        In Vitro Antiviral Activity of Ribavirin Against Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome Virus Myung Jin LEE1, Kye-Hyung KIM1, Jongyoun YI2, SuJin CHOI1, Chung-Jong KIM1, Nak- Hyun KIM1, Kyoung-Ho SONG1, Pyoeng Gyun CHOI1, Ji-Hwan BANG1, Wan Beom PARK1, Eu Suk KIM1, Sang-Won PARK1, Hong Bin KIM1, Nam Joong KIM1, Myoung- Don OH1 Seoul National University College of Medicine, Korea1, Pusan National University School of Medicine, Korea2 Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by a novel Bunyavirus, severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV). No effective antiviral therapy is proven yet, but clinical use of ribavirin (RBV) has been tried. We investigated the antiviral effect of RBV against SFTSV in vitro. Methods: To test for cytotoxicity of RBV, Vero cells were treated with different concentrations of RBV (3.90 to 500 μg/mL, two-fold dilution) and analyzed by cell viability MTS assay 48h post-infection. To determine antiviral activity of RBV against SFTSV, Vero cells were infected with SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 at 100 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) per well in a 96-well plate, and RBV was added at the concentrations showing no or minimal cytotoxicity. Viral RNAs were extracted from the culture supernatants and quantifi ed using one-step real-time reverse transcription- PCR to amplify the partial large segment of SFTSV. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA with Tukey`s post hoc test. Results: Cytotoxicity due to RBV was not observed at RBV concentration =31.3 μg/ mL. Viral RNAs at 24h post-RBV treatment were reduced with increasing RBV concentrations (1-32 μg/mL), compared with those of mock-treated cells (P <0.01, Figure). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RBV was 3.69 μg/mL at 24h post-RBV treatment. Conclusions: Our study shows that RBV has antiviral effect against SFTSV in a dose-dependent manner. Further studies are required to evaluate the effi cacy of RBV in SFTS.

        Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are common mesenchymal tumors that arise in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. We report a case of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding due to a GIST of the jejunum successfully documented by videocapsule endoscopy (VCE) and single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE). A 36-year-old man with hematochezia was referred for further evaluation of no evidence of bleeding focus on esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy. A VCE showed a suspicious ulcerative hyperemic mass that located in about 1 hour apart from duodenal second portion. SBE revealed a nonbleeding 4×2 cm mass with an ulcer at the proximal jejunum. The patient underwent laparoscopic resection without complication. Histological examination revealed a well circumscribed, dumbbell-shaped firm mass comprised of spindle cells. Immunohistochemical staining for CD 117 was diffusely positive, whereas staining for S-100, CD 34 and MIB-1 was all negative. It was confirmed to be a low-grade GIST at the proximal jejunum.

      • 都市 下水슬러지의 堆肥化에 關한 硏究

        Composting may be defined as a biochemical process in which microorganisms break down and convert solid organic matters into stable, humus like end products. The composting of municipal wastewater sludge has become an accepted technology as a means of sludge stabilization and resource recovery in recent years. Investigated in this study were the compostability of municipal sludge without the use of bulking agents, e.g., wood chips, tree barks, sow-dusts and rice-hulls ; relevant, influencing factors such as moisture contents, pH values, aeration rates, and volatile solid contents ; and process reaction rates. The sample sludges, obtained from Seoul Cheongye Sewage Treatment plant, were those digested and dewatered by mechanical means with the aid of lime and ferric chloride. The pH values, moisture contents, voltile solid contents and C/N ratios of the sample sludge ranged 10 to 12, 60 to 70%, 55 to 55% and 8 to 12, respectively. In this study, three, 35-liter reactors were used; the reactors were operated on batch basis for the duration of 8 to 12days. In order to maintain aerobic conditions and expect air drying effects, air was supplied to each reactor in the rates of 50-300 ℓ/㎥, main in the first half of experiments and fixed to 120ℓ/㎥. min in the second half. The mixture was mixed completely once a day by mechanical agitator. The results of this study follow; 1. The municipal sludge can be composted without the use of bulking agents. 2. The composting of the sole sludge without any additives can be carried out in reduced reaction periods 1 to 2 weeks. 3. The compost sludge can be used as both, the soil conditioner and low-nutrient fertilizer. It contained 35 to 40% moisture, 35 to 45% valatile solids, 1.9 to 2.2% nitrogen, 2.1 to 2.5% phosphorus and 0.18 to 0.22% potassium, and was 7.5 to 8.0 in pH values and 8 to 10 in C/N ratios. 4. The optimum pH values, aeration rates, and moisture contents were 7.5 to 8, approximately 120ℓ/㎥.min and 55 to 60%, respectively.

      • 제3형 개방성 경골 골절의 수술적 치료

        목 적: 저자들은 제3형 개방성 경골 골절로 수술적 치료를 시행한 환자의 결과를 분석하여 이에 대한 치료 지침을 제시하고자 한다. 대상 및 방법: 최근 7년간 본원에서 치료한 환자 42례를 대상으로 하였으며 연령 분포는 15세에서 76세로 남자가 35례, 여자가 7례였으며, 골절의 분류는 Ⅲa형 14례, Ⅲb형 20례, Ⅲc형 8례였다. 최종 기능적 평가는 Tucker의 분류법을 사용하였다. 결 과: 골 유합 기간은 Ⅲa이 9.2개월, Ⅲb형11.0개월, Ⅲc형이 13.8개월이었고 치료 기간 중 회전 피판 이식술과 유리 피판 이식을 시행하였으며 Ⅲc형에서는 골 연장술을 시행하였다. 기능적 평가로는 Ⅲc형로 갈수록 불량하였다 결 론: 비활성 조직의 충분한 제거, 노출 골편의 조기 피복 후 Ⅲa형에서는 골수강내 금속정을 이용한 견고한 내고정으로 좋은 결과를 얻을 수 있고 Ⅲb와, Ⅲc형에서는 외고정 기구를 사용하여 견고한 고정력을 얻을 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the functional outcome and propose the guidelines in the surgical treatment of open type Ⅲ tibial fracture. Materials and Methods: We have analyzed the treatment results of 44 cases; age was ranged from 15 to 76 years, and there were 35 males and 7 females. The type of fracture according to the classification by Gustilo revealed typeⅢa 14 cases, type Ⅲb 20 cases and type Ⅲc in 8 cases. We analyzed functional outcome according to the classification of functional result by Tucker. Results: The average union time of type Ⅲa was 9.2 months, Ⅲb 11.0 months, and Ⅲc was 13.8 months. The rotational flap and free flap were done during treatment and bone lengthening especially in type Ⅲc. Functional results were poor especially in type Ⅲc. Conclusion: Debridgement of devitalized tissue, early soft tissue coverage and sufficient stability using intramedullary nails will be necessary in type Ⅲa fracture. Rigid external fixation, early soft tissue coverage by rotational muscle flap and free flap reduced infection rate with satisfactory functional outcome especially in type Ⅲb and Ⅲc fractures.

      • 비만자의 운동수행이 혈중지질 및 혈청 효소에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of acute exercise on the blood lipids(Low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, High density lipoprotein-cholesterol) and serum enzyme (Aspartate aminotransferase, Alanine aminotransferase) in obesity. The subjects divided by two groups were normal(N=8) and obesity (N=8). This subjects were required to go through a maximum aerobic test. After the analysis of blood composition following results were concluded. The LDL -C compared of the normal and obesity groups were significant differences during rest (p<0.05) The LDL-C significant increased of normal group right after maximum exercise(p<0.001) The HDL-C compared of the normal and obesity groups were significant differences during rest (p<0.05) The HDL-C significant increased of both groups right after maximum exercise (p<0.01). The AST compared of the normal and obesity groups were significant differences during rest (p<0.01) and right after maximum exercise (p<0.05) The AST significant increased of both groups right after maximum exercise(p<0.001). The ALT compared of the normal and obesity groups were no significant in rest and right after maximum exercise. The ALT significant increased of both groups right after maximum exercise (p<0.01).

        Onposan has reputed to be effective for the remedy of sterility. In order to study the effects of Onposan on ovarian function, a series of experiments were conducted on the ovulation and serum LH, FSH, prolactin and estradiol 17-β level in rats and then the following results were obtained. 1. The increase of the dose of Onposan made a significant effect on ovulation induced PMSG. 2. The increase of the dose of Onposan made a significant effect on ovulation that on the induction of ovulation by PMSG and HCG. 3. The level of serum LH of rats induced hyperprolactinemia was significantly increased in the group of increase of the dose of Onposan. 4. The level of serum FSH of rats induced hyperprolactinemia was not significantly increased. 5. The level of serum Prolactin of rats induced hyperprolactinemia was not significantly increased. 6. The Level of serum Estradiol-17β of rats induced hyperprolactinemia was significantly increased.
