        Objective : This study was conducted to prepare the fundamental data on heavy metal concentration in hair permanents agents and to prevent the health impairment due to heavy metal. Methods and Material : The author determined of 5 heavy metals(Pb, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Cu) concentration hair permanent agents in the market with flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results : The results were as follows: 1. The geometic mean concentrations of total subjects were 0.04㎍/g for Pb, 0.09㎍/g for Cr, 0.06㎍/g for Mn, 0.03㎍/g for Ni, and 0.04㎍/g for Cu. 2. The most highest mean concentrations of heavy metals in hair permanent agents by using type were Cr for wave agent and straight cream agent, Cu for setting iron agent, Cr and Cu for coating perm agent. 3. Metal most hlghest mean concentrations of heavy in hair permanent agents by type of color was green for Cu. 4. The mean concentration of Cu among 5 heavy metals in hair permanent agents by marker was most highest. 5. There was most statistically significant difference on mean concentration in hair permanent agents between domestic and foreign products. 6. The exposure amount of heavy metal concentration by one time using the permanent agent were 4.O㎍ for Pb, 9.O㎍ for Cr, 6.0㎍ for Mn, 3.O㎍ for Ni and 4.0㎍ for Cu. Conclusion : As above results author suggest to prepare the preventive program of health impairment due to heavy metal by long term chronic exposure to who were using the hair permanent agents hair designer and customers.

      • 운동 강도의 차이가 흰쥐의 혈액 성분과 적혈구의 형태에 미치는 영향

        This study was to investigate the effects on hematological indices and heinz body formation in various intensity, Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into the control group, the low-intensity exercise group, nigh-intensity exercise group (n=7 in each group). Animals of the low-intensity exercise groups were put on exercise 30 min per 1 day, 5 days per week for 6-weeks. Animals of the high-intensity exercise groups were put on exercise 120 min per 1 day, 5 days per week for 6-weeks. Red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (Hgb), hematocrit (Hct), mean ceil volume (MCV), mean hemoglobin corpuscular (MCH), mean hemoglobin corpuscular concentration (MCHC) were analyzed in automated hematology analyzer (ABX Hematology MICROS 60) from 10㎕ of whole blood. Erythrocyte morphology were evaluated in super vital (Brilliant cresyl blue stain) stained blood films. In the present results, Hg, MCHC in the high-intensity exercise group was significantly decreased compared with the different exercise intensity and the control group. MCV in the high-intensity exercise group was significantly increased compared with the different exercise intensity end the control group. Heinz body formation in the high-intensity exercise group was significantly increased compared with the different exercise intensity and the control group. In the present study, it can be suggested that intensity of exercise can influence hematological variables and heinz body formation. These findings suggest that high intensity exercise induces oxidative damage to erythrocyte.

        항생제 다제내성균 Staphylococcus aureus SA2로부터 분리한 테트라사이클린 내성 플라스미드 pKH6의 염기서열

        한국에서 임산균주로부터 분리한 테트라사이클린(Tc) 내성 플라스미드 pKH6의 전체 염기서열을 결정하여 가장 대표적인 Tc 내성 플라스미드인 pT181과 비교하였다. pKH6의 전체 길이는 4439bp로 pT181과 동일하게 나타났으며 염기서열은 7개의 염기에서 차이를 보였다. 전부 다 염기쌍이 치환된 형태로 나타났으며 그 중 3개는 coding 부위에서 일어났다. coding 부위에서 일어난 경우에도 1개는 동일한 아미노산을 coding 하였기 때문에 pT181과 차이가 없었으며 RepC와 Pre 단백질에 있어 각각 1개의 아미노산에서 차이를 나타내었다. The complete nucleotide sequence of pKH6, a tetracycline-resistance (Tc^r) plasmid isolated from multi-drug resistant Staphlococcus aureus SA2, has been determined and compared with that of the staphylococcal Tc^r plasmid pT181. The nucleotide sequences of the two plasmids are in agreement except for 7 nucleotides. All differences are caused by base pair substitutions. Among 6 substitutions, 3 occurred in coding regions. However, only tow base substitutions in coding regions resulted in changes of amino acid sequences in two different ORFs of repC and Pre proteins.

        국산 DAF 펌프의 기포특성

        The paper introduces a domestic pump designed for dissolved air flotation (DAF). In the paper, the difference in performance between the domestic DAF pump and conventional pressure saturator is explained using the characteristics of air bubble released. The size distribution of air bubbles released from DAF pump is measured by image analyzer and particle size analyzer. And the mean diameter of bubbles is 43μm. The results are similar to that of pressure saturator. The air volume concentration in the water of domestic DAF pump and pressure saturator are 40 and 70% of theoretical amounts. In DAF system used domestic DAF pump, the removal efficiency of turbidity is 70%.

        METRx™ 기구를 이용한 후방 경추부 추궁추간공 제거술의 예비 결과

        Objectives: Posterior cervical microscopic laminoforaminotomy has been a preferred procedure for a posterolateral cervical disc or foraminal stenosis. However, neckpain from wide skin incision and muscle injury are some of disadvantages. The authors performed cervical microscopic laminoforaminotomy with METRx™ tubular dilator system and were compared the results with classical cervical microscopic foraminotomy. Methods: Six patients underwent posterior cervical microscopic laminoforaminotomy using the METRx™ during 6 months. We have selected 10 patients from our institution as a comparison group. Preoperative and postoperative pain score composed of the radicular and neck component was examined and disability score also recorded. Diameters and lengths of laminoforaminotomy on the postoperative CT also were compared with two methods Results: Postoperative pain scores to the radiculopathies were not different but postoperative pain scores to the neckpain on the follow up periods were significantly different. The average vertical and transverse diameters of the laminoforaminotomy defect on the postoperative CT scans were not different between two groups. Average hospital stay of the classical methods was 8.8±7.5 days comparison with 4.5±0.54days of new procedure. Conclusions: Posterior cervical microscopic laminoforaminotomy with METRx™ systems seems to provide similar decompression and clinical results as classical methods compared to classical methods and shows superior results for postoperative neckpain and hospital stays.

      • 표준 용매 벤젠의 Rayleigh 비의 온도 의존성

        The Rayleigh ratio of benzene is a very important physical constant with which the integrated scattered intensity of laser light scattering can be converted into the absolute value. In this study temperature dependence of Rayleigh ratio of this solvent has been investigated with two different methods in the temperature range of 25-75℃. It was found that in the direct measurement the non-linear behavior of its Rayleigh ratio were observed as increasing temperature even if the scattering volume correction was applied to the scattered intensity of benzene. However the result of indirect measurement based upon the invariance of molecular weight of standard polystyrene polymer for any polymer solution temperature showed us that its temperature dependence up to 75℃ could be expressed with the Benoit's linear equation rather than the non-linear one. It seems that the scattered intensity in direct method has more complicate contributions at the elevated temperature. Further research works are necessary in order to solve such discrepancy clearly.

      • Effect of Absolute From <i>Hibiscus syriacus</i> L. Flower on Wound Healing in Keratinocytes

        <P><B>Background:</B></P><P>Proliferation and migration of keratinocytes are essential for the repair of cutaneous wounds. <I>Hibiscus syriacus</I> L. has been used in Asian medicine; however, research on keratinocytes is inadequate.</P><P><B>Objective:</B></P><P>To establish the dermatological properties of absolute from <I>Hibiscus syriacus</I> L. flower (HSF) and to provide fundamental research for alternative medicine.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods:</B></P><P>We identified the composition of HSF absolute using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. We also examined the effect of HSF absolute in HaCaT cells using the XTT assay, Boyden chamber assay, sprout-out growth assay, and western blotting. We conducted an <I>in-vivo</I> wound healing assay in rat tail-skin.</P><P><B>Results:</B></P><P>Ten major active compounds were identified from HSF absolute. As determined by the XTT assay, Boyden chamber assay, and sprout-out growth assay results, HSF absolute exhibited similar effects as that of epidermal growth factor on the proliferation and migration patterns of keratinocytes (HaCaT cells), which were significantly increased after HSF absolute treatment. The expression levels of the phosphorylated signaling proteins relevant to proliferation, including extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk 1/2) and Akt, were also determined by western blot analysis.</P><P><B>Conclusion:</B></P><P>These results of our <I>in-vitro</I> and ex-vivo studies indicate that HSF absolute induced cell growth and migration of HaCaT cells by phosphorylating both Erk 1/2 and Akt. Moreover, we confirmed the wound-healing effect of HSF on injury of the rat tail-skin.         Background/Aims: The signal transducer and activator of the transcription (Stat)-family of proteins are cytoplasmic transcription factors that transmit signals from cytokines and growth-factor receptors to the nucleus. Stat proteins, especially Stat3 and Stat5, are constitutively activated in various solid tumors and hematological malignancies. However, the role of Stat3 signaling in gastric carcinoma has not yet been fully determined. This study was conducted to investigate the climical value of STAT3 and STAT5 expression in gastric carcinoma. Methods: Expression of STAT3 and STAT5 was extimated by 100 resected gastric cancer cases. We evaluated the relationships between expressions of STAT3 or STAT5 and various clinicopathological factors, including stage and, overall survival. Results: Compared with normal gastric epithelial cell line, elevated activities of STAT3 and STAT5 were found in human gastric cancer cell lines. The expressive intensity of phospho-Stat3 protein was significantly increased in patients with higher TNM stage. Furthermore, the expressive intensity of phospho-Stat3 was correlated with poor survival rate. However, there was no correlation between Stat5 and clinicopathological paramenters. Conclusions: These results suggest that STAT3 may play an important role in the tumorigenesis of gastric adenocarcinoma, and it`s expression in tissue is good indicator for poor prognosis of gastric cancer. STAT3 deserves further investigation for treatment of gastric cancer.

      • Skin regeneration effect and chemical composition of essential oil from Artemisia Montana.

        <P>Artemisia montana Pampan (Compositae) (AMP) contains various compounds, including phenolic acids, alkaloids, and essential oil. It has been widely used in oriental medicine due to a variety of biological effects. However, the biological activity of the essential oil from AMP (AMPEO) on skin has not been investigated. In the present study, AMPEO was evaluated for its composition and its effect on cellular events (migration and proliferation) related to skin regeneration using normal human keratinocytes (HaCats). AMPEO, which was extracted by steam distillation, contained 42 components. AMPEO increased proliferation in HaCats in a dose-dependent manner (EC 50, 8.5 ng/mL) and did not affect migration. AMPEO also enhanced the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK 1/2 and induced the synthesis of type IV collagen, but not type I collagen in HaCats. In addition, AMPEO promoted wound closure in the dorsal side skin of rat tail. These results demonstrated that AMPEO extracted by steam distillation induced proliferation and synthesis of type IV collagen in human skin keratinocytes, and may thereby exert positive effects on skin regeneration and wound healing in human skin.</P>
