Strength-Based and Wave-Based Liquefaction Characterization
Cho, Gye Chun,Lee, Jong Sub Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2006 Key Engineering Materials Vol.321 No.-

The purposes of this study are to analyze post liquefaction shear strength and to explore the potential use of wave-based techniques to monitor liquefaction and post liquefaction response. The first part presents a detailed analysis of triaxial test results to identify robust strength criteria. The second part documents experimental data on the characterization of liquefaction events with P-wave reflection imaging and S-wave trans-illumination techniques. The relevance of multiple coexisting temporal and spatial scales is highlighted. The following results are obtained: 1) the post liquefaction shear strength can be estimated within the framework of critical state soil mechanic; 2) the P-wave reflection images obtained before and after liquefaction represent the depression of the soil-water interface; 3) excess pore pressure migration from liquefied deep layers may cause zero-effective stress in dilative shallow layers. P-wave reflection is a valuable tool to monitor the evolution of subsurface structures and S-wave trans-illumination technique can be used to yield a comprehensive picture of the spatial evolution of liquefaction.

In recent years, the friction coefficient decline in the joints of steel structures caused by corrosion has drawn public attention. Therefore, this study investigated the friction coefficient and surface roughness of high tension bolt joints using a Zn/Al metal spraying corrosion resistance method to estimate the application possibility of the Zn/Al metal spraying corrosion resistance method on the joints of steel structures. According to results, the friction coefficient of Zn/Al metal spraying was 0.50 or more. In addition, the friction coefficient increased according to the decrease in surface roughness (Sm/Rz). Therefore, the Zn/Al metal spraying is applicable to a corrosion resistance method for high tension bolt joints.

Microstructure and Texture Evolution during Large Strain Hot Rolling of AZ31 Mg Alloy
Lee, Jae Seol,Son, Hyeon Taek,Oh, Ik Hyun,Cho, Jae Ik,Kang, Chang Seog,Bae, Jung Chan Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2007 Materials science forum Vol.539 No.-

The aims of this study ares to investigate the microstructure evolution of AZ31 Mg alloys with normal rolling and cross rolling during the large strain hot rolling affects microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of AZ31 Mg alloy. In the microstructures of as-rolled both samples, twins are clearly apparent, small and recrystallized grains are visible along some grain boundary and twinned regions. The lankford values of large strain cross rolled sample obviously demostrate the higher average r-value and lower planar anisotropy value. The press formaility of large strain rolled Mg alloy might be improved due to control of texture and grain size by change of the rolling direction.

The research of stress distributions and the structural deformation at the sliding core in artificial intervertebral disc under the dorsiflexion is becoming more significant. This research analyzes the finite element model of sliding core and evaluates the effect of radius of curvature and the friction coefficient at the sliding core on von-Mises stress and the contact pressure. New Models of the artificial intervertebral disc are suggested by the results of the sliding core is evaluated by the comparison of that of SB Charité III. Based on the above facts, the optimized radius curvature of the sliding core is also suggested.

Mechanical Property and Oxidation Behavior of LPS-SiC Materials
Lee, Sang Ll,Shin, Yun Seok,Lee, Jin Kyung,Lee, Jong Baek,Park, Jun Young Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2006 Key Engineering Materials Vol.321 No.-

The microstructure and the mechanical property of liquid phase sintered (LPS) SiC materials with oxide secondary phases have been investigated. The strength variation of LPS-SiC materials exposed at the elevated temperatures has been also examined. LPS-SiC materials were sintered at the different temperatures using two types of Al2O3/Y2O3 compositional ratio. The characterization of LPS-SiC materials was investigated by means of SEM with EDS, three point bending test and indentation test. The LPS-SiC material with a density of about 3.2 Mg/m3 represented a flexural strength of about 800 MPa and a fracture toughness of about 9.0 MPa⋅√m.

Eco-friendly development and on-going research strategy of Rotation-Cylinder Method (RCM) is given for SiCp/AZ91 Mg composites, identifying some of the key factors that need to be controlled and indicating subsequent casting processes. RCM produces U-shaped laminar melt surface with a Rankine vortex even at high rotation speed in an ambient atmosphere, which allows quick and efficient incorporation and homogeneous distribution of SiC particulates into molten Mg alloys. Therefore, sound SiCp/AZ91 Mg composites can be manufactured in conjunction with subsequent casting processes, such as investment casting and thixocasting. A transmission electron microscopy study showed that the interfacial reaction products consist of Mg2Si, MgO, Mg17Al12 and Al6Mn, which were analyzed using primitive cell volume and zero order Laue zone pattern and single convergent beam electron diffraction pattern containing higher order Laue zone ring from a nanosized region.

Study on Fault Detection and Diagnosis of the Edge-Transmission Ball Mill System
Wang, Gao Ping,Hong, Yong,Hong, Dong Pyo,Yang, Sung Mo,Kim, Young Moon Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2007 Key Engineering Materials Vol.353-358 No.3

Pieces of large-scale equipment such as a ball mill system are subjected to heavy and alternate loads under the worst working conditions, which result in higher fault rates. However, since such equipment exerts important functions to the economy and industry, it isn’t recommendable to halt production in order to detect the defects under unconfirmed faults. We explore a reliable and practical fault diagnosis scheme for the ball mill system that is widely used in the building material industry. With utilizing the signal acquisition and process system of vibration, the field testing and analysis are performed based on the violent vibration of an edge-transmission Φ3×11m ball mill system. The primary diagnosis that is based on the configuration of the transmission system and foundation stiffness is found, and a feasible resolution scheme is obtained, so that the optimal and economic reform scheme is determined. The detailed scheme has been adopted by the production industry. This study that is based on the fault diagnosis of the edgetransmission ball mill system has a comprehensive significance of theory and reality. This provides a larger basis for vibration inspection and fault diagnosis in building material industries.

Creep Life Prediction of Waspaloy Using the Initial Strain Parameter Technique
Kim, Seon Jin,Kong, Yu Sik,Jung, Won Taek,Yeom, Jong Taek,Park, Nho Kwang Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2007 Key Engineering Materials Vol.353-358 No.3

The purpose of this study is to investigate the high temperature creep life of Waspaloy using the Initial Strain Parameter Technique (ISPT). The creep tests were performed at the elevated temperatures from 550oC to 700 oC. Constant stress creep tests were carried out in the experiment. The initial strain was measured for one minute after loading. The creep life of Waspaloy was calculated using the creep life prediction equation of ISPT. The confidence level between the experimental rupture time and the calculated rupture time using the ISPT is within 95%. So, the results show that the creep life prediction by the ISPT was a good agreement with LMP method.
