bohyun, Gangneung, Jeju, and Kakioka for two years data, 2011-2012. To investigate the difference depending on the latitude, longitude and local time in more detail, we compare K-index on International Quiet Days (IQDs) and International Disturbed Days (IDDs). As a result, we report the correlation between local K-indices are higher than those between Kp and local K-indices, and the correlation is much better after sunset than after sunrise. As the geomagnetic activity becomes stronger, the correlation between the local K-indices and global Kp-index become higher.

Carcinoma of the breast has been treated by surgery followed by irradiation of the chest wall and regional lymphatics treatment planning of the breast cancer is required that lung must be spared as much as possible. However megavoltage irradiation of the internal mammary chain results in high dose to underlying heart, esophagus and spinal cord. Electron beam can be used for the irradiation of the internal mammary chain instead of megavoltage beam. We studied dose distribution of single anterior electron field, compared with traditional treatment methods. 12 and 15MeV electron beam with bolus has good dose distribution to spare underlying lung tissue and other organs.
