The level of urinary aflatoxin M1 in Korean adults

Competitive ELISA methods were used to measure the level of aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) from urine in 1008 Korean adults. Subjects were selected by random sampling in all areas of Korea, except Cheju-do. The recovery rate of AFM1 using this method was 105% (73-124%). The geometric mean of urinary AFM1 in all subjects was 3.43 pg/mL (3.67 ng/g creatinine). The level of AFM1 in males was statistically higher, compared with female subjects. However, the levels of AFM1 did not differ according to age. Subjects in Chungbuk-do showed the highest urinary AFM1 concentration, whereas subjects in Kyeongnam-do showed the lowest concentration. Assuming an excretion rate of 5%, this AFM1 excretion corresponds to approximately 0.1 microgram/day in Korean adults.

Objectives : This study investigated the compensatory neural correlate of selective attention deficit in schizophrenics Show-ing near-normal performance. Methods : A 'modified Stroop' was developed that can be used measure the response time during functional imaging. An event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging study was carried out in 10 clinically stabilized schizophrenics and 10 healthy controls during the performance of a 'modified Stroop'. In the 'modified Stroop', the subjects were required to respond with a two-button mouse to whether or not the color of a subsequent word corresponded to one of T-shirt. The significantly activated brain regions were investigated in a voxel-wise Mest of the Stroop load. Results : Schizophrenics, compared with healthy controls, showed poorer response time, but had similar accuracy. Compen-satory activation in the right inferior frontal gyms (IFG) was observed in schizophrenics. The left paracingulate sulcus was less activated in the schizophrenics than in the healthy controls. Conclusion : These results suggest that, in schizophrenics showing a normal accuracy during the Stroop, selective attention deficits might be related to the left paracingulate sulcus as well as the anterior cingulate. In addition, their deficits may be compensated with the right IFG.

Purpose: Small calibered prosthetic vascular grafts are prone to low patency rates after bypass surgery due to its high thrombogenicity and neointimal hyperplasia. Endothelial cells are known to inhibit thrombus formations, platelet aggregation and smooth muscle cells proliteration. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of autologous endothelial cell seeded prosthetic vascular graft. Method: The autologous endothelial cells (ECs) were harvested from canine external jugular veins. Approximately 5*10^4 ECs were obtained through passage 5 to 6 under the static condition. The cultured ECs were seeded into the polytetrafluoroethylenc (PTFE) graft and cultured for 3 days before implanting into the canine carotid artery.The PTFE graft was harvested at 6 weeks after implantation. Result: The primary cultured ECs were treated with Factor VⅢ/WF, CD3]/PECAM-1 antibodyand confirmed with fluorescence micrograph, The gratf patency rates were 2/6 (33%) in the control gratf and 5/6 (83%) in the ECs seeded graft at 6 weeks after implantation. the entire luminal surface of the EC seeded graft was covered with ECs. Only the vicinity of the anastomosis site was covered with ECs in the control graft. Conclusion: This is a pilot study for the development of autologous endothelial cell seeded prosthetic vascular graft. The results of our study demonstrate that the endothelialized PTFE are better than ninendothelialized PTFE.

The authors have made and attempt to examine the transition of the leading causes of death in Korea recently since 1984 by analytically reviewing the annual statistical data on the causes of death for the latest ten years reported mainly from the National Statistical Office and other informative materials. The results were summarized as follows: 1. After the inverting period of the 1970s and early 1980s changing remarkably from the communicable to the non-communicable disease, the leading causes of death were changed to the chronic degenerative diseases such as circulatory disease and malignant neoplasms recently. 2. With the particularly increasing deaths due to the unintentional accidents since the mid-1980s, circulatory disease, malignant neoplasms, and accidents became the three leading causes of death, and accounted for about 66.5 percent of the total deaths in 1993. 3. Concerning the sex-specific leading causes of death, currently they were malignant neoplasms, accidents, cerebrovascular disease, chronic liver disease, and heart disease in males, and cerebrovascuar disease, malignant neoplasms, heart disease, accidents, and hypertensive disease, malignant neoplasms, heart disease, accidents, and hypertensive disease in females in that order respectively. 4. As to the leading causes of death by the age-groups, they were congenital anomaly and infectious disease at infantile age; accidents and unintentional injury at ages 1-39year: malignant neoplasms, circulatory disease, and chronic degenerative disease at ages 40-69years; and circulatory disease, senility and other chronic degenerative disease at ages 70 and over respectively. 5. In reviewing the transition of the leading causes of death, communicable diseases formidably prevailed for the past decades were rapidly decreased recently, and chronic degenerative disease, So-called, "Chronic Illness" such as circulatory disease, malignant neoplasms, and chronic pulmonary disease are in tendency of continuous increase year by year. Although chronic liter disease seems to be stationary in incidence now-a-days, additionally, its level of death is still relatively high. And the death rates due to all kinds of accidents are remarkably increasing. Overall, accidents and unintentional injuries were the third leading cause of death and accounted for about 15 percent of the total deaths.

Central diabetes insipidus (DI) is a syndrome characterized by thirst, polydipsia and polyuria. Langerhans cell histiocytosis is one of the etiologies of DI. Recently we experienced a central DI associated with Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The 44 years old female patient complained right hip pain polydipsia and polyuria. We carried out water deprivation test. After vasopressin injection, urine osmotic pressure was increased form 109mOsmol/Kg to 327mOsmol/Kg (300%). Brain MRI showed a thickened pituitary stalk and at hot bone CT.CT guided biopsy revealed abnormal histiocytes proliferation and abundant lymphocytes, The final diagnosis was central DI associated with systemic Langerhans cell histiocytosis invading hip bone, L-spine and pituitary stalk. Desmopressin and etoposide chemotherapy were performed to the patient.

자원봉사자들의 탈북자 지원 경험 분석 : 설문결과를 중심으로

Objectives: Since 1994, the number of North Korean defectors, escaping North Korea and entering South Korea, has in creased rapidly.The Government has provided most of te support for the defectors' adaptation to their new society.But as the number of defectors has increased, and the support needs have become more various, the support of volunteers from non-governmental organization(NGO) has become very important.To raise the level of the success and effectiveness of the support from the volunteers, their experiences were surveyed and analyzed. Methods: This study surveyed 83 volunteers of 7 NGOs involved in helping North Korean defectors' adaptation to South Korean society-48 men and 34 women. Results: In their relationships with defectors, women volunteers have more difficulties in their first 3 months.However volunteers in their 50s and 60s tend to have more stable and better relationships with defectors than younger volunteers.Many volunteers statedexperiences of human difficulties with defectors, for example, mistrust and anxiety in human relationship (n=34, 41.0%), psychological maladjustment(n=19, 22.9%), different ways of thinking and culture(n=17, 20.5%), economic difficulties(n=10, 12.0%), and lack of independence spirit(n=6, 7.2%).The volunteers said they have feelings of goddwill toward defectors when defectors showed warm heart(n=30, 36.1%), politeness(n=30, 36.1%), positive and active character (n=24, 28.9%), strong will(n=17, 20.5%), and plainness (n=14, 16.0%).The volunteers stated an absence of goodwill feelings to defectors when defectors showed uncompromising and aggressive attitudes (n=29, 34.9%), lack of independent will (n=28, 33.7%), selfishness (n=18, 21.7%), and avoidance of making human relationship (n=16, 19.3%).as for adequate training before commencing activity, 5 volunteers(6.0%) said they had received enough education before their activity, 31(37.3%) relatively enough, 38 (45.8%) relatively not enough, and 9 (10.8%) absolutely not enough education.If they were the owners of al company, 27 volunteers (51.9%) sanid they would want to thire defectors even if the defectors did not have the required ability. Conclusion: These results showed that NGO's volunteers have a friendlier attitude to defectors than policemen n charge and public officials, which is their strong point.Women volunteers experience more difficulties in their early relationships with defectors, suggesting the need for a specific pre-education program for women volunteers.Furthermore, NGOs would benefit from an increase in the number of volunteers in their 50's and 60's.Both volunteers and defectors need to understand each othe to a deeprer extent and the characteristics to which South Korean volunteers feel goodwill need to be used n their education.

The basic ideas of design were harmony in the form and contrast in the quality of material. Therefore the clock tower was designed a sphere form by stainless steel with a glossy surface and to has a clock per four orientation.

성북구 거주 거동 불편 여성노인의 생활만족도에 관한 연구

The purpose of the study was to investigate relationships among life satisfaction of the elderly women in poor-health conditions, with their self-esteem, health and financial status, family relations, and social participation. A structured questionnaire was used to interview a sample of 168 elderly women who were randomly selected from Sungbuk-ku, Seoul. The statistical methods used were percentiles, means, standard deviations, Cronbach`s α, Pearson`s correlations and a multiple regression. The regression analysis showed that the most powerful predictor of satisfaction of the poor-health elderly women was their self esteem, followed by relationships with their adult children, perceived financial status, age, and the amount of allowances. These variables accounted for 41.7% of life satisfaction of the sample. Implications for the policy-makers and practitioners were further discussed.

The concept of revenue management have been used mainly in the service-industries like hotel and air transportation which handles perishable asset. Recently however, it is being increasingly applied to many other areas including travel, railway and medicine. This paper tries to introduce the concept into the internet business. Revenue management used in the service industry is a good system for the management of perishable asset. Internet business can be classified acr various industries according to the characteristics of the individual companies. Contents providers and internet service providers are very similar to service industry, and revenue management system is suitable to them. This paper develops the ways to apply the revenue management concept to ISP business.

The College of Engineering was specialized to have a sole function for supplying technical high school teachers in 1977 and referred to as the College of Industrial Education according to the Government's policy. The economic impact mainly due to the oil-crises caused a severe problem to this college, namely discrepancy of supply to demand scale. Accordingly the number of student enrollment was to be fluctuated from 479 in 1979 through 800 in 1979 and 900 in 1980 to 430 in 1981. And the engineering departments have been attached to this Engineering Education College since 1981. These circumstanses met singnificant inefficiency in facility operation. This program aims at providing an overall relocation of the college facilities and preparing the practical system to make the joint-operation possible taking into account circulation, academic stream, budget, maintenance, etc. However this study could not get optimal spacing but some trade-off, considering the current situation.
