Objectives : Angelicae Radix, the root of Angelica gigas N_AKAI (Umbelliferae) , which has been used to nourish the blood(補血), regulate menstruation(調經), relieve pain and promote bowel movements(崩漏) and activate blood circulation for the treatment of fatigue, headache, constipation and blood troubles in traditional Korean medicine. It's flavour and channel tropism is sweet(甘), pungent(辛), warm(溫), acting on the lung, heart and spleen(肺, 心, 脾). The purpose of study we report here was to determine the neuroprotective effect of Angelica gigas on global ischemia induced by 4-vessel occlusion in Wistar rats. Methods : Angelica gigas extracts was lyphilized after extraction with 85% methanol. We induced 4-VO for 10 minutes and reperfused again. The number of CA1 pyramidal neurons were counted after 7 days of reperfusion under the cresyl violet staining. Results : The results showed that Angelica gigas had significantly neuroprotective effects (100, 250 and 500mg/kg of AR extracts, p<0.001) compared with control group. Each neuroprotective ratio was about 66.1, 79.3 and 78.6% respectively. Immunohistochemical data partially explained the protective effects of Angelica gigas via attenuation of COX-2 induction in hippocampus. Conclusion : Angelica gigas gas neuroprotective effects on the global ischemia induced by 4-vessel occlusion in Wistar rats and the attenuation of COX-2 induction is thought to be its possible mechanism.

유동상 생물반응기에 의한 난분해성물질이 포함된 염색-제지 혼합폐수처리

환경관리공단 대구사업소 폐수종말처리장으로 유입되는 염색-제지 혼합폐수를 대상으로 유동상 생물반응기로 담체충진율을 10%와 20%로 변화시키면서 처리한 결과, 담체충진율을 10%로 하여 BOD용적부하 1.52∼6.4㎏ BOD/㎥·day, COD용적부하 1.40∼4.81kg ??/㎥·day로 처리할 때 유출수의 평균 BOD는 216㎎/ℓ, 평균 ?? 농도는 241㎎/ℓ이었으며, BOD 및 ??의 평균제거율은 각각 73%, 65% 이었다. 담체를 20% 충진하여 BOD용적부하 1.8∼5.81㎏ BOD/㎥·day, COD용적부하 1.5∼4.85㎏ ??/㎥·day로 처리할 때 유출수의 평균BOD는 188㎎/ℓ, 평균 ?? 농도는 223㎎/ℓ이었으며, BOD 및 ??의 평균제거율은 각각 79%, 69%로 담체중진율 20%가 다소 높게 나타났다. 담체를 10% 충진한 경우 Y, ??는 각각 0.28(㎏ MLVSS/㎏ BOD)와 0.05(??)이었으며, 담체를 20% 충진한 경우의 Y, ?? 값은 0.30(㎏ MLVSS/㎏ BOD) 와 0.08(??)이었다. This study was performed to investigate the biological treatability and to determine the biokinetic coefficient by Fluidized Bio-reactor using 10% media and 20% media for dyeing and paper manufacture mixing wastewater of Taegu Namchun Sewage Treatment Plants. The dyeing and paper manufacture mixing wastewater contained BOD 601∼1.194mg/l and ??424∼812mg/ℓ was treated by Fluidized Bio-reactor. The conclusions are as follow : The 73% of BOD and 65% ?? were removed by Fluidized Bio-reactor using 10% media with the loading range of 0.5∼1.52kg BOD/kg MLVSS·day and 0.53∼1.24kg ??/kg MLVSS·day. The 79% of BOD and 69% ?? were removed by Fluidized Bio-reactor using 20% media with the loading range of 0.32∼0.8㎏ BOD/㎏MLVSS·day and 0.28∼0.66㎏ ??/㎏ MLVSS·day. The biomass yield coefficient(Y) and microbial decay coefficient(??) were shown as 0.28kg MLVSS/kg BOD and 0.05 ?? in using 10% media, and 0.30kg MLVSS/kg BOD and 0.08 ?? in using 20% media, respectively.

The authors observed the ultrastructures of the keratinocytes in the epidermis of dorsal skin of the four species in the Korean amphibia: Bombina orientalis; Kaloula borealis, Rana nigromaculata and Rana rugosa. The results were as follows: 1. Amphibian epidermis consisted of 5 or 6 layers of keratinocytes and were divided into four strata: stratum germinativum (1 cell layer), stratum spinosum (1 or 2 cell layers), stratum granulosum (1 or 2 cell layers) and stratum corneum (1 or 2 cell layers) 2. Many microfilaments and secretory mucous granules developed" during cornification of the keratinocytes in the amphibian epidermis without keratohyalin granules developing in the mammalian epidermis. 3. The keratinocytes of the amphibian epidermis were mostly connected with desmosomes. Hemidesmosomes were found between the basal lamina and the basal face of the stratum germinativum and composite desmosomes between the upper face of the stratum granulosum and the basal face of the stratum corneum. The, surface keratinized cells were connected with zonula occludens in the upper portion and with modified desmosomal elements in the lower portion, 4. The keratinocytes of the amphibian epidermis were different in ultrastructure at each stratum. a. In the stratum germinativum, the keratinocytes were columnar or cuboidal in form. Many mitochondria, microfilaments and ribosomes were found in the cytoplasm. b. In the stratum spinosum, the keratinocytes were cuboidal or polygonal in form, Many microfilaments and ribosomes were found and a few granular and agranular endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex developed in the cytoplasm. c. In the stratum granulosum, the keratinocytes were squamous in form and the intercellular spaces well developed. Many microfilaments, ribosomes, secretory mucous granules and pigment granules were found in the cytoplasm. d. In the stratum corneum, the keratinocytes were squamous in form and were filled with microfilaments. A few vacuoles and remnants of cell organelles were seen in the cytoplasm.

This essay discusses the cultural significance of Protestantism for the modern world. Central to this discussion is Max Weber's "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism". For Weber religion is one of his most important and central themes. It can indeed be asserted that his sociology of religion creates a paradigm. In terms of actual history religion has to a large extent died out in the modern world. If, in spite of this, Weber made it an important and central object of study, then the following question can be asked: was Weber trying to flee into the past by doing this? No. His studies of religion refer specifically to the present, in fact to the modern world. In other words: they investigate the cultural significance of religion for our time. Central to Max Weber's studies in the field of the sociology of religion is Protestantism, and specifically Calvinism. His famous investigations in the field of the cultural history, The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism analyse the development of the modern western bourgeoisie and its social action and lifestyle. According to Weber this is the very spirit of Capitalism, which was conditioned and determined by Capitalism and Protestantism, and especially by Calvinism. It is very remarkable that the stress in the studies, concerning the relationship of Capitalism and Protestantism on the one hand and the spirit of Capitalism on the other hand, is not on Capitalism but rather on Protestantism. Perhaps this can be considered something new in intellectual history. From the methodological point of view Weber refers to understanding and explanation, or rather: explanation through understanding. From "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism" as his starting point Weber compares various world religions, such as Confucianism, Taoism, Hinduism and Buddhism as well as Islam. And furthermore the rational social action and the rational lifestyle of the modern western bourgeoisie create a conceptual basis for further theoretical as well as historical investigations. According to Weber religion has lost its significance and function for human culture and society in the disenchanted contemporary world. Max Weber's sociology of religion is certainly a model for modern sociology of religion specifically and for sociology in general.

국내에서 유행하는 HIV의 전파 경로에 따른 Subtype 분포

Background : Previous data have been reported that subtype B is prevalent in South Korea, but neither the extent nor the proportion of subtypes could be evaluated. This study was designed to analyze the distribution of HIV-1 subtypes, temporal instructions and transmission dynamics between epidemiological groups. Methods : 1,280 Koreans had been diagnosed as HIV seropositive during the period 1985 to 2000. Among them, 134 individuals were selected for this molecular epidemiological study. 134 DNAs were isolated from uncultured or cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells. V3-V5 (0.7 kb) fragment of HIV-1 env gene was amplified by nested polymerase chain reaction and was sequenced. Results : HIV-1 isolates from thirty-seven homosexuals were all subtype B (100%). On the other hand, 66 isolates from 94 heterosexuals were subtype B (70%) and 28 were non B subtypes (30% : 13 A, 4 C, 2 D, 8 E , 1 G). Only subtype B strains were isolated from 73 males who were infected with HIV inside Korea while 16 B and 20 non B subtype strains were isolated from 36 males who were HIV infected outside of Korea. However, B and non B strains were isolated half and half from females who were infected inside Korea except one. Conclusion : The HIV-1 subtype B strains are prevalent in Korea from the early HIV infection until present in both homo and heterosexuals. Non B strains have been transmitted from men who were infected outside Korea to their spouses and casual partners. So, we need further study to monitor subtype B and non B HIV transmission in epidemiological groups of Korea, (Korean J Infect Dis 33:311∼318, 2001)

Vector Channel Simulator Design for Underwater Acoustic-based Communications

This paper discusses the development of an acoustic vector channel simulator for the performance analysis of an acoustic digital communication system. The channel simulator consists of transmission module, acoustic channel model, receiver, beamformer, and adaptive equalizer. The source signal (QPSK) is generated by the specified parameters. The transmitted signal generates multipath signals which have a different delay, amplitude and doppler frequency. The paper presents in details the approach to the performance analysis of an acoustic digital communication system according to the antenna structure and the various baseband signal processing techniques.

The Characteristics of Laser-Induced CVD SiON Thin Films

The SiON films were photo-chemically deposited by ArF(wave length: 193nm) excimer laser CVD used to excite and dissociate gas phases Si₂H_6, N₂O, and NH₃ molecules. We obtained various deposition characteristics when was varied the process parameters, such as substrate temperature, chamber pressure, and gas flow ratio. Deposited films were characterized by I-V, C-V, and TDDB. The results show the films have low leakage currents and good life time. We also analyzed the composition of the SiON films which have homogeneous composition throughout the film

Multiple lymphomatous polyposis (MLP) is a rare and unique clinical entity that manifest as multiple polyps occurring throughout the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike MALT-type lymphoma, MLP has a high tendency for extra-intestinsl spread and short mean survival time, The malignant cells of MLP share morphological, immunohistologic and cytogenetic similarity with cells of nodal-based mantle cell lympboma. We report a case of MLP that is presented with multiple polyposis affecting stomach, duodenum, small intestine and colon/rectum.

This paper examines Caryl Churchill`s feminist politics manifested in her 1985 play, A Mouthful of Birds. In this work, Churchill demonstrates a strong postmodern impulse not only in her revision of historical materials like The Bacchae and the biography of Herculine Barbin but also in her practice of Irigarayan mimicry. Churchill`s theater in the 1980s has consistently shown the political significance of decentering unitary notions of identities like gender, race, and sexuality. In this regard, one particular theoretical strand in poststructuralist feminist discourse, Judith Butler`s performativity, which has recently enjoyed wide currency in performance studies, proves useful in discussing Churchill`s feminist politics. Churchill`s major plays, including Cloud Nine and Top Girls, represent gender identities as performative, as effects of the compulsory repetition of gender norms, thus deconstructing their ontological claim to essence and truth. In A Mouthful of Birds, Churchill takes this deconstructive stance one step further as she seeks to proffer possibilities for rerouting the disciplinary performative structure to a liberating performance of desires that have been excluded and rendered invisible in the existing power structure. Collaborating with Lan, an anthropologist, Churchill achieves in this play a unique combination of Butler`s regulatory performativity and the transgressive performance conceptualized by Richard Schechner and Victor Turner, and suggests that the regulatory regime can be effectively resisted by performances of a variety of hidden desires that are released during possessions by spirits. Characters` possession performances mimic the performative structure, but they effect changes in the social structure as well as individual identities. Thus, Churchill`s writing presents itself as a feminist performance that repeats the socio-historical context in order to re-formulate it.
