Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

The main role of muffler is to reduce the noise generated by explosion in an engine. Since the muffler is connected to the engine directly, the vibration generated by the explosion in an engine shakes the muffler. The vibration of muffler excites the floor panel where the hanger is connected. And the vibration of floor panel generates unwanted noises in a cabin. The design of muffler hangers should be done with care to reduce this kind of noises. This paper shows how to find the effect of muffler hangers to the interior noise in a car. This method shows whether the muffler hanger generates noise or not.

The vibration of exhaust system by the firing force of an engine determines the ride quality of a car and fatigue life of exhaust system. The problem of mechanical vibration of an exhaust system can be well solved by combined method of modal test and finite element method. In some cases, it is better to separate the whole structure into several substrucutres due to its size and shape. In this paper, we divide the exhaust system into two parts and get the vibration characteristics by the modal test. And the results are verified by the finite element analysis. The assemble of each verified sub-models gives the vibration characteristics of the whole exhaust system. The results are useful to predict the vibration behavior of the exhaust system in a car.

We study the methods to calculate the bound-to-continuum transition amplitudes in a biased GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well detector structure. First we apply the complex energy method to evaluate the energy levels of meta-stable states. We also present how the coefficients of the travelling waves change with the complex value of energy. Transition amplitudes to each continuous scattering states are also calculated. The transition peaks evaluated agree well with the energy levels of the meta-stable states found using the complex energy method.

In order to investigate the availability of insect resources for agrobiotechnological or medical purposes, we examined antioxidant (DPPH and FRAP assay) and cell viability by oxidant stress and NO inhibition assay by treatment of the extracts of Statilia maculata Thunberg, Tenodera angustipennis Saussure and Tenodera aridifolia Stoll. We found that Tenodera angustipennis Saussure and Tenodera aridifolia Stoll extract (DW, etanol, methanol) had high levels of anti-oxidant activity, whereas Tenodera aridifolia Stoll extract showed increased cell viability by hydrogen peroxide and inhibition of NO production. These findings suggest that Statilia maculata Thunberg, Tenodera angustipennis Saussure and Tenodera aridifolia Stoll, extract have potentials to be developed for agrobiotechnology or medicinal use, indicating that mechanistic study including inhibition against molecular inflammation will show a possibility for the development of useful insect resources.
남조류의 체외 대사부산물이 다른 조류의 광합성에 미치는 타감작용

The effect of cyanobacterial extracellular byproducts upon the aIgal photosynthesis was assessed to elucidate the allelopathic effect of algal blooms in eutrophic lake. Algal cultures were filtered with 0.2μm membrane filters to remove algal cells and sterilized. 0 to 30m1aliquots of filtrate were added to 25m1 culture suspensions of other algal species, and the (14)^C uptake rates wert measured. The filtrates of cyanobacterial cultures(Anabaena flos-aquae, Phormidium sp.) inhibited the photosynthesis of green algae(Selenastrum capricornutum and Scenedesmus brasiliensis), while the filtrate of Selenastrum capricornutum and Scenedesmuns brasiliensis did not inhibit Anabaena flos-aqiae. In the autoinhibition test Anabaena flos-aquae, Selenastrum capricornutum, and Scenedesmus brasiliensis showed positive, negative, and no effects, respectively.

The purposes of this study were to investigate the physicochemical characteristics and storage stabilities of various sauces with added Yuza(Citrus Junos). Yuza consisted of three parts: peeled (46.17%), fleshed (43.74%) and seeded (10.09%). Yuza juice revealed 11.33% extraction yield, pH 2.85, 4.18% total acidity, 11° Brix, 1.16% transmittance and 2.63° Brix/acid ratio. Five kinds of sauces with added Yuza juice were Yuza red pepper paste sauce, Yuza soybean sauce for meat, Shahu shabu Yuza sauce, Korean Yuza vegetable sauce and Japanese Yuza soybean sauce. These sauces showed slight changes in pH, total acidity, total bacterial counts and overall sensory characteristics during storage period (60 days). In conclusion, Yuza juice could be applied to various sauces, which remained usable for 60 days.

In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with memory loss and cognitive impairments. An AD transgenic (Tg) pig model would be useful for preclinical testing of therapeutic agents. In this study, we report the use of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) to produce transgenic pigs over-expressing the human AD related genes (APP, APPswedish, Presenilin 1, and Tau). Transgenic embryos were generated by SCNT of from ear fibroblasts expressing AD genes. A total of 1808 (average 258) SCNT embryos were transferred into 7 recipients. Pregnancy was successfully maintained in one recipient. We obtained 1 cloned male piglet from a surrogate gilts and the weight of piglet was 935 g. But, the male piglet died two days after birth. The piglet expressed AD related genes by PCR and western blot analysis. Transgenes were expressed in multiple tissues, and at especially high levels in brain. AD Tg pig might be very useful for studying the disease and for testing new therapeutics in preclinical studies of human AD.
