        Background: Superior colliculus is a part of midbrain, and participates in the visual reflexes, It receives afferent fibers from optic nerve, visual cortex, and spinotectal tract. After optic deprivation, the microscopic structure of the superior colliculus changed. Calcium-binding proteins (CBPs) Play an important role in the neuronal protection, differentiation and reorganization of the central nervous system, Objectives and Methods: The effects of neonatal retinal deafferentation on a CBPs, calbindm D-28k (CB), Parvalbumin (PB) and calretimn (CR), and the existence of colocalization between the CBPs were examined immunohistochemically in the rat superior colliculus. Results: On the experimental (contralateral to enucleation) side of superior colliculus, the number of CB-immunoreactive (IR) cells was reduced (77.4% compared to control), but not fibers. The number of PB-IR neurons and fibers was also reduced on the experimental side (88.5% compared to control), In the other hand, the CR-IR cells were dramatically increased (642% compared to control), but CR-IR fibers were markedly decreased on the experimental side. The colocalization between CB-CR and PV-CR was rarely observed in the superior colliculus Conclusion: These results suggest that the changes of retinotectal projection may alter the expressional pattern of CBPs in different manners; relatively stable in CB- and PV-IR neurons and plastic in CR-IR neurons.

      • 간경변증과 간세포암 환자에서 원인에 따른 Child-Pugh 점수, PGA 지수와 MELD 점수간의 상관관계

        서론: 간경증변의 정도를 정량적으로 측정하는 것은 여러 면에서 매우 중요하며, 이의 척도로 Child-Pugh 점수를 가장 보편적으로 이용되고 있고, 또 다른 척도로서 PGA 지수와 MELD 점수가 이용되고 있다. 이에 저자들은 간경변 환자와 이에 동반된 간세포암 환자에서 각각 알콜에 의한 경우와 바이러스성 간염에 의한 경우로 나누고, 각각에서의 Child-Pugh 점수, PGA 지수와 MELD 점수를 측정하고, 이들 척도간의 상관 관계와 각각의 원인에 따른 척도간의 차이를 비교 분석하였다. 대상과 방법: 2000년 3월부터 2002년 7월까지 알코올과 B형 간염바이러스에 의한 간경변증 또는 간세포암으로 진단된 339명의 환자에 대해 챠트를 분석하여, 간경변증과 이에 병발된 간세포암으로 진단된 경우로 구분하고 각 원인에 따라 네가지군으로 분류하였다: 알코올에 의한 간경변증 환자군: LC-Al, B형 간염 바이러스에 의한 간경변증 환자군: LC-B, 알코올에 의한 간경변증에 병발된 간세포암 환자군: HCC-Al,B형 간염 바이러스에 의한 간경변증에 병발된 간세포암 환자군: HCC-B. 각 네군 환자의 Child-Pugh 점수, PGA 지수와 MELD 점수를 측정하여 이를 비교 분석하였다. 결과: 총 399명 중 간경변으로만 진단된 환자는 201명 (LC-Al: 100명, LC-B: 101명)이었고, 간경변을 동반한 간세포암으로 진단된 환자는 138명 (HCC-Al: 31명, HCC-B: 107명)이었다. Child-Pugh 점수, PGA 지수 및 MELD 점수의 평균값은 각 군간의 통계학적인 차이가 없었다. 모든 환자군에서의 Child-Pugh 점수와 PGA 지수간의 상관관계는 정비례 관계를 보였으며(LC-Al 0.602, LC-B 0.770, HCC-Al 0.435, HCC-B 0.502), Child-Pugh 점수와 MELD 점수간의 상관 관계는 또한 정비례 관계이었다(0.548, 0.794, 0.708, 0.670). PGA 지수와 MELD 점수간의 상관 관계는 HCC-Al 군을 제외한(0.236) 다른 세 군에서 정비례 관계를 보였다(0.419, 0.622, 0.348). 질환별 상관 관계는 간세포암이 병발된 환자군보다 간경변증만 있는 환자군에서 상관계수 값이 더 높은 경향을 보였고, 원인별 상관 관계는 알코올에 의한 환자군보다 B형 간염 바이러스에 의한 경우에 상관계수 값이 더 높은 경향을 보였다. 결론: 간경변증 환자와 간세포암 환자에서 Child-Pugh 점수, PGA 지수와 MELD 점수간의 상관 관계는 정비례하였다. 간경변증만 있는 환자에서 간세포암 환자에 비해 각지수간의 상관계수 값이 높은 경향을 보였고, 원인이 B형 간염 바이러스인 경우에 알코올인 경우 보다 상관계수 값이 높은 경향을 보였다. Background/Aims: to determine the treatment modalities and the prognosis of a patient with liver cirrhosis, quantitative estimation of liver function is important. We assessed the Child-Pugh score (CPS), the common method as a severity index for the cirrhosis, the Promthombin, Υ-GT, and Apolipoprotein Al (PGA) index and model for end-stage liver disease(MELD) score. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between these indices in the patients with cirrhosis only and hepatocellular carcinoma (PHC), according to underlying causes (HBV and alcohol). Methods: We reviewed medical records of 339 cirrhotic patients with/without hepatocellular carcinoma and divided patient groups by disease and underlying cause: cirrhosis caused by alcohol; LC-Al, hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis caused by HBV; HCC-B. We assessed the CPS, PGA index and MELD score and calculated the correlation coefficient between these scores. Results: Among the total of 399 patients, 201 patients were diagnosed on the liver cirrhosis only, and 138 patients on the hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis. In each groups, mean score values were not significantly different in CPS, PGA index and MELD score. The correlation of CPS, PGA index and MELD score in all groups, except for the correlation of PGA index and MELD score in HCC-Al group, was significantly positive (p<0.05). Compared to correlation coefficients between three indices, the patients with cirrhosis only had higher tendencies than the patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The patients by HBV had higher tendencies than by alcohol. Conclusions: The correlations between CPS, PGA index and MELD score showed significantly positive correlations in the patients with liver cirrhosis only and hepatocellular carcinoma with cirrhosis (except in HCC-Al group). The patients with cirrhosis only had higher correlation coefficients than the patients with PHC and patients by HBV had higher than by alcohol.

        A recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) was administered intravenously at dosage levels of 0, 100, 500, and 2500 IU/㎏/day for a period of 13 weeks. There were no observed clinical signs and deaths related to treatment in all groups tested. Decreases in body weight gain and food consumption were observed only in males of 2,500 IU/㎏ group after 2 weeks. In hematological parameters, erythrocyte content, hematocrit values and hemoglobin concentration were dose-dependently increased in rHuEPO treated groups. The ratio between kidney weight and whole body weight was significantly increased in females of 500 and 2,500 IU/㎏ groups. The spleen weight was also increased in both sexes of 500 and 2,500 IU/㎏ groups. However, the absolute weight change of other organs was not observed. In histopathological examinations, the renal tubular basophilia was observed only in males and females of 2,500 IU/㎏ groups. From these results, it is concluded that the no-observed adverse effect level(NOAEL) of rHuEPO is 100 IU/㎏ in rats in the present study.

        The effect of dehydrating agent in DMC(dimethyl carbonate) synthesis from methanol and carbon dioxide over Ce_(0.8)Zr_(0.2)O₂ catalyst was studied in this work. Ce_(0.8)Zr_(0.2)O₂ catalyst having the best activity among Ce_(1-x)Zr_(x)O₂ catalysts was selected. We could supposed that the addition of dehydrating agents improved the DMC yield by H₂O elimination. When the dehydrating agents such as Na_(2)SO₄ or K₂SO₄ was added into the synthesis of DMC, the formation amount of DMC increased to about 0.8∼0.9 mmol through the elimination of formed H₂O as by-product.

        지베렐린 처리가 땅콩 鍾間 交雜 親和性에 미치는 影響

        Interspecific crosses between three peanut cultivars(Arachis hypogaea) having different plant type, and four wild species, Arachis monticola, Arachis correntina, Arachis applisippla, Arachis rigonii were made by gibberellin(GA₃) treatment and the GA₃ effect on the interspecific crossability and growth of pollen tube in pistil was investigated. Pollen germination on the stigma and penetration of the pollen tubes into the style were increased by GA₃ treatment on the flower base. The GA₃ treatment increased pegging and pod formation up to 47% and 1.6% higher than those of control, respectively. Interspecific-crossability was varied with the combination of cultivar and wild species. Combination of Shipung-type variety Daekwangtangkong×wild species and Spanish-type variety Jinpungtangkong×wild species showed about 2% higher crossability than those of Virginia type variety Namdaetangkong×wild species. Arachis monticola among wild species showed the highest crossability with peanut cultivars, while Arachis correntina did the lowest. This result suggested that interspecific crossbility become higher in the cross between autoplyploids rather than those between allopolyploids.

        Four-week Repeated Dose Toxicity Study of Recombinant Human Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor by Subcutaneous Administration in Rats

        Toxic effects of recombinant human basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) were investigated in Sprague-Dawley rats by repeated subcutaneous administration. Four groups of 10 male and 10 female rats were treated with bFGF at doses of 0 (control), 40, 200, or 1000 ㎍/kg/day for 4 weeks. Additional 5 male and 5 female rats were used in control and high dose group to evaluate the reversibility of any treatment-related adverse effects. During the study, all rats survived until the end of the study. Noteworthy signs of toxicity at 200 ㎍/kg and above were swelling and subcutaneous cyst formation at the injection site. There were no remarkable changes in body weight, food and water consumption, ophthalmoscopy and urinalysis attributed to the bFGF treatment. Hematological examination showed increase in numbers of WBC and platelet, and decrease in RBC counts, hemoglobin concentration and hematocrit values at 200 and 1000 ㎍/kg groups with a dose-relation. In male rats from high dose group, a significant reduction of serum albumin was noted during the treatment and recovery period, which was thought to be due to edematous change of the injection site, at least in part. Absolute and relative liver weights increased in both sexes from high dose group. At necropsy, swelling and cyst formation at the injection site and splenomegaly were observed in high dose group and in some animals of middle dose group in a dose-related manner. Histopathological alterations were confined to the injection site and spleen. Proliferation of the capillaries and fibroblasts, focal hemorrhage and inflammatory cellular infiltration at the injection site, and congestion, megakaryocytic proliferation and the expansion of red pulp in the spleen were seen in bFGF-treated animals, which were more predominant in 1000 ㎍/kg group. At the end of the treatment, serum anti-bFGF IgG titer was elevated in all bFGF-treated rats in a dose-dependentfashion, indicating the test material, recombinant human bFGF (rh-bFGF), is the foreign protein to the rat to induce antibody formation. Most of treatment-related changes described above were thought to be associated with the pharmacological action of bFGF and were attenuated and disappeared after recovery phase. From the results, the target organs of bFGF when given to rats s.c. at doses up to 1000 ㎍/kg/day for 4 weeks were injection sites, blood cells, serum albumin and the spleen. Under the current test condition, the no-effect level of 40 ㎍/kg/day can be reported for both the male and female rats.
