In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.
No-till Farming System: Research Direction and Outlook in Korea

No-till farming system has been extensively studied all over the world as the effective method for maintaining the soil fertility. The general advantages of this system have been well known for reducing the labor, fuel, machinery, and irrigation cost as well as for increasing the soil quality through soil aggregation, water infiltration, microbial population and etc. Recently, it becomes more popular with the increase of interest on sustainable agriculture, especially because of its higher carbon sequestration potential compared to conventional tillage. Crop residue management should be essentially included to look forward to achieving the positive effect on reduction of greenhouse gas. Nonetheless, there are also negative opinions on effect of no-till farming system. For example, some researchers reported that soil physical properties were not improved by no-till under certain soil and climatic conditions. This means no-till farming systems were strongly affected by the soil characters and climatic conditions. Therefore, the researches to meet the specific-regional characters are greatly needed in order for no-till farming system to successfully settle in Korea. The objective of the review article is to present the future direction and perspective on no-till farming system in Korea. For this purpose, we summarized the results of domestic and foreign researches about no-till farming system until now. Specifically, the chapter on foreign research consisted of four parts: positive and negative effects, the effect in paddy soil, and latest research direction (2012-2013) of no-till farming systems. Whereas, review for domestic researches was divided into two main parts: paddy and upland soils. In the final chapter, the priorities for the optimum conservation tillage in Korea were discussed and proposed through the previous researches.

The interspecific estimation for tolerance capacities of upland crop species to excessive soil water stress in paddy field is significant in agricultural practices. Most of upland crops can be damaged by either excessive soil water or capillary rise of the water table during rainy season in paddy fields. The major objective of this study was to evaluate water stress of upland crops under different drainage classes in converted paddy field. This experiment was carried out in poorly drained soil (PDS) and imperfectly drained soil (IDS) of alluvial sloping area located at Toero-ri, Bubuk-myeon, Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. The soil was Gagog series, which was a member of the fine silty, mixed, nonacid, mesic family of Aeric Endoaquepts (Low Humic-Gley soils). Two drainage methods, namely under Open ditch drainage methods (ODM) and, Closed pipe drainage methods (PDM) were installed within 1-m position at the lower edge of the upper paddy fields. The results showed that sum of excess water days (SWD30), which was used to represent the moisture stress index, was 42 days (the lowest) in the PDM compared with 110 days in the ODM. Most of upland crops were more susceptible to excessive soil water during panicle initial stage on more PDS than on IDS. Yield of upland crops in the PDM was continuously increased by the rate of 15.1% on sorghum, 15.4% foxtail millet, 53.6% proso millet, 49.6% soybean and 47.9% adzuki bean as compared in the ODM. The capacity for tolerance by excessive soil water based on yield of each upland crop in the poorly drained sloping paddy fields was the order of sorghum, soybean, foxtail millet, proso millet and adzuki bean. Therefore, Sorghum is relatively tolerant to excessive soil water conditions and, may be grown successfully in converted paddy field.

Obesity is a primary factor provoking various chronic disorders, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes,and cancer, and causes the death of 2.8 million individuals each year. Diet, physical activity,medications, and surgery are the main therapies for overweightness and obesity. During weight losstherapy, a decrease in energy stores activates appetite signaling pathways under the regulation ofneuropeptides, including anorexigenic [corticotropin-releasing hormone, proopiomelanocortin (POMC),cholecystokinin (CCK), and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript] and orexigenic [agoutirelatedprotein (AgRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and melanin-concentrating hormone] neuropeptides,which increase food intake and lead to failure in attaining weight loss goals. Ginseng and ginsenosidesreverse these signaling pathways by suppressing orexigenic neuropeptides (NPY and AgRP) and provokinganorexigenic neuropeptides (CCK and POMC), which prevent the increase in food intake. Moreover,the results of network pharmacology analysis have revealed that constituents of ginseng radix,including campesterol, beta-elemene, ginsenoside Rb1, biotin, and pantothenic acid, are highly correlatedwith neuropeptide genes that regulate energy balance and food intake, including ADIPOQ, NAMPT, UBL5,NUCB2, LEP, CCK, GAST, IGF1, RLN1, PENK, PDYN, and POMC. Based on previous studies and networkpharmacology analysis data, ginseng and its compounds may be a potent source for obesity treatment byregulating neuropeptides associated with appetite.

<P>The aim of this prospective analysis was to objectify and quantify the sensory loss in the auricular area that occurs following surgery for chronic otitis media or cholesteatoma, and to assess the exact recovery time of the auricular sensation. Till now, no study has yet been conducted on the sensory loss that is developed after retroauricular incision is performed for chronic ear surgery. Forty-eight patients underwent surgery via retroauricular incision for chronic otitis media or for chronic otitis media or cholesteatoma between March 2009 and January 2010. The skin around the auricle was divided into six areas. The sensation of each area was assessed before the surgery and 3 days, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after the surgery, using the Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments. The patients were also asked to record the sensation that they felt using the visual analog scale (VAS). In the objective sensory assessment, only area 5, which corresponds to the retroauricular area, showed significant sensory loss. Three months after the surgery, the sensation was recovered to a level comparable to that before the surgery in most of the patients. The mean subjective VAS score was 10 prior to the surgery, 8.56 ( 1.08) 3 months after the surgery, and 9.32 ( 0.74) 6 months after the surgery, respectively. In conclusion, following chronic ear surgery, the sensation of the auricle was recovered to the previous level within 3 months. Therefore, patients who are to undergo retroauricular incision should be informed that they will experience temporary sensory loss for approximately 3 months after the surgery.</P>
