        In order to establish a dyeing method with Magnoliaceae tree species dyeing was examined with 4 different parts, leaf, stem bark, root, flower of 4 Magnohaceae species, Magnolia kobus Dc., Magnolia denudata Desr, Magnolia obovata Thunb, Liriodendron tulipifera L Mordants used were chemicals, AIK(SO_4)_2 24H_2O, Ca(OH)_2, FeSO_4 7H_2O. All four species showed similar coloring among four different parts. Leaves and petals showed dark yellow, stem bark, grayish yellow, root bark, dark red or yellow. Al mordant made more brighter colour than Fe mordant. Stem bark showed less difference in color by mordants, whereas petals did the biggest.

        전통음식에 대한 경북지역 주부들의 의식 및 실태조사

        The purpose of this study was to survey the awareness and use for traditional foods of housewives in Kyong-buk area. The results were as follows : Residental areas were city(43.9%) and the county(56.1%). Region were divided as the north resources circle(28.3%), the east coast circle (21.0%), the middle west circle (21.7%), and the south city circle (29.0%). The performance degree of times and seasons of the year customs was Seolnal, Chuseuk, Daeboreum and Dongji in order. Preparation foods of Seolnal were deukguk, vegetablejeon, fishjeon, namul and gangjeung in order. Preparation foods of Chaseuk were songpeon, vegetablejeon, namul, fishjeon and fruits in order. The country foods were sikhae, muk, pumpkin, golbangiguk, yakga and potato in order.

        재래종 돼지고기에 대한 인식 및 실태

        The purpose of this study was to survey the recognition and the actual state of use of Native pork. The recognition on Native pork were examined using a questionary to eight hundred males and females in Kyeongbuk and Daegu. The results were as follows : The meats which they often ate in the order of pork, beef and chicken. When people eat out, 43.7% of those ate pork and 42.7% of those ate beef, the younger people liked pork more than the older people. The recognition on pork dishes showed the a high mean value of 3.38 to "I like pork dishes" . 53.5% of the respondants liked three-ply flesh and 33.6% of those liked rib among the part of pork. The favorite pork dish was pork roast meat at 48.1%, Kimchichige at 13.6%, and sweet and sour pork 10.9%. Suitable and garnish food with pork were lettuce, sesame leaf and garlic, and alcoholic drinks such as soju. The Native pork showed a higher mean value than improved pork in taste(lightness, tasty), sticky meat quality, low fat content and good food for health. 30.9% of the respondants recognized as a traditional food. 59.1% of respondants have used the native pork, ingest place came out special eating house 42.2%, 38.3% of respondants suggested 'convenience of purchase' and 31.6% of those suggested 'low price' as facts that has been improved in the native pork.

        기억력 저하를 호소하는 노인들을 대상으로 INM176를 3개월간 임상시험한 후의 치료성적 및 부작용 평가 보고

        Objectives : We examined the effects of INM 176 (K-l107) compared with placebo on the cognitive functions of 92 old aged subjects with cognitive impairment. Methods : This was a prospective, 12 week, double-blind, Placebo-controlled clinical trial. The elderly who achieved a score of less than 25 points on the K-MMSE or showed a high risk of Alzheimer's disease from the 7-Minute Neurocognitive Screening Battery were considered to have objective impairment and were selected as subjects for this study. The subjects were randomized to placebo or INM 176 group. The outcome measures were from the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-Cog), the Instrumental Activities ofDaily Living (IADL) and the Korean Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS) and two kinds of computerized priming tests. After setting the total error score in the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive section (ADAS-cog) as the repeated measurement factor, an analysis of variance of the combined factor design was done between the placebo and INM 176 group. Results : The interaction effect of time (pre- and post-trial) and group (placebo and INM 176 group) was significant in the analysis of the ADAS-cog's total error score. The INM 176 group's total error score in the ADAS-cog decreased significantly (p<0.01), whereas the placebo group showed a slight increase. The mean changes in IADL and GDS from baseline scores favored in the INM 176 group than in the placebo group. Outcome changes ofADAS-cog, IADL, KGDS scores during the 12 week clinical trail ofINM 176 and placebo demonstrated favorable responses in the INM176 administered group. Conclusions : This is a preliminary clinical trial result of INM176 as a memory pill. Based on these results, INM176 may be a candidate molecule for the improvement of cognitive functions, including memory, Further clinical trial should demonstrate its efficacy.

      • Decreased Hardness of Several Grains by Enzyme Treatment

        Grains are nutritious foods that richly contain fiber, vitamins and minerals but it would be difficult to chew for some elderly people with weakened chewing ability. This study was aimed to find the appropriate conditions for reducing hardness of grains by enzyme treatment. To select appropriate enzyme, each grain (white rice, brown rice, barely, sorghum, and job’s tears) was soaked for one hour in enzyme solution at optimum activation temperature. Grains were soaked for one hour in selected enzyme solution at different concentration (0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7%) under warming condition of cooker at 70℃, steamed in electric rice pressure cooker, rapidly cooled at -18℃ for one hour, placed at 20℃ for another hour, and then hardness was measured by texture analyzer. The initial hardness of white rice, brown rice, barely, sorghum, and job’s tears were 6.5 × 104, 7.1 × 104, 7.0 × 104, 7.8 × 104 and 7.7 × 104 N/m 2 , respectively. The lowest hardness of grains, 4.0 × 104, 5.0 × 104, 4.6 × 104, 5.7 × 104 and 4.7 × 104 N/m 2 were obtained with 0.3% of enzyme D solution while the hardness was not changed significantly with higher concentration. These results suggest that some hard grains treated with enzyme would become softer than white rice, and thus these grains may be used to prepare a healthier meal for elderly people having mastication problem.

        Epiphrenic diverticulum(traction type) is such a rare disease. The case of this disease which is due to mediastinal tumor, not because of inflammatory adhesion or of motor disorder is especially hard to find. The patient was a 50-year-old male and admitted with the intermittent postprandial chest discomfort. The chest CT and esophagography showed epiphrenic diverticulum(traction type). The tumor was located at the left anterolateral of thoracic spine, adhered to the right wall of esophagus. We performed the diverticulectomy and extirpation of mediastinal tumor under left posterolateral thoracotomy. The tumor and the esophagus were well seperated without invasion to the esophagus. In the pathology of resected tissues, solitary neurofibroma was diagnosed. There was no complication or recurrence after surgical resection.(Korean J Med 59:225-229, 2000)

        Urogastrone이 Insulin 투여로 인한 흰쥐의 위점막손상에 미치는 영향

        N/A As has been known, urogastrone inhibits gastric acid secretion and stimulates epithelial cell proliferation so that it can accelerate the healing of chronic gastric and duodenal ulcers, and prevent the formation of gastric and duodenal ulcers. In order to investigate the effect of urogastrone on insulin-induced gastric mucosal injuries, as well as the mechanism of the protective effect, the present study was carried out with Sprague-Dawley rats by using urogastrone, which is isolated from human urine. The following results were obtained. 1) Gastric mucosal injuries were observed only in the oxyntic mucosal area of the rats, which were sacrificed five hours after a subcutaneous injection of insulin(5U/㎏). 2) Insulin-induced gastric mucosal injuries were prevented by administering urogastrone, intraperi toneally and intragastrically in doses above 200㎍/㎏ at a schedule of two hours before and 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 hours after insulin injection. 3) The basal and insulin-induced gastric acid secretion of the rats with an acute gastric fistula was not inhibited at doses of 200㎍/㎏(×6) urogastrone, which was administered intraperitoneally and intragastrically. 4) The level of DNA synthesis did not increase in the gastric oxyntic mucosa for seven hours after the start of urogastrone administration at doses of 200㎍/㎏(×6). However, significant stimulated DNA synthesis was found when the urogastrone wasintraperitoneally administered at eight-hour intervals for three days. In conclusion, these results showed that intraperitoneal and intragastric administration of urogastrone provided a cytoprotective effect on the gastric mucosa against insulin-induced injury in rats. This protective effect of urogastrone administration was not mediated by its-gastric acid inhibitory action, but might be attributed to the early effect of gastric mucosal proliferation.

        Commiphora molmo (Myrrh) contains various biological activities. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms in cells remain unknown. The purpose of this study was to confirm the efficacy of inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) production induced by lipopolysaccharides (LPS) on J774 macrophage cells of myrrh, and additionally regulatory effects of perform wound healing. Further, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription3 (p-STAT3) and Janus kinase 2 (p-JAK2) levels in macrophage cells were regulated in the presence of myrrh extract. Based on the above results, myrrh is thought to provide basic data on anti-inflammatory properties through interleukin 6 (IL-6) inhibitory activity and regulatory effects of cell migration.

        CdS-sensitized 1-D single-crystalline anatase TiO<sub>2</sub> nanowire arrays for photoelectrochemical hydrogen production

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of single crystalline anatase TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanowire (NW) arrays which are sensitized with CdS for visible light activity. Photocurrent varies largely with increasing the growth time (from 2 to 24 h) of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NWs and also increasing the deposition cycles (from 7 to 13 cycles) of CdS, which are attributed to changes in morphology of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NWs and CdS layer. TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NW array grown for 3 h with 9-cycles of CdS deposition exhibits the maximum photocurrent of 3.6 mA/cm<SUP>2</SUP> at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under the 1 SUN solar light. Morphological analysis combined with photoresponse analysis show that the 3 h-grown TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NW array has the most suitable structure for PEC electrode because of large surface area for light absorption and chemical reaction, and that the 9-cycles deposited CdS layer provides the optimum light absorption and electron lifetime.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The PEC properties of 1-D anatase TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NW/CdS electrodes are reported firstly. </LI> <LI> The effects of NW morphology and CdS cycles on properties of PEC were investigated. </LI> <LI> The 3 h growth NW shows vertically well-alignments and no canopy phase. </LI> <LI> The 9 CdS cycles has optimum condition for the charge generation and recombination. </LI> <LI> The 3 h growth NW with 9 CdS SILAR cycles shows the best performance. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Analysis of reasons for extracting permanent teeth among Korean adults with oral diseases

        This study aimed to analyze the main reasons for the extraction of permanent teeth among Koreans with oral diseases. The electronic medical record data for past 10 years was used in a target population comprising of 26,795 adults diagnosed with oral disease and scheduled to undergo permanent tooth extraction. The oral diseases were classified into periodontal disease, dental caries, impacted teeth, prosthodontic treatment, orthodontic treatment, tooth fracture, trauma, and others. The relationship between these diseases and permanent tooth extraction was analyzed. Permanent teeth were extracted due to periodontal disease (34.5%), dental caries (26.6%), and tooth impactions (22.3%). Permanent teeth were extracted as the cause of dental caries (28.6%) and periodontal disease (45.9%) from patients in 26-35 and 46-55 years of age respectively. The mandibular first molars (17.2%), mandibular second molars (16.0%), maxillary first molars (14.7%), and maxillary second molars (14.3%) were extracted due to dental caries. The incidence of periodontal disease was highest in the mandibular central incisor (72.6%; p<0.05). These findings indicated that periodontal disease was the chief cause of extraction of permanent teeth among Korean adults.
